the Public Affairs and Record Home Page Current News News Archive Video Briefs Video Forums ... Home Page Composer Steve Reich Receives William Schuman Award Honor Will Be Presented Sept. 21 At Miller Theatre By Ulrika Brand Steve Reich Composer Steve Reich has been named winner of the William Schuman Award by Columbia University's School of the Arts. Bruce Ferguson, dean of the School of the Arts, who announced the award, will present it at a ceremony and concert to be held at Miller Theatre on Thursday, Sept. 21, at 8:00 p.m. This event also launches the 2000-2001 season at Miller Theatre, under Executive Director George Steel. The musical program will consist of Steve Reich and Musicians performing Drumming, Part I, Sextet, and Music for 18 Musicians. (The program will be repeated with a slight variation Saturday, Sept. 23, at 8:00 p.m.) In announcing the award, Ferguson said, "Steve Reich has pursued a distinctly individual path, and in so doing has reshaped the American musical landscape. It is fitting that a composer whose work has inspired and influenced artists across many other disciplines as well, be honored by the School of the Arts at Columbia University. His work embodies those qualities that define great artists: vision, craft, and artistic resonance through intensely personal means." Named for its first recipient, William Schuman, the award, in the form of a direct, unrestricted grant of $50,000, is one of the largest given to an American composer and is awarded in recognition of lifetime achievement. It was established in 1981 by a bequest from the Schuman family and has been awarded irregularly: five times over 19 years. After Schuman, the winners were David Diamond, Gunther Schuller, Milton Babbitt, and Hugo Weisgall.

Schuman, William 1910-92, American composer, b. New York City. Schuman taught at Sarah Lawrence College (1935-45) and was twice a Guggenheim Fellow (1939 and 1940). While president of the Juilliard School of Music (1945-62) he helped initiate the Juilliard Quartet. He was also president of Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts (1962-69). His outstanding compositions are his Third Symphony and his Fourth Symphony (both 1941); his American Festival Overture Symphony for Strings Newsreel (1941); two secular cantatas, This is Our Time (1940) and A Free Song (1942; awarded the first Pulitzer Prize in music, 1943); the ballet Undertow (1945); the opera The Mighty Casey (Hartford, 1953); and several chamber works. His music is highly contrapuntal and often employs complex rhythms suggestive of jazz. Schuman was awarded a second Pulitzer in 1985, this time for his lifetime achievements in composition, teaching, and administration.

TABLE 12 SEVENTY-THREE COMPOSITIONS FAMILIAR TO ALL TWENTY EVALUATORS RECEIVING THE MINIMUM PERCENTAGE OF POINTS LISTED BY PERCENTAGE OF MAXIMUM POSSIBLE POINTS The purpose of this study was to determine what available compositions, from a selected list of compositions for wind and percussion instruments in ensemble combination utilizing a conductor, most closely meet the criteria of serious artistic merit? One hundred ninety-one compositions were identified as meeting the specific criteria of serious artistic merit and are identified in Tables 12-17 listed in the study. These Tables are organized according to evaluator familiarity. Table 12 is a listing of 73 compositions known to all twenty evaluators. The percentage of maximun possible points is the derived from comparing the total number of points awared by the evaluators to the maximum number of points the piece could recieve. For more in formation see A List of Compositions.
