Editor: Marc Bridle Founder Len Mullenger: Len@musicweb.uk.net Kaija Saariaho, L’Amour de loin The first opera of the famed contemporary composer, Kaija Saariaho Kent Nagano and the Orchestre de Paris in the pit, it was the first French performance of L’Amour de loin (The Love from Afar). Critically acclaimed at its first performance at the Salzburg Festival in August 2000, it is also scheduled for the Santa Fe Opera Festival. Saariaho (b. 1952), a Finnish composer currently living in Paris, is yet another of a remarkable group of composers from this small country to achieve considerable notice internationally. Her opera is a passionate and delicate paean to love with exotic harmonies and magical instrumental colours. It reminded me more of the Impressionist composers rather than compositions of her mentor, Pierre Boulez. Telling a story of a troubadour in love with a distant Countess of Tripoli, it is filled with intimations of Arabic musical forms. Written by the composer specifically for the remarkable soprano Dawn Upshaw Gerald Finley Lilli Paasikivi as a pilgrim who acts as the go-between to unite the lovers. The chamber choir Accentus joined the Orchestre de Paris, discerningly conducted by Nagano. Singing from the highest balconies, they added an often unearthly and affecting accompaniment to the stage action.

Robert Spano, conductor. 31 st July 2002 (HS) Monica Groop, The Pilgrim Saariaho writes in a mostly tonal language, complex and often dissonant, but never hard edged. She weaves electronic sounds through the orchestral texture, sometimes eerily anticipating an orchestral sound with the electronics, which emanate from back and side of the open-sided theater. She also uses two choruses, placed on opposite sides of the orchestra seats, sometimes to represent an unseen crowd but more often to add extra texture to the overall sound. She writes long, grateful lines for the singers. Her music is at its best in the first scenes, when she paints the picture of the troubador and his idealistic love, and the final scene, when the troubador and the princess finally meet. You can sense the sexual tension throbbing below the surface. In the middle scenes I found too much of a sameness, but that did set off the extended final scene in even greater relief. When the troubador regains consciousness only to find himself with the princess as he is about to breathe his last, the music takes on an other-worldy feel. Upshaw's final scene, as she veers from anger at God to a sort of contrition, is just a few shudders shy of a mad scene. With it, ‘L'amour de loin’ finally becomes a real opera.

She studied composition under Paavo Heininen at the Sibelius Academy and later at the Musikhochschule in Freiburg with Brian Ferneyhough and Klaus Huber, receiving her diploma there in 1983. In 1982 she attended courses in computer music at IRCAM in Paris, since when the computer has been an important element of her composing technique. In 1986 she was awarded the Kranichsteiner Preis at the new music summer courses in Darmstadt, and in 1988 the Prix Italia, for her work Stilleben. In 1989 Stilleben and Io were awarded the Ars Electronica Prize. More recently, in 2000 she received both the Nordic Music Prize (for Lonh) and the Stoeger Award of the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center (in recognition of outstanding services to chamber music). In 2001 Kaija Saariaho was awarded with the Rolf Schock Prize (Sweden) and the Kaske Prize (Germany). She achieved international recognition with works that include Verblendungen (orchestra and tape, 1982-84), Lichtbogen for chamber ensemble and electronics (1985-96), Nymphéa (1987) for string quartet and electronics, a commission from the Lincoln Center for the Kronos Quartet, and two linked orchestral works Du Cristal and ...à la fumée premiered in 1990 and 1991 both in Helsinki and Los Angeles. Saariaho has also taken part in a number of multimedia productions such as the full-length ballet Maa (1991) and a pan-European collaborative project to produce a CD-ROM Prisma about her life and work.

Reviews Classics Today, 08/02/2003 Welser-Most put his best foot forward with a splendid new work by the Finnish composer Kaija Saariaho, ''Orion.'' This is a three-movement piece about the constellation and the myth behind it. The music is assimilative rather than original; Saariaho knows how to conceal the mechanisms of composition through evocative precision of scoring. Sibelius looms over Finnish composers today the way Beethoven loomed over his successors in Vienna; Saariaho creates a different sound world but the emotional landscapes are similar: the bardic storytelling in an atmosphere of northernness, cold, isolation, and distance. The second movement, ''Winter Sky,'' is full of eerie, icy sounds. The third puts Orion into the sky by an ingenious but effective means - the music speeds up while simultaneously growing softer and more distant as groups of instruments drop out until there is only a chiming silence. Lonh - Kaija Saariaho (1952- ) Lonh . Tout se trame autour et par la voix, dans toutes ses composantes, pour faire chanter le monde des bruits. L'oeuvre est composée pour soprano et bande. Les parties enregistrées sont réparties sur neuf séquences sonores quadriphoniques. Chaque séquence est déclenchée en temps réel de façon à permettre une souplesse d'interprétation. La réalisation de la partie enregistrée de Lonh a fait appel à des enregistrements de voix parlée et chuchotée, une voix d'enfant, des cloches et des chants d'oiseaux des bois. Toutes ces sources ont fait l'objet d'un travail en studio qui les a délicatement tissées entre elles, de sorte que les timbres s'étendent de sonorités pures à des bruits de souffle et de chuchotement. Ecoutons d'abord la séquence électronique du début de la dernière section "Tornado". On y entend les oiseaux et des voix qui forment une texture mobile de timbres. Ecoutons maintenant un extrait de l'oeuvre qui commence trente secondes plus tôt (fin de la section 7) ; après un mouvement descendant des percussions métalliques, on entend la séquence électronique de l'exemple précédent et la voix de la soprano Dawn Upshaw.

By John von Rhein Chicago Tribune music critic July 8, 2002 By far the finest music-making I heard over the weekend came on behalf of the impressive Finnish composer Kaija Saariaho, whose "Aile du songe" ("Wing of the Dream") received its U.S. premiere here on Saturday one of the few pieces of new music Ravinia is presenting this season. Camilla Hoitenga, to whom the score is dedicated, was the brilliant flute soloist. Taking her cue from poems by Saint-John Perse, Saariaho has produced a sound-world that shimmers with beauty and wonder. The two sections are filled with images of birds in flight at once living things that mediate between sky and land, and metaphors for the mysteries of life. Rising in intervals suggestive of Asian musical scales, the flute's avian whistles and flutterings draw delicate responses from instruments of the orchestra, primarily exotic percussion. Hoitenga produced an incredible array of played, sung and spoken sounds, while Eschenbach and the CSO made sympathetic partners. I haven't heard a better piece of new music all year. BACK
