In 1983 he shared the Wihuri International Sibelius prize with Penderecki. He is a member of the Royal Swedish Music Academy and Honorary Doctor of the Universities of Helsinki and Turku. The Finnish Government made him Professor of Arts for life in 1981 - the first appointment of its kind, thus making it possible for him to devote all of his time to composing.
His extensive catalogue of compositions includes eight acclaimed and distinctive symphonies. Symphony no.7: The Dreams of Gandalf (1996) was premiered by the Göteborg Symfoniker in November 1996. In addition, he has written some major concert works involving voices, notably the Dies Irae (1978), an apocalyptic vision of our planet destroyed, and Songs of Life and Death (1994), an expansive expression of Sallinen's humanitarian creed. Sallinen's catalogue also includes chamber, vocal and ensemble music, and his works have been commissioned and performed worldwide.
One of the foremost living opera composers, he has written six large-scale works in this genre including: The King Goes Forth To France (1983) commissioned jointly by the Savonlinna Festival, The Royal Opera House Covent Garden, and the BBC; The Palace (1991-3) with libretto by Hans Magnus Enzensberger and Irene Dische, commissioned by the Savonlinna Opera Festival and premiered there in 1995. In 1999, he composed his sixth opera, King Lear, with libretto adapted from Shakespeare's play. This had a triumphant premiere in September 2000 at the Finnish National Opera, conducted by Okko Kamu and directed by Kari Heiskanen. Only a year later, in October 2001, the ballet The Hobbit was premiered to great acclaim at the same venue in a unique collaboration of the Ballet School of the Finnish National Opera and the Sibelius Academy Symphony Orchestra

http://www.warnerclassics.com/finlandia/ln/mtc/sallinen.htm
Aulis Sallinen Aulis Sallinen (b. 1935) is one of the best-known Finnish composers internationally. Sallinen has acquired fame primarily as a composer of five operas (eg. The Red Line The Horseman , The King Goes Forth to France Sallinen the composer as the operas are. Like many other Finnish composers of his generation, Sallinen went through a short twelve-tone period in the late 1950s and early 1960s. After that, his idiom began to move towards the direct and familiar style for which he has been known since the late 1960s. Sallinen is a Neo-Romantic at heart; his music proceeds in easily breathing sweeps and seems to well up from somewhere in the deep dark undercurrents of life. However, Sallinen 's straightforward style is often mixed with newer elements, such as chords coalescing into clusters. Sallinen 's scale of style and expression is at its widest in his operas, but he has combined different elements in his instrumental works as well. 2 CD: Meet the Composer: Aulis Sallinen

Compositeur finlandais né le 9 avril 1935 à Salmi, lac Ladoga, Russie
    Biographie
