Esa-Pekka Salonen (born Finland 1958) studied horn, conducting and composing at the conservatory in Helsinki during the 1970s. He initially considered himself to be a conducting composer, until in 1983 when, following a performance of Mahler's third symphony with the Philharmonia Orchestra in London undertaken at short notice, he overnight became a composing conductor. Now following an international conducting career he has still managed to preserve his creativity as a composer and each new work is eagerly awaited. His first large scale orchestral work Concerto for Saxophone and Orchestra ('...auf den ersten blick und ohne zu wissen...' ) The Trial which Salonen felt expressed something about the imaginary world that his piece inhabits. Salonen's second orchestral work Giro is also from this period and uses something of the same harmonic structure. 10 years were to pass before Salonen had the time to complete another such large-scale piece. In the first half of 1982 he worked in the studios of the Finnish Broadcasting Company on a radiophonic composition

Floof is an experimental piece dating from 1982 (but heavily revised and finalised in 1990) setting texts by the Polish science fiction writer Stanislaw Lem. It is an ebullient and histrionic tour de force for soprano and small ensemble, and won the UNESCO Rostrum prize in 1992 and has been widely performed and broadcast in Europe and the USA.
During 1996, Salonen found time from his busy conducting schedule to compose a major orchestral piece, L.A. Variations, which was commissioned by the Los Angeles Philharmonic and had a triumphant premiere in January 1997. L.A. Variations marked the start of a newly fertile composing life; in June 1997 he made extensive revisions to Giro and the new version was premiered at the Avanti! Summer Sounds Festival in Finland. Another orchestral work, Gambit, was composed as a 40th birthday present for his compatriot and great friend Magnus Lindberg, and was premiered in May 1998 in Amsterdam.

Esa-Pekka Salonen was born in Helsinki in 1958 and studied at the Sibelius Academy . He went on to study composition with Niccolo Castiglioni in Italy, and it was as a composer that Salonen started his musical career. It wasn't until 1983, following a performance of Mahler's Third Symphony with the Philharmonia Orchestra undertaken at short notice, that he decided to become a composing conductor. Since 1986, he has been Principal Conductor of the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra and Principal Guest Conductor of the Philharmonia Orchestra in London. As a result of a very successful series of concerts at the Hollywood Bowl, in 1989 Salonen was invited to become Music Director of the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra , the youngest in the orchestra's history, and assumed the appointment in 1992. Salonen's advocacy of twentieth-century music has played an important role in his development as a conductor. At the 1993 Salzburg Festival, he conducted highly acclaimed performances of Messiaen's Saint François d'Assise with the Los Angeles Philharmonic, and that same year became the first conductor to win the "Premio Internationale" prize of the Accademia Chigiana in Siena, Italy. Salonen has an exclusive recording contract with Sony Classical Carnegie Hall in 1988, leading the Swedish Radio Orchestra.

8. STUDIO Interviews Esa-Pekka Salonen
EsaPekka Salonen. a conversation with composer and Los Angeles PhilharmonicMusic Director. Esa-Pekka Salonen Well, that is a simplification, of course!
http://www.studiofornewmusic.com/saloneninterview.htm
Esa-Pekka Salonen ...a conversation with composer and Los Angeles Philharmonic Music Director JD Hixson: For this interview’s ‘gambit,’ I was wondering if you’d respond to the gross oversimplification that, in recent years, your music has perhaps shifted from the orbit of Pierre Boulez into that of John Adams… Esa-Pekka Salonen: Well, that is a simplification, of course! But yes, I grew up in a strict modernist milieu. And without much thinking, in a way, I accepted this as a norm. That was the climate and that was what was normal and natural. And it was only much later when I came to a point in my own life and work where I was ready to move towards the kind of music I was imagining all along but didn’t quite know how to reach it, didn’t quite know how to get there. Also earlier, I had an interesting discrepancy in my life because I was writing Serial, or Post-Serial music, if you wish, and conducting Mahler, Strauss, Stravinsky, Debussy, Sibelius, Bruckner… this sort of repertoire with the big sonority and a lot of color and a lot of visceral impact. At the same time, I was operating with a much drier means of expression in my own work, my own music.

Esa-pekka Salonen

Esa-Pekka Salonen
We are extremely fortunate in Los Angeles to have one of the premier young conductor/composers in the world, Esa-Pekka Salonen, to lead our Philharmonic Orchestra. He brings a fresh perspective to everything from Bach to Schoenberg. In 2000, he is taking a yearlong sabbatical to prepare his first opera, which will debut in the summer of 2001. I can't wait to hear it! Admittedly, I am thoroughly unqualified to critique conducting techniques, but I wholeheartedly give my official seal of approval to Maestro Salonen. He is quite restrained and content to guide pretty melodic contours, but if the music calls for more, he pours an incredible amount of energy into it. I always get the feeling that not only does he know precisely what story the music is telling and how to communicate it in vivid detail, with him the music *is* the fundamental truth of the story. This makes for very captivating, enthralling concerts. See my reviews of Salonen conducting various 2001 L.A. Philharmonic events here

Natural-born superstar
H e was a superstar at birth. A wunderkind for whom everything connected with music was easy. A young genius who - through a misunderstanding, he claims - gave his name as Mozart in the entrance examination for the Sibelius Academy's conducting class. S alonen - whose awards as a composer include the Prix Italia - is perhaps not Mozart, but he is unquestionably one of the most highly regarded and successful conductors of his generation. A mong Salonen's weapons are his unusually clear beat, his effective use of rehearsal time, his consistently clear and dynamic interpretations and - more often in the concert hall than in the recording studio - his capacity to throw himself emotionally on to the level of a wild man when dynamite is needed. S alonen's debut in London with the Philharmonia Orchestra in 1983, at the age of 25, was an international sensation. He received an appointment as a regular visiting conductor with the Philharmonia, a record contract with CBS (now Sony) and a rapid tour as a visiting conductor with leading orchestras. He made a particularly good impression in 1984 in Los Angeles, where previous artistic directors of the Philharmonic Orchestra have included Zubin Mehta and Carlo Maria Giulini. Salonen was appointed artistic director of the Los Angeles Philharmonic in 1989, taking up the appointment in 1992.
