NEW ZEALAND SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA WITH CONDUCTOR GUNTHER SCHULLER
The Biennial Festival of Music is delighted to welcome back Gunther Schuller, whose Parsifal thrilled audiences in 1995. For the 1997 Biennial, Gunther Schuller conducts the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra, which has consistently attracted accolades for its ‘remarkable intuition’, ‘fire and passion’ and ‘eloquent shading’. Together they bring alive the music of Strauss and Brahms in two important concerts with soloists soprano Mechthild Gessendorf and pianist Piers Lane. Richard Strauss created some of the most famous heroines in all opera. Every lover of the genre is familiar with the Marschallin in Der Rosenkavalier, Arabella, and the Countess from Capriccio.
One of the leading interpreters of these roles is German soprano Mechthild Gessendorf in her Australian debut. Der Rosenkavalier, featured in this performance, has been Ms Gessendorf 's signature role in many international theatres from the Zurich Opera to the Metropolitan in New York. She has worked consistently throughout Europe, Canada and the USA, appearing with the Chicago Symphony and the Toronto Symphony among others.
This is a rare opportunity to hear a great diva, orchestra and conductor - each with an enviable command of the Strauss repertoire - in masterworks which illustrate the richness, variety and inventive power of his work.

Swedish Chef
Jerusalem Music Series
The "Swedish Chef" is a Jerusalem Music series that promotes original jazz music and Third Stream music. The concerts are held weekly on Saturday night at the Gerard Behar Center with the support of the Municipality of Jerusalem. Third Stream music is a term coined by composer Gunther Schuller to describe music that combines elements of jazz and modern classical music. The "Swedish Chef" series is managed by Yitzhak Yedid and Ora Boasson, graduates of the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston. "The Swedish Chef offers our listeners a blend of different cultural influences together with the artist's own style," says Yitzhak Yedid. "Jerusalem is a special place in terms of the music it produces and the Swedish Chef provides an ideal stage to showcase local artists." The "Hatabach Hashvedi" (hebrew for Swedish Chef) has hosted a wide range of musicians, including jazz bassist Eli Magen, vocalist Julia Feldman, pianist Judy Lewis, and saxophonists Boris Gamer and Peter Wertheimer Other performers are reedman Harold Rubin and the Yitzhak Yedid Trio with pianist Yedid, bassist Boasson and drummer Adi Nedelin. Yitzhak Yedid Trio
The music of Yedid Trio is an original synthesis between Western jazz, 20th century classical music and the traditional modes of the Middle East. This includes melodic micro tonality, harmonies growing out of the melodies and improvised interpretations upon the music written by Yitzhak Yedid. The trio has performed in concerts throughout Israel. Its members have established a successful concert series of Third Stream Music in Jerusalem. The aim of the series is to bring together new trends of jazz and creative classical music. Pianist and composer Yitzhak Yedid has performed solo in festivals in Israel, Scandinavia and in the US, among other places in the Jordan Hall. He recently played solo in a concert in Sweden as a special guest of pianist Michael Smith. Yitzhak Yedid has made several recordings; one includes a duet with the great American pianist Paul Bley and a trio with Masashy Harada and Bahab Rainy. His recent CD is an original composition for solo piano, where he incorporates his natural background of Middle Eastern traditional music alongside with his love of jazz. His music is an original combination of jazz, classical music and the traditional modes of the Middle East.Yitzhak Yedid was born in Jerusalem into a family originating from Haleb, Syria. He is a graduate of the Jazz department at the Rubin Academy in Jerusalem. Between 1997-98 he studied with Ran Blake and Paul Bley at the New England Conservatory in Boston. Ora Boasson is first contrabassist in the Israel Camerata Orchestra, Jerusalem. She has participated in many chamber music and jazz festivals, among them Kfar Blum, "Sounds from the Red Sea" and the JISA festival in Canada. She is a member of the "Barock Bow" orchestra and the "Daniel" Baroque Ensemble, as well as plays in several chamber music groups. Ora Boasson participates in the "Caprisma" ensemble, specializing on contemporary music. She has performed numerous times works by Israeli composers, and is also active in jazz ensembles and in free improvisation groups. Ora Boasson received a Bachelor's Degree at the New England Conservatory in Boston, and studied with Michael Klinghofer, Donald Belma and Oary Carr. She is a recipient of AICF scholarship since 1988.

'Of Reminiscences and Reflections': 75 Years of Gunther Schuller by Anthony Cheung
Contributing Writer Gunther Schuller, a legendary figure in American music, celebrates his 75th birthday this month. For nearly 60 years, as a performer, composer, conductor, educator and historian, he has contributed to the musical vitality of America through his innumerable accomplishments. Growing up in New York City, Schuller was at first indifferent to the musical opportunities that surrounded him. "I not only wasn't interested, I didn't have any talent," the long-time Boston resident said in an interview with The Crimson. His father was a violinist in the New York Philharmonic, though, and it was through attending many concerts that Schuller started collecting records at the age of 13. "By 16, I had two or three thousand recordings. Composers like Stravinsky, Schoenberg, Ravel, Debussy, Scriabinthey were my initial influences. They precipitated my harmonic and rhythmic styles." Schuller originally played the flute, but switched to the French horn at age 14. Two years later he made his debut when the New York Philharmonic hired him as an extra horn player in the legendary premiere of Shostakovich's Leningrad Symphony, conducted by Arturo Toscanini. The precocious musician was then hired at the tender age of 17 as principal horn of the Cincinnati Symphony. The orchestra's music director, Eugene Goossens, was a major influence. "He was a great mentor, and he supported my composing. He arranged for my professional debut as a composer, when he arranged for me to play my own horn concerto with the Cincinnati Symphony in 1945."
