Philharmonic presents 'Peter Schickele Meets P.D.Q. Bach'
In what could be called a culture clash, classical music is served with a dollop of outrageous comedy as the Las Vegas Philharmonic presents "Peter Schickele Meets P.D.Q. Bach." With musical satirist Schickele at the helm, the audience will be treated to the compositions of "minimeister" P.D.Q. Bachwhose plagiarism is limited only by his faulty technique. Among the Bach masterworks likely to be played are "Hansel, Gretel, Ted and Alice," "Hindenburg Concertos," "The Royal Firewater Musick" and the grand opera, "Oedipus Tex." The Las Vegas Philharmonic will accompany Schickele and his entourage. Schickele is an internationally recognized composer and musician who has written works for more than 100 symphony orchestras. Besides recording albums, writing and arranging for movies and television, his weekly syndicated radio program "Schickele Mix" is heard nationwide over Public Radio International. Although his most recent credit is the animated feature Fantasia 2000, he really reaches the masses with his Professor Schickele persona, keeping his audience chuckling with P.D.Q. Bach's outrageous compositions. "Peter Schickele Meets P.D.Q. Bach" is April 19 at 8 p.m. in UNLV's Artemus W. Ham Concert Hall. This is a fundraiser for the youth and family programs of the Las Vegas Philharmonic. Tickets are $35-$75. The top ticket includes a premium seat and a post-concert reception with Schickele.Barbara Scherzer

Peter Schickele, Composer-In-Residence Selecting Peter Schickele as Composer-In-Residence was a natural choice for Mester, whose personal and professional relationship with the noted composer, musician, author and satirist began at Juilliard when they were both students. Of his esteemed colleague Mester says, “Peter is the quintessential American composer, and that is reflected in his music. I am deeply grateful to him for his immense contribution to our 75th Anniversary Season.” Schickele adds, “Jorge and I have been both musical colleagues and personal friends for over 40 years, and he has performed and recorded many of my more serious works as well as the P.D.Q. Bach ‘discoveries.’ He’s an inspired musician, as are the members of The Pasadena Symphony, so I know that my music is in good hands.” Schickele is internationally recognized as one of the most versatile artists in the field of music. His works, now well in excess of 100 for symphony orchestras, choral groups, chamber ensembles, movies and television, draw upon a broad range of musical inspirations and have placed him as a leader among American composers. His commissions are numerous and varied, ranging from works for the National Symphony, the St. Louis Symphony, the Minnesota Opera, the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, the Audubon and Lark String Quartets, the Minnesota Orchestral Association, and many other such organizations to compositions for distinguished instrumentalists and singers. The Pasadena Symphony premiered his cello concerto, In Memoriam FDR, last season.

    Peter Schickele's First Name!
Based on his own admission that Peter was not his first name , I posed the question does anyone know his first name? on the Schickele Mix home page . Shortly thereafter, I received this response: Subject: Peter Schickele
    To: mwm@cs.cmu.edu
    Date: Wed, 22 Nov 95 17:33:26 EST
From: keesan@world.std.com (Morris M. Keesan) Peter Schickele's first name is Johann . He never uses it. Even when he was a young child, his parents never had any intention of calling him anything but Peter. Some years ago, when moving and getting a new driver's license, he dropped the first name from the license. Part of the problem with the name Johann is that even if he decided to start using it, at this point nobody would believe that it was his real name. All of this information comes straight from the composer's mouth. He was in Boston this past weekend for the world premiere of a piece commissioned from him by the concert band I play in ("Metropolitan Wind Serenade", commissioned by the Metropolitan Wind Symphony for its 25th anniversary), and my wife and I were in charge of hospitality making sure he got to his hotel OK, taking him out to dinner, and driving him to the local public radio station for an on-air interview. I asked him about his name while we were in the car on the way to or from the radio studio. One thing he was wondering about is how you would have learned that Peter was his middle name, but not have learned what his first name was.

New York, NY XXXXX Dear Colleague: Greetings! I am writing to inform you of a most remarkable discovery: the visual appearance of Herr P.D.Q. Bach's headstone within the mausoleum on the outskirts of Baden-Baden-Baden. Although said mausoleum was destroyed in the 1840s ( pp. 112-113), computer analysis of the data collected by your esteemed research team ( pp. 131-135) has made possible visualization of this artifact whose historical significance cannot be underestimated. As you are no doubt aware, my own area of expertise lies in techniques for reconstruction of three-dimensional shapes from oblique imagery pp. 100-101) resulted in images of a variety of organic experience unsuitable for publication in any reputable medium of scientific discourse. I remained firmly committed to the project, however (anybody who says I'm not is a liar), and following a, hunch, applied the principles of super-resolution to your original images graciously made available to me by a random house-keeper for a remarkably small fee.

A lot of this has to do with electronic amplification. Prior to the dominance of amplified, recorded music, found instruments tended to be household items and tools that lent themselves to high-volume playing. Instruments such as the saw, washboard, hammer and anvil, spoons, water glasses, washtub bass, comb and tissue paper, jug and the like had to hold their own alongside more conventional instruments designed for reverberation.
