    Who Was Clara?
    Notes by Frances Scott
Clara Wieck Schumann was one of the most famous pianists in history. Born in Leipzig, Germany in 1819, Clara was the eldest surviving child of Frederick and Marianne Wieck. Considered a slow learner (Clara did not speak even single words until she was 4 years old) her parents assumed that she was mostly deaf. At the age of 5, her parents divorced. From this time on until adulthood, Clara was not allowed to see her mother. Clara lived in a motherless house with her father and his servants, until her father remarried 4 years later. At the age of 5, Clara’s father began teaching her little piano pieces by ear, to convince himself that she was not deaf. Clara learned quickly and fulfilled her father’s dream of creating a musical prodigy. At 9 she played public concerts, and as an 11-year-old she toured Paris playing her own solo recitals. She was not allowed childhood playtime since she was always practicing and taking lessons from her father, being tutored in languages and music theory, and attending concerts. As a teenager, Clara fell in love with Robert Schumann, one of her father’s piano students, who was destined to become one of the most beloved composers of the19th century. Schumann, who was 9 years older than Clara, had been living in the Wieck household as a pupil/boarder since Clara was 11. When Frederick Wieck found that Clara and Robert were in love, he was furious and threatened to shoot Robert if Clara ever saw him again. Finally after years of conflict with Wieck, Clara and Robert won a court settlement and were married, one day before Clara was 21.

Excerpts from the sleeve notes Fanny Mendelssohn was born in 1805, and Clara Schumann – née Wieck – in 1819. Between these dates were born no lesser figures than Fanny’s brother Felix Mendelssohn (1809), Frederic Chopin and Robert Schumann (both 1810), Franz Liszt (1811), Richard Wagner and Giuseppe Verdi (both in 1813). But it was a period in which women were little regarded as professional musicians, and so it was that Fanny Mendelssohn, cushioned by comfort and wealth, found consolation in the success of her brilliant brother Felix, whilst Clara Schumann became a pianist of international repute initially through the efforts of her father, Friedrich Wieck, a man of formidable ambition determined that his daughter would succeed. Clara was later to become the loving wife of an ailing genius, the mother of eight children, and a composer of considerable attainment. Psychologists have long speculated on the relationships both women had with men who were not their husbands. Though nothing has been proved in either case, there is little doubt that Fanny’s love for her brother Felix was a force of which he himself was well aware and even dangerously played upon from time to time, though he finally (and fortunately) realised that any sort of encouragement might lead to a darker and less normal attachment. With Clara, it was her emotional ties with the younger Johannes Brahms that led to speculation, and here, once again, it seems that each witheld from developing their mutual affection beyond the platonic state.

    http://azaz.essortment.com/robertclarasch_rjya.htm
Robert and Clara Schumann - a biography
Robert Schumann, composer and pianist - Clara Schumann, virtuoso pianist, composer, and wife of Robert Schumann - their lives and careers intertwined almost indefinably in history. Robert Alexander Schumann was born in 1810 in Zwickau, Saxony. He showed talent with both the written word and the piano. At the age of six, Robert began musical training and wrote his first composition at the age of twelve. His high school years proved the young Schumann to be as gifted in the literary arts as in music, influenced immeasurably by the Austrian composer Franz Schubert and the German poet Jean Paul Richter. Because Robert was uncertain which course of study to pursue, Robert's mother endeavored to place him in the law school at Leipzig. It was there that Robert met and studied under Friedrich Wieck, a well-known and celebrated piano teacher of the area. bodyOffer(30638) Friedrich Wieck recognized Robert's talent, but from the first, he doubted Robert's stability and discipline. These early impressions of the young man influenced Herr Wieck in his later assessment of his qualifications as a suitable husband for his daughter Clara Josephine Wieck. Clara Wieck, nine years younger than Robert Schumann, was a gifted pianist. Under her father's tutelage since the age of five, Clara had long been recognized as a musical child prodigy with a touring career that began at age nine. As a teenager, she was elected to the honored Music Society of Vienna.
