Discography Here... Programme Note The title Sunrise Serenade is equivocal. Sallinen had just completed his fourth opera, Kullervo, which explores the themes of decision-making, incest and suicide. There have been frequent occasions when Sallinen's trust in his creative gifts has been numbed, as he found himself contemplating the amount of cruelty that man can inflict and the depths of unhappiness that can be reached. But then he will glimpse a chink of light peeping through the darkness, and the beckoning to compose resurfaces. Notwithstanding its unquestionable melancholy, the haunting, echoing spirit permeating the Sunrise Serenade is healing in its effect. Trumpet two, offstage, states the main motive. Strings and solo piano then establish the work's subdued atmosphere. AULIS SALLINEN (left) is one of Finland's most famous contemporary composers, which the Finns have been blessed with in large numbers (Rautaavara, Aho, Lindberg, Kaipainen, Englund, Bergman, etc. just to name the living ones). In 1976 he was bestowed a professorship by the Finnish government and is internationally well-known for his operas. Sallinen's music is mostly tonal and melodious, as much of the music on this disc demonstrates.

Sallinen and Salminen K uningas King Lear is Aulis Sallinen's sixth opera. It had its world premiere at the Finnish National Opera in Helsinki in September 2000. Once again, the response of international critics was mixed: some praised, others found fault. Sallinen is a composer who leaves no one cold. He himself considers King Lear more melodious than his earlier operas. The eponymous role was written specifically for Matti Salminen, one of the greatest basses of our time. Aulis Sallinen, STRONG AND SIMPLE From Finnish Music Quarterly magazine by Martin Anderson "You are born with a dramatic pulse, with dramatic thinking, and that's that. I've written now about two-thirds, so I call it a marathon," says composer Aulis Sallinen, whose new opera King Lear will be premiered at the Finnish National Opera on 15 September, 2000. Exactly twenty years ago, when an international tour brought the Finnish National Opera to Sadler's Wells, in London, the bill of fare consisted of two works not long off their composers' workbenches, Joonas Kokkonen's Viimeiset Kiusaukset (The Last Temptations) and Aulis Sallinen's Punainen Viiva (The Red Line). Like most of the other people in the audience, I was hearing these works for the first time. And like all the rest of the audience, I was on my feet as soon as the curtain fell, bellowing my enthusiasm. The reputation of "contemporary" music outside its specialist circles is such that one can hardly imagine an ordinary audience responding with such immediate excitement to modern opera, but the sheer electricity those two works brought to that auditorium remains without parallel in my listening experience. Aulis Sallinen His satirical masterpiece to date, his fifth opera Palatsi (The Palace), first performed in 1995, is a riotously funny send-up of bureaucracy and political self-importance.
