Home Page Arnold Schönberg Life Arnold Schoenberg has exercised very considerable influence over the course of music in the 20th century, particularly through his development and promulgation of theories of composition in which unity in a work is provided by the use of a determined series, usually consisting of the twelve possible different semitones, their order also inverted or taken in retrograde form, and in transposed versions. Schoenberg's earlier compositions are post-romantic in character, followed by a period in which he developed his theories of atonality, music without a key or tonal centre. Born in Vienna in 1874, he spent his early career in Berlin, until the rise to power of Hitler made it necessary to leave Germany and find safety in America, where he died in 1951. With his pupils Anton Webern and Alban Berg , both of whom he outlived, he represents a group of composers known as the Second Viennese School. Schoenberg, Arnold (1874-1951), Austrian born composer, creator of the twelve-tone system of musical composition, and one of the most influential composers of the 20th century. Career in Vienna, Berlin, and the U.S. In 1903 Schoenberg returned to Vienna to teach. There he met his most successful students, the Austrian composers Anton Webern and Alban Berg, who became his close friends. In his compositions, Schoenberg employed far-reaching harmonies, a trait that later developed into atonality. Because of this, riots erupted at both premieres of his first two string quartets in 1905 and 1908. Such experiences led him often to feel persecuted by a public that could not understand his music. Schoenberg and his family fled Nazi Germany to Paris in 1933. In 1934 they immigrated to the U.S., and he accepted a teaching position in Boston. The next year, because of his health, they moved to Los Angeles, where his two youngest sons were born. After a year as a lecturer at the University of Southern California (1935), he taught at the University of California at Los Angeles from 1936 to 1944. He became a U.S. citizen in 1941. Schoenberg fell seriously ill in 1946, and at one point his heart stopped beating; this experience is reflected in his String Trio (1946), written after his recovery. In retirement he continued to teach and to compose. He died on July 13, 1951, in Los Angeles.

The following remarks concerning Arnold Schoenberg´s reflections on the people of Israel as the minority of "the inconceivable God" concentrate on his treatment of the issue in the libretto of Moses und Aron th century. 2. Although Schoenberg was always very cautious in giving information about his private life and in spite of the precarious situation of research concerning his biography, his deeply religious character becomes evident to anyone confronting his numerous and constant efforts at articulating his own self-understanding. Without a doubt, the life of the Jewish-born Schoenberg was decisively influenced by his religious interests and options. At the age of 18 he converted to Protestantism in predominantly Catholic Vienna and in 1933 decided in Paris to return back to Judaism, as a reaction against the growing anti-Semitic tendencies he had been observing for years. Although raised in a Jewish-orthodox atmosphere, Schoenberg showed an early interest in Christian spirituality, especially that of the Quakers. His later correspondance reveals that his readings of Emmanuel Swedenborg, of Balzac´s Gnostic inspired novel "Seraphita" or of Rudolf Steiner had bearing on his aesthetic and musical conceptions.

Anton von Webern Schönberg führt im Kreis des Vereins zum ersten Mal die symphonische Dichtung für Orchester "Pelleas und Melisande" auf. 21. Dezember: Die Uraufführung des ersten atonalen Werks der Musikgeschichte, des " II. Streichquartetts op. 10 ", in Wien wird zum Skandal. Ausstellung seiner expressionistischen Bilder in einer Wiener Buchhandlung. Er beendet die theoretische Abhandlung "Harmonielehre", die als ausgearbeitete, gedruckte Fassung seiner Kompositionskurse zu verstehen ist. Komposition der Melodramen "Pierrot lunaire".
