Franz Schubert "He was a very little man, but he was a giant."— A NTON H OLZAPFEL Franz Peter Schubert, youngest son of a parish schoolmaster and a cook, was born in the Lichtenthal district of Vienna on 31 January 1797. The Schubert family was musical. Father Schubert played the violincello, and Franz`s older brothers, Ignaz and Ferdinand, were violinists. Their music-making gave Franz Schubert his earliest musical impressions. Before long, Franz, too, was given instruction in the art, under the guidance of his father, his brother Ignaz, and Michael Holzer, choirmaster of the parish. "He seems to know the lessons perfectly before I begin to explain them to him," Holzer once told Schubert`s father in amazement. In his eleventh year, Schubert passed the entrance examinations for the Convict School, which trained choristers for the Imperial Court Chapel. Life at the Convict was not without hardship; the young music-students frequently suffered cold and hunger. "Hunger has become so pressing," Schubert wrote to his brother, Ferdinand, "that willy-nilly I must make a change. The two groschen that father gave me went in the first few days. If, then, I rely upon your aid, I hope I may do so without being ashamed (see Matt. ii, 4—So also thought I!) How about advancing me a couple of kreutzer monthly?" (The passage in the book of Matthew referenced is completely irrelevant in this case.) When Schubert became acclimated to his new surroundings at the convict he was far from unhappy. He was completely absorbed in music-study, finding therein endless fascination and adventure. He also made some intimate friendships, particularly one with Josef Spaun, seven years his senior, who remained an intimate friend for the remainder of his life.

Franz Schubert It was in Vienna itself that Franz Schubert was born in 1797. When he was very young his father and his older brother taught him to play the violin and the piano. In a few months his proficiency surpassed. So when the family realized Franz abilities they did everything they could with their modest income to get a good education for the boy. He was sent to the Stadtkonvikt in Vienna. Schubert left the Stadtkonvikt in 1813 to study teaching . During the three years that followed he worked as a low paid teacher. But he did not forget the music he loved. At this time he was extremely prolific. During a couple years he wrote two symphonies, 200-300 songs including the masterpiece "Gretchen am Spinnrade". All at the age of 17-18 years old. It was for the songs Schubert first became famous. But during this time he began to have financial difficulties. In 1815 he met Franz von Schober, an independently wealthy follower of Schubert's music. He persuaded Schubert to leave the teaching job which was affecting his composing, and come and live with him. Schubert left his old job and was now a free musician, without a steady income. It was at the home of Schober where Schubert met the great singer Johann Michael Vogl. Together they started the Schubertiads. They amused themselves, and together listened to Schubert at the piano and Vogl sing Schubert`s songs. Even if these were happy days, Schubert became anxious. He had no income and no home. He therefore worked one summer for a hungarian prince. He taught his two daughters to play the piano. But the only thing there, that could inspire Schubert's own composing was one of his pretty young students. Therefore much of the music from this time was written for piano four hands. But one summer was enough and he returned to his friends in Vienna.

He studied under his father, and subsequently under Holzer and Salieri, and in 1807, was first boy soprano in the Lichtenthal choir. In October, 1808, he entered the Imperial Choristers School, and soon gave evidence of extraordinary musical genius as a composer, his first effort being a pianoforte duet, early in 1810. During 1811 and 1812 he produced many instrumental pieces, also a "Salve Regina" and a "Kyrie". He left the Choir School in November, 1812, and took up work as a schoolmaster in order to avoid conscription. His "First Mass in F" was finished on 22 July, 1814, and performed by the Lichtenthal choir under the direction of Holzer. Competent critics have pronounced this mass as perhaps the most wonderful first work by any composer save the case of Beethoven's "Mass in C". Schubert conducted the second performance at the Augustinian church on 26 October, his brother, Ferdinand, presiding at the organ. During the same year he produced a symphony and a "Salve Regina";, as well as some songs and instrumental pieces. His famous "Erl King", dates from November, 1815, as does his "Mass in G" wonderful for a boy of eighteen. His compositions for 1816 include a "Salve Regina", a "Stabat Mater", a "Tantum Ergo", and a "Magnificat", as also two symphonies, and some delightful songs including the "Wanderer". He conducted the music at high Mass at the Alterehenfelder church on Easter Sunday, 1820, and in the same year produced an Easter cantata and an opera. His productivity from 1821 to 1824 was enormous, "Rosamunde" and his "Mass in A flat" being of permanent value. His glorious "Ave Maria" dates from 1825, apropos of which he writes that at the time he was filled with overpowering devotion to the Blessed Virgin. The three
