Introduction (born Zwickau, 8 June 1810; died Endenich, 29 July 1856). The son of a bookseller, he early showed ability as a pianist and an interest in composing as well as literary leanings. He was also enthusiastic over the writings of 'Jean Paul' (J.P.F. Richter), girl friends and drinking champagne, tastes he retained. In 1821 he went to Leipzig to study law but instead spent his time in musical, social and literary activities. He wrote some piano music and took lessons from Friedrich Wieck. After a spell in Heidelberg, ostensibly studying law but actually music, he persuaded his family that he should give up law in favour of a pianist's career, and in 1830 he went to live with Wieck at Leipzig. But he soon had trouble with his hands (allegedly due to a machine to strengthen his fingers, but more likely through remedies for a syphilitic sore). Composition, however, continued; several piano works date from this period. In 1834 Schumann founded a music journal, the

Cette constante, c'est la conscience indéfectible de la richesse de la réalité sensible, richesse irréductible par essence à toute systématisation par l'esprit humain. With these paintings and keyboard instruments, the artist Cynthia Large explores the overlapping spheres of music, magick and mental illness. This page includes a series of paintings dedicated to the lives of Clara and robert schumann, and a number of small magickal pianos and organs capable of conjuring saints and demons alike. A tribute to the poet Federico Garcia Lorca is also displayed here in the form of an altarpiece comprised of organ pipes, a keyboard, and a painting of the poet himself. Come in and be enlightened.

    ISSN 1077-4203 "Dichten ="
ISBN 0-930901-95-9, paper $8 Heiligenanstalt contains four fictions "around" the composers Chopin, Bruckner, Schubert, and the trio of Brahms, Clara and Robert Schumann. All presided over by Beethoven whose "Heiligenstadt Testament" is evoked by the title (literally: "Saints' Asylum": a reference to Robert Schumann's years of insanity). Mayrocker has worked from biographical material, but has above all, "looked into the eye of the hurricane."
Friederike Mayrocker is one of the most original (and prominent) Austrian writers today, famous for the baroque, "hallucinatory" quality of her poetry and prose. She was born in 1924 in Vienna, where she continues to live. In the 1960s she was associated with the experimental "Vienna Group." She has received many prestigious literary prizes in both Austria and Germany, and, in 1997, the International Prize of The America Awards.
"The prose dances like fingerwork on keys.... Each of the four writings sprung from composers' lives finds its own form of telling yet all share an elegiac tone concerned with 'the last time' and the time before that."

    Schumann, Robert Alexander
composer germany 8 Jun 1810, Zwickau - 29 Jul 1856, Endenich (near Bonn)
    Grave location: Bonn: Alter Friedhof
Studied Law at Leipzig, but around 1830 he focused his attention to music. Due to a paralysed right hand he wasn't able to play the piano well enough and he turned to composition. After a long struggle for her hand he married Clara Wieck in 1840 and in 1843 they went to live in Dresden.
In 1850 the Schumanns and their children moved to Düsseldorf, where his "Rheinische Sinfonie" was first performed on Februari 6, 1851. Schumann suffered from health problems and he conducted his last concert in Düsseldorf on October 27, 1853. In January 1854 he and Clara gave concerts in Hanover, but on February 2 he jumped from a bridge into the river Rhein. He was saved by fisherman, but his mental illness (probably caused by syphilis) was so severe that he had to spend the rest of his life in a mental institution at Endenich, near Bonn.
He was buried at the Alter Friedhof in Bonn, a place he visited several times during his life to take a look at the tomb of Schiller's wife Charlotte.

Sonata Va 1/2/Marchenbilder Schumann (Master Musicians Series) Background: As a young man, Johannes Brahms was a close friend of Robert and Clara Schumann. They socialized publicly and Johannes was often in the Schumann home. When Robert Schumann died, Johannes continued his friendship with Clara. Clara Schumann, herself a renowned pianist, gave concerts that showcased her late husband’s work to support herself and her children. It is not known whether Johannes had always loved Clara or if the affection sprang from the relationship that grew after Robert’s death. History does tell us that Brahms professed his love for Clara though they never married.
For more detailed biographies of each of these classical composers, refer to:
    Johannes Brahms
, and Robert Schumann , by Betty Fry.

Assignment Choices: 1. Write a dialogue that might have taken place between Clara and Johannes after Robert’s death. Begin the conversation with Brahms confessing to Clara that he loves her. Use your imagination. Here are some questions to get you started thinking:
    - What might Brahms say to Clara to first open up the subject of his love for her?
