Kesällä 1998 neljäkymmentä vuotta täyttäneet Esa-Pekka ja Magnus olivat nimittäin ensimmäisen Korvat-sukupolven kuopuksia. Muutaman vuoden ikäero muihin ei kylläkään tuntunut kuin lähinnä VPK:n ravintolassa, jossa äkäinen tarjoilijatäti otti tilausta joukon babyfacelta - E-P:ltä - aina tyyliin "Mitäs pojulle saisi olla? Onkos tuota ikää?". Yhdeksäntoista vuoden kunnioitettava ikä tosin takasi EP:llekin jo Korvat auki ry:n perustamisesta lähtien, ettei häntä sentään heitetty ulos yhdistyksen tärkeimmästä kokouspaikasta. Kuopukset Sibelius-Akatemian pääoven edessä loppuvuodesta 1978 tai alkuvuodesta 1979 eli lähes puolta nuorempina kuin nykyään. "Oli vaatteet heillä herran ja suussaan sikaarit." Magnus, E-P, pasunisti Petri Juutilainen ja Otto Romanowski Laulu-Miesten ravintolassa todennäköisesti Sibelius-Akatemian oppilaskunnan vuosijuhlassa 1977. Debuterade som dirigent med Finska Radions Symfoniorkester 1979. 1985 utsågs han 27 år gammal till chefdirigent för Sveriges Radios Symfoniorkester och kvarstod i den positionen i tio år. Parallellt var Esa-Pekka Salonen till 1994 förste gästdirigent vid Philharmonia Orchestra i London, med vilken han även senare genomfört en rad uppmärksammade framföranden av György Ligetis musik i städer som London, Paris, Tokyo och Salzburg. Senare har han med orkestern gjort en konsertserie med Magnus Lindbergs musik i London, Paris och Bryssel. Esa-Pekka Salonens huvudengagemang är sedan 1992 ställningen som Music Director vid Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra. Med denna orkester har han bland annat gjort ett flertal gästspel vid ledande europeiska festivaler och turnerat i Japan. Orkestern har uruppfört en rad verk av tonsättare som John Adams och Rodion Sjtjedrin och genomfört uppmärksammade festivaler med musik av bland andra Igor Stravinskij.

Debut as conductor with the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra in 1979. Appointed head conductor of the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra at the age of 27 in 1985, a position held for a decade. Until 1994, Salonen was also first guest conductor at the London Philharmonic, with whom he later staged a series of acclaimed performances of György Ligeti’s music in places like London, Paris, Tokyo and Salzburg. Later still, he and the orchestra performed music by Magnus Lindberg in London, Paris and Brussels. Since 1992, Esa-Pekka Salonen’s main commitment has been to the job of Music Director at the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra. His achievements with the LA orchestra include a large number of guest appearances at leading European festivals and touring Japan. The orchestra has premiered a series of works by composers like John Adams and Rodion Sjtjedrin and put on acclaimed performances of music by the likes of Igor Stravinskij. Salonen also makes regular guest appearances with orchestras such as the Bavarian Radio Symphony, the Berlin Philharmonic, the Chicago Symphony and the Cleveland Orchestra. Esa-Pekka Salonen Esa-Pekka Salonen, Director Titular de Los Angeles Philharmonic, es el décimo director que ha estado al frente de dicha Orquesta. Sucesor de figuras tan prominentes como Otto Klemperer, Eduard van Beinum, Zubin Mehta, Carlo Maria Giulini y André Previn, el señor Salonen comenzó su tercera temporada como Director Musical en Octubre de 1994. Antes de asumir el puesto de Director Musical, dirigió la Philharmonic en el Music Center, en el Hollywood Bowl y, en Agosto de 1992, en el Festival de Salzburgo, donde fue, junto con la Orquesta, objeto de aclamación generalizada de la prensa internacional a lo largo de su permanencia de un mes de esa ciudad. Esa-Pekka Salonen dirigió la Orquesta en el Festival de Pascua de Lucerna, que constituyó su primera actuación en Europa como Director Titular de la Filarmónica de Los Angeles. Desde entonces ha actuado con las más importantes orquestas en toda Europa y América, habiendo sido Director Invitado Principal de la Philharmonia de Londres desde 1985 hasta 1994.
