GUNTHER SCHULLER:
JUMPIN'IN THE FUTURE
(GM Recordings GM3010CD) [1988] Gunther Schuller is probably best known these days as a composer of modern "classical" music, and there are a number of CDs devoted to performances of his compositions. One of my favorites is a Mercury "Living Presence" CD of Antal Dorati with the Minneapolis Symphony Orchestra. In addition to compositions by Gershwin, Copland and Bloch, this CD contains Schuller's "Seven Studies on Themes of Paul Klee," a related set of works based on seven Klee paintings and named after them. Typically, the music is "modern" in the sense that an abstract and atonal vocabulary is employed. But Gunther Schuller is also a French horn player who, in addition to a position with New York's Metropolitan Opera Orchestra, spent much of the late forties and fifties as a session player and jazz musician. He was part of the famous nine-piece "Birth of the Cool" arranger/composer's rehearsal orchestra fronted by Miles Davis in 1949. And he was closely involved in many of the more ambitious efforts in jazz composition of the fifties, giving them the name "Third Stream Music." (See my review of THE BIRTH OF THE THIRD STREAM .) In addition, it was Schuller who pulled together, edited, and conducted the posthumous Charles Mingus EPITAPH (

Matthew Boynick His Teachers Gunther Schuller
As well as being an accomplished and prodigious composer, Gunther Schuller is a renowned conductor who has worked with major orchestras in Europe and the United States. Besides conducting the standard repertoire, his unselfish promotion of the music of other composers, such as Milton Babbitt, have made him a champion of contemporary music. Schuller's deep understanding of 20th-century compositional techniques and his expertise as a conductor have produced some of the best performances and recordings of this repertoire in the world. Although he is a champion of works by other composers, there are also many fine recordings of Schuller conducting his own compositions.
In addition to his work as a composer and performer, Schuller has written many articles on music ( Musings is a collection of his articles published in book form), edited editions of works by Ives and other composers, and taught at several institutions. He also had a long association with the Berkshire Music Center (Tanglewood) as composition teacher and artistic director. Since 1984 he has been artistic director of The Festival at Sandpoint in Idaho.

Professor Robert Levin
1. Lectures: M W F, 1-2 p.m. 2. Sections: TBA 3. Course description. The course will examine American jazz from the early 1930s by which time the migration of leading musicians from New Orleans and Kansas City to Chicago, New York and other metropolitan centers precipitated an evolution from the earlier Dixieland style to the mid 1940s and the emergence of bebop. The essence of this period was swing an elusive synthesis of foot-tapping rhythmic vitality with rhapsodic, soaring melodic invention. The relationship between arrangements and improvisation will be investigated by comparing selected alternate takes. Sociological issues and the relationship of swing era jazz to classical music and popular song will place swing's achievements into a broader historical and musical perspective. 4. Objectives. 5. Expectations regarding musical background. The course seeks to stimulate an informed appreciation of the giants of Swing Era music. Given that the main textbook, Gunther Schuller's The Swing Era , contains numerous musical examples, an ability to read music will greatly enhance understanding of the subject matter. Nonetheless, familiarity with musical notation will not be required. A course web site will seek to provide various information of benefit both to those unfamiliar with musical notation and the musically literate. This should be of help to all students, regardless of literacy. The determining factor in evaluating papers, quizzes and exams will be the quality of critical insight into the music, not the invocation of esoteric technical data. Students will be sectioned according to their abilities and experience.
