There should also be a female head to adorn our museum. And how better could I celebrate this day, the eve of a beloveds birthday, than by devoting myself to one of her creations. It may well be that her works derive from so exotic an imagination that mere practice alone will not suffice to pursue these rarely interlaced arabesquesor from so profoundly tempered a spirit that, once the graphic, the representational in her compositions recedes into the background, one does not immediately grasp the dreamlike and the introspective. Thus, the majority will lay them aside after a quick glance; indeed, it is easy to believe that contest juries will award these among a hundred entries, the last prize rather than the first, so far below the surface lie the pearls and laurel wreaths. Nevertheless, I should be more than usually curious about the verdict of the academicians. For the betray, on the one hand, and plain for anyone to see, a life effulgent and tender, apparently responsive to the slightest stirring; on the other hand, a wealth of unconventional resources, an ability to entangle the secret, more deeply twisting threads and then to unravel them, something one is accustomed to expect only from experienced artistsand males!

Schumann, Clara Josephine (1819-1896), German pianist and composer, born Clara Wieck in Leipzig, and trained by her father, Friedrich Wieck. A pianist from the age of eight, she was already well known in Europe when, in 1840, she married the composer Robert Schumann over the strenuous objection of her father. She introduced many of Schumann's piano works, including his Piano Concerto (1845). After Schumann's death, she became one of the great pianists of the time, touring almost constantly to support her family. She did much to promote the music of her lifelong friend Johannes Brahms. She edited the complete works of Schumann and from 1872 to 1892 taught at the Hoch Conservatorium in Frankfurt. Home Back

To commemorate the centennial of the death of Clara Schumann on May 20, 1896, festivals, concerts, symposia, and press discussions of this remarkable musician and woman were held in Austria, Australia, Great Britain, and Germany. There were undoubtedly other events held as well, but I will report only on those held between April 20 and June 9 which I attended or about which I was informed. I have listed the performances of works primarily by Clara and Robert Schumann, although some of the concerts included works by their contemporaries.
April 22-24, 1996, Vienna: International Clara Schumann Symposium
Dr. Ostleitner persuaded a number of Viennese firms to cooperate with and sponsor the symposium. Among others, Gerstner Konditorei not only provided the participants with Viennese refreshments throughout the three days, but created a 1996 version of the Clara Wieck-Torte that had delighted the Viennese on the young pianist's 1837-38 visit.

Amazon Selections Sonata Va 1/2/Marchenbilder Schumann (Master Musicians Series) Background: As a young man, Johannes Brahms was a close friend of Robert and Clara Schumann. They socialized publicly and Johannes was often in the Schumann home. When Robert Schumann died, Johannes continued his friendship with Clara. Clara Schumann, herself a renowned pianist, gave concerts that showcased her late husbands work to support herself and her children. It is not known whether Johannes had always loved Clara or if the affection sprang from the relationship that grew after Roberts death. History does tell us that Brahms professed his love for Clara though they never married.

Clara Josephine Wieck Schumann Clara moved to Berlin in 18S7, where she performed, taught, and edited Robert's works and.letters; she was known as a champ~on and interpreter of the music of Schumann and Brahms, and was a direct influence on their music. Her playing was characterized by technical mastery, thoughtful interpretation, poetic spirit, depth of feeling, a singing tone, and strict observance of the composer's markings. All her compositions date from 1853 or before, includin' 29 songs, 3 partsongs, 4 pieces for piano and orchestra, 20 pieces for solo piano, and cada~s for 3 piano concertos by Beethoven and Mozart; her works are nurnberod up to Op. 23, with 17 others without opus numbers.
