MIT celebrates composer Gunther Schuller's 75th birthday
Gunther Schuller
"Scholar, composer, conductor, teacher, author, music publisher, indefatigable advocate Gunther Schuller isn't merely a musician, he's a monopoly," wrote Alan Rich in New York Magazine more than a decade ago. This week MIT joins many US colleges, universities and music groups in celebrating the 75th birthday of the man who was once referred to as a "Pulitzer Prize-winning practitioner of the 28-hour day." On Thursday, Nov. 16, MIT presents a panel discussion on Third Stream music (the fusion of classical composition and jazz improvisation) with Mr. Schuller, pianist Ran Blake and MIT Lecturer Mark Harvey at 7:30pm in Killian Hall. On Saturday, Nov. 18, MIT musicians join special guests for an All-Schuller concert at 8pm in Kresge Auditorium. The events have been organized by Frederick Harris, lecturer in music and director of MIT's Wind Ensemble, who studied conducting with Mr. Schuller and once commissioned a piece by him for the wind ensemble at Belmont High School, where Dr. Harris was instrumental music director. Dr. Harris is one of many musicians throughout the world who have been inspired by Mr. Schuller over the artist's long and multifaceted career. Mr. Schuller, said Dr. Harris, was a "profound influence on me not just as a conductor but as a musical ideal to aspire to. He exemplifies the very highest level of musical integrity in every thing he does as composer, conductor, educator, author, music publisher, recording producer, musical advocate and citizen."

44. Gunther Schuller Conducts Beethoven & Brahms
gunther schuller conducts Beethoven Brahms. Beethoven Symphony No. 5 in C minor,Op. Studio orchestra conducted by gunther schuller. GM Recordings, GM 2051.
http://www.classical-music-review.org/reviews/Schuller.html
Classical Music Review: New Releases Beethoven: Symphony No. 5 in C minor, Op. 67 ; Brahms: Symphony No. 1 in C minor, Op. 68. Studio orchestra conducted by Gunther Schuller. GM Recordings, GM 2051. Do we really need another recording of these two symphonies? There are, after all, countless others by legendary conductors, and didn't Claudio Abbado's recent Fifth on Deutsche Grammophon sell only 500 copies? Composer-conductor Gunther Schuller has thought long and hard about these things, and his recording of the two most famous C minor symphonies ever written has a different aim than most: he wants to get to the core of these scores. But that's not easy when you consider the interpretive excesses visited upon them, and the "tradition" these have spawned. Schuller clears these away: he takes Beethoven's metronome markings at face value and makes them work. Much of the Fifth's dynamism, of course, comes from its rhythm, and its speeds and their relation to each other clarify its structure. Schuller also gets his players, drawn from New York's finest orchestras, to pay special attention to dynamics so that you hear the rightness of Beethoven's scoring not flashy but completely effective. His no-nonesense approach shows how Beethoven's form gets its weight from carefully balanced instrumental color, and the nuances Schuller draws from his players is amazing. Rarely has this hoary old war-horse sounded so vigorous. The story of Brahms' struggles with his First he was cowering in Beethoven's shadow, etc. have obscured its magnificence. It's also probably a harder nut to crack than the Fifth because Brahms' wrote no metronome markings. Schuller therefore had to arrive at workable speeds on his own c 92 for Movement 1, c 50-55 for 2, c 92-76 for 3, c 100-126 for 4 which feel organic. Brahms has marked 1 and 2 as

    CONCERT REVIEW
A Star-Studded Performance By Guan-Jong Chen Staff Writer Last Saturday, the MIT Wind Ensemble, MIT Chamber Society, MIT Jazz Chamber Orchestra, and a few guest musicians presented a concert celebrating the 75th birthday of renowned musician and composer Gunther Schuller. In all respects, the concert was very special because all the works presented were composed by Schuller and the caliber of the musicianship at the concert was extremely high. Music for Young People: Five Characteristic Pieces for string quartet, violin concerto Song and Dance Sonata for Alto Saxophone and Piano Blue Dawn into White Heat for wind ensemble, and various other pieces from the guest musicians. Music for Young People:Five Characteristic Pieces was the first piece that was performed in the concert. It is a quartet for violin, cello, flute, and piano. Four performers from the MIT Chamber Music Society played in this quartet: Margy Glasner G on flute; Laurel Smith G on violin; Alan deLespinasse on cello; and Tilman Bauer G on piano. The musical piece is comprised of five movements: The Thinker The Fiddler The Swan The Ghost ; and The Clown . The musicians did a wonderful job. It was a flawless performance. Also, each movement truly reflects the character that it is describing. In
