Franz Schmidt
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. Franz Schmidt December 22 February 11 ) was an Austrian composer Schmidt was born in Pressburg (Pozsony in Hungarian, present-day Bratislava) on December 22, 1874. He briefly studied piano with Theodor Leschetizky , with whom he clashed. He moved to Vienna with his family in 1888, and studied at the Conservatory there (composition with Robert Fuchs and cello with Ferdinand Hellmesberger ), graduating "with excellence" in 1896. He beat 13 other applicants in obtaining a post as cellist with the Vienna Court Opera Orchestra, with whom he played (often under the direction of Mahler ) until 1914. In that year he took up a professorship (in piano) at the State Academy of Music. In 1925 he became Director of the Academy, and in 1927 Rector. Schmidt's worsening health forced his retirement from the Academy in early 1937. He died on 11 February 1939.

Schmidt, Franz (1874 - 1939)
A piano pupil of Leschetizky and composition pupil of Bruckner, Franz Schmidt earned his living at first as a cellist in the Vienna Court Opera, where he experienced conflict with Mahler. He later taught composition at the Vienna Staatsakademie and was director of the Musikhochschule from 1927 to 1931. His work as a composer has something in common with Max Reger, particularly in music for the organ. Stage Music Schmidt's opera Notre Dame, based on Victor Hugo, had some success and excerpts, notably an Intermezzo, are heard in concert programmes. Vocal and Choral Music Das Buch mit sieben Siegeln (The Book with Seven Seals), based on the Apocalypse, has its own place among modern oratorios. Orchestral and Chamber Music Schmidt wrote four symphonies, Variations on a Theme of Beethoven for piano left hand and orchestra and a piano concerto for the left hand, these last, with various chamber works, for the pianist Paul Wittgenstein, brother of the philosopher Ludwig Wittgenstein, who had lost his right arm in the 1914-1918 war. Organ Music Schmidt added considerably to the repertoire of organ music, with a series of chorale-preludes, preludes and fugues, toccatas and sets of variations.
