Schoenberg's music challenged the pervading status quo at every turn and ushered in a new era of musical thought. Early Years Born in Vienna, Arnold Schoenberg began his musical journey with violin lessons at the age of eight. He immediately showed a penchant for composition, writing various small works without the aid of formal instruction. By his late teenage years, however, Schoenberg's artistic aspirations were forced temporarily to the side as he worked as a banker while studying his personal interests in music, philosophy and literature at night.

Arnold Schoenberg, (1874 - 1951), Vienna Arnold Schoenberg was born in Vienna in 1874, and died in 1951. Through extensive studying of scores, playing in amateur chamber groups, and attending concerts, he acquired an understanding of music. At the age of twenty-one, he lost his job as a bank clerk and devoted the remainder of his life to music. He began conducting a choir of industrial workers and orchestrating popular operettas, making little income. In 1904, he began teaching theory and composition in Vienna, inspiring his students, including famous composers Alban Berg and Anton Webern. Around 1908, Schoenberg got away from the traditional tonal system, and for the next eight years developed the twelve-tone system. Meanwhile, he began to write atonal music. This style however only appealed to those with greater knowledge of music, and he received an appointment at the Prussian Academy of Arts in Berlin. After the Nazis gained power in Germany, Schoenberg, who was Jewish moved to the United States, where he worked at the University of California in Los Angeles. His music was not well received, and he was experiencing financial difficulty. After his death in 1951, the twelve-tone system was used by many composers throughout the world. His early works were conventional and richly Romantic but after stretching traditional harmonies and key structures to the limit, he decided to abandon them altogether and create a new musical language, the 12-tone system. He then formed the Second Viennese School with his pupils Berg and Webern. The trio's work was truly radical, and after them music would never be the same again. Born in Vienna in 1874 to Jewish parents, Arnold Schoenberg was brought up a Catholic but later turned Protestant. He learnt the violin and taught himself the cello while at school. His only formal musical training came from a friend, Oskar Adler, and from his future brother-in-law, the composer and conductor Alexander Zemlinsky. After leaving school he worked in a bank, but when the bank became insolvent in 1895 he had to find another way of supporting himself. He did this by orchestrating and conducting operettas. In 1903, now aged 28, Schoenberg decided to return to Vienna. He joined a forward-looking group of artists and intellectuals and, with Zemlinsky, founded the Society of Creative Musicians to promote new music. Gustav Mahler acted as honorary president of the Society and always remained supportive of Schoenberg, even if he did not always understand his music.

September 1874 in Wien geboren und starb am 14. Juli 1951 in Los Angeles. Schönberg lernte ab 1882 Violine und später auch Cello und schrieb schon sehr früh Trios und Quartette für den Hausgebrauch. Er bildete sich autodidaktisch weiter, und nahm vorübergehend Unterricht bei seinem späteren Schwager Alexander von Zemlinsky. Er wurde, auf Empfehlung von Richard Strauss, Lehrer am Konservatorium in Berlin. Ab 1903 war er wieder in Wien, wo er begabte Schüler unterrichtete, die er durch Gustav Mahler und dem Musikwissenschaftler Guido Adler erhielt. Von 1925-1933 war Professor an der Hochschule für Musik in Berlin und der wanderte 1933 (über Frankreich und Spanien) nach Nordamerika aus. Er war dort bis 1944 Lehrer der University of South California in Los Angeles. Schönberg kam, von der Spätromantik und dem Impressionismus ausgehend, allmählich dazu die Tonalität zu verwerfen und er setzte an ihre Stelle das atonale Zwölftonsystem und die Reihentechnik (Dodekaphonie).
