Salieri, Antonio
XXVI Variazoni sull'aria La Follia di Spagna
Opening of Variazoni sull'aria La Follia di Spagna

  • Steven J. Haller wrote for the 'American record guide' in the issue May 2001 (and he obviously fails to hear any beauty in the Folia theme): Main course here, as in so many recent Salieri repasts, is the La Folia Variations. The interminable and not very imaginative shifts from winds to strings (or fast to slow) and back again that here suffice for "variations" make this one of Salieri's less impressive efforts, particularly set next to the overtures. Pesko takes about 20 minutes for the variations, while Frontalini takes 21 and Spada on ASV takes 23 (Sept/Oct 1996). Bamert without ever sounding rushed or superficial gets through it in 17:47, and (even better) actually manages to hold your interest while doing so. The others have their virtues too, but I think you'll be quite happy with Bamert, assuming you ever want to listen to the piece to begin with.
    • Title: Twenty-six Variations on 'La folia di Spagna'
    • Released 2001 by Chandos compact disc CH CHAN 9877
    • Recording date: 2001
    • Released 1978 LP Italia ITL 70052

Pietro Spada (Engish version by Carole McGrath Manzoni) wrote as an introduction: The 'Variations on the Follia of Spain' are in all probability Salieri's last symphonic work and can be chronologically placed in the middle of the Beethoven period (1815). They are almost surely the only nineteenth-century orchestral variations until Brahms's celebrated 'Variations on a theme by Haydn'. The folk song, incorrectly called 'Follies d'Espagne', which provides the theme is of seventeenth century Portuguese origin, and has been used and made famous by many composers including Corelli, d'Anglebert, Scarlatti, Pasquini, Bach (in his Cantatas)
  • 64. Scarlatti, Alessandro
scarlatti, alessandro. (16591725), Italian composer, who helped to establishthe Neapolitan style of opera that dominated 18th-century music.
    http://www.cartage.org.lb/en/themes/Biographies/MainBiographies/S/Scarlatti/e1.h
Scarlatti, Alessandro Italian composer, who helped to establish the Neapolitan style of opera that dominated 18th-century music. Born in Palermo, Sicily, he was probably trained in Rome under the Italian oratorio composer Giacomo Carissimi. His earliest known opera, L'errore innocente, was produced in Rome in 1679. In 1684 a more important work, Pompeo, was performed in Naples, and Scarlatti was appointed musical director at the Neapolitan court. In 1702-3 he lived in Florence under the patronage of Ferdinand de Medici (1663-1713). Scarlatti was assistant choirmaster at the Church of Santa Maria Maggiore in Rome from 1703 to 1713. He reestablished himself in Naples in 1713, becoming musical director of the Austrian viceroy, and director of the Conservatorio di Sant' Onofrio. From 1719 to 1723 he worked in Rome. He then returned to Naples and lived there until his death.
Scarlatti was one of the first opera composers to strongly differentiate the singing styles of aria and recitative. His opera overtures established the Neapolitan overture type, which has three movements, in fast, slow, and fast tempos. His cantatas, numbering more than 600, introduced many advanced harmonic procedures to the musical vocabulary of the time.

Very little is known of his early life. He married in 1678 and had ten children, of whom Domenico, also a composer of importance, was the sixth. Queen Christina of Sweden was his first patron. In 1684 he was appointed maestro di cappella of the royal chapel in Naples and, with leave of absence, he went in 1702 to Florence with Domenico, to enjoy the patronage of the Medicis; then, after a few years in Rome as maestro at Santa Maria Maggiore, he returned in 1709 to his old position in Naples. 74. Scarlatti & Hasse: Salve Regina, Cantatas & Motets
These cantatas are joined by settings of the Salve Regina by Domenico scarlatti(alessandro's sixth son) and Johann Adolf Hasse (a pupil).
    http://www.hyperion-records.co.uk/details/66875.asp
Compact Disc CDA66875 In the eighteenth century the cantata was considered to be the supreme challenge for a composer's artistry. Here are recorded three fine examples from the enormous corpus of such works by Alessandro Scarlatti, two for solo voice with continuo, and one which includes a particularly demanding part for obbligato trumpet, faultlessly played by Crispian Steele-Perkins. These cantatas are joined by settings of the Salve Regina by Domenico Scarlatti (Alessandro's sixth son) and Johann Adolf Hasse (a pupil). The work by Hasse is distinctly operatic with florid vocal and instrumental lines, and the younger Scarlatti similarly finds himself drawn away from religious deference to a more flamboyant style. 77. Alessandro Scarlatti: Life And Work, In Rome And Naples
alessandro scarlatti his life and work, in Rome, later operas and orchestral worksin Naples. BAROQUE COMPOSERS AND MUSICIANS. alessandro scarlatti.
    http://www.baroquemusic.org/bqxascarl.html
BAROQUE COMPOSERS AND MUSICIANS Alessandro Scarlatti Sicilian-born in 1660, Alessandro Scarlatti was trained in Rome. He married in 1678 and later that year was appointed Maestro di Cappella of San Giacomo degli Incurabili. His first large-scale oratorio-operatic works were performed there the following year when he was only 19. His patrons from the outset were of the highest rank, among them the exiled Queen Christina of Sweden who made him her Maestro di Cappella , Cardinal Pamphili, and the musically indefatigable Cardinal Ottoboni and, in Florence, Prince Ferdinando de Medici. In 1684 at the age of 24 Scarlatti moved to Naples, where he was appointed Maestro di Cappella at the vice-regal court of Naples, at the same time as his brother Francesco was made First Violinist. It was alleged that they owed their appointments to the intrigues of one of their sisters with two court officials, who were dismissed. For the next two decades over half the new operas given at Naples were by Scarlatti, producing over 40 works, which were first performed at the Viceregal Palazzo Reale and then at the public theatre of S. Bartolomeo, where Scarlatti was employed as the director along with nine singers, five instrumentalists and a copyist. In contrast to contemporary five-act Venetian operas, which continued to rely upon mythological characters and stage machinery, Scarlatti's shorter three-act 'Drammi per Musica' centered on the characterization of kings and confidants, lovers and servants.
