In his own highly amusing and witty writings, Satie said his childhood was 'utterly uneventful'. His love life was equally uneventful, apart from a passionate and brief affair in 1893 with a trapeze artist - a suitable affair for someone who proved a darling of the surrealist movement. He lived by himself in a flat with some odd habits - he had dozens of umbrellas, 12 identical velvet suits, and 84 identical handkerchiefs. Satie's music consists mostly of short whimsical piano pieces with bizarre titles: 'Flabby Preludes for a Dog', 'Desiccated Embryos', 'Chilled Pieces' and so on. Apparently simple, they are nevertheless full of odd harmonic turns - and surprisingly hard to memorise, say pianists. He also wrote chamber works, including the famous 'furniture music' to be played at an exhibition which was conceived be there in the background, not a work of art to be listened to. The composer Milhaud predicted that all the musical innovations of the 50 years following Satie's death would be found in his music, and it seems he was right: Satie had created the idea of 'background music'. Among his ballet music is the often-heard 'Parade' of 1917, which includes police sirens and a typewriter. The austere but moving 'Death of Socrates', written for high voice and chamber ensemble shortly before he died in Paris, is probably Satie's finest work.

U hoort nu van Erik Satie: 3 Gnossiennes Erik Satie werd geboren in Honfleur (Calvados, Frankrijk) op 17 mei 1866. Zijn vader, Jules Alfred Satie, werkte aanvankelijk als scheepsmakelaar. Daar hij vloeiend Duits, Portugees, Spaans, Italiaans, Nederlands, Deens, Latijn en Grieks sprak, vond hij later in Parijs werk als vertaler. In zijn vrije tijd gaf Satie Senior piano- en zanglessen. Ook verzorgde hij de uitgave van composities uit van zijn vrouw, van zijn zoon Erik en van zijn vriend Eric-Charles Levadé. Erik's moeder, de eerste echtgenote van Jules Alfred, was gedoopt in de Church of Scotland in Londen onder de naam Jane Leslie Anton. Zij stond erop dat haar vier kinderen anglicaans gedoopt werden. Omdat daardoor de verhouding van haar schoonmoeder er niet beter op werd, verhuisden de Saties naar Parijs. Toen Erik nog maar zes jaar was, stierven in enkele weken tijd zijn moeder en zijn zus. Erik en Conrad werden bij de ouders van Alfred ondergebracht, en werden op 4 december 1872 katholiek gedoopt. Erik ging op kostschool in het College van Honfleur. Bij de dood van zijn grootmoeder ging hij naar Parijs bij zijn vader wonen, die op 21 januari 1879 trouwde met de muzieklerares Eugénie Barnetche. Vanaf 1876 kreeg Erik muzieklessen van de organist van de Saint-Léonardkerk in Honfleur, een zekere Monsieur Vinot, die was afgestudeerd aan de Ecole Niedermeyer, een hogeschool voor kerkmuziek, waar het in ere herstellen van de gregoriaanse zang hoog in het vaandel stond.

Scope and Content This collection of Erik Satie papers is composed of two different collections. In 1938 a small acquisition was made by Mildred Bliss, Dumbarton Oaks, from Sybil Harris, who had been a friend and patron of young Parisian artists in the 1920s. The manuscripts [nos. (12),(70),(95),(100),(102),(105)], and a printed piano score of Piege de Meduse [*FC9.Sa832.921p] were deposited at the Library of Congress, and some still carry the library's bookplate. The main part of the present collection was owned by Darius Milhaud, who found these manuscripts in Satie's apartment after the composer's death in 1925 and took them to the US in 1940. He mounted an exhibition of the entire collection at Mills College, Oakland, California. The typescript catalogue was numbered in Arabic, 1-105. In about 1960 almost the entire collection was acquired by Mildred Bliss. At Dumbarton Oaks, a new list was compiled in 1963 of the Harris and Milhaud materials using Roman numbering I-LXXVII.
