Biography
Robert Schumann
Composer Germany Born 8 Jun 1810
Died 29 Jul 1856
This attractive composer - a well-read, clever and hardworking man - was in fact a complex and troubled individual. He had two very different sides to his personaility: in his piano piece 'Carnaval' these two sides were portrayed as the characters Florestan and Eusebius. His troubled personality, and the depression that finally killed him, are as much a part of this enigmatic musician as the utterly romantic charm which is heard in his many songs and piano pieces.
Robert Schumann was born in Zwickau, the son of a bookseller and novelist who lived in the German province of Saxony. In 1826 his father died and Robert's younger sister killed herself. This was one of the first signs of the fault-line of mental fragility which ran through the Schumann family and would eventually destroy Robert.
Although music was his real passion, Schumann started to study law. He had already been composing with some ease for two years when, in 1830, he sought his mother's consent to change his occupation. He became a pupil of the celebrated music teacher Friedrich Wieck in Leipzig.

Amazon Products Schumann (Master Musicians Series) Robert Schumann's evergreen ‘ Piano Concerto in A minor' is a perfect introduction to the work of this famous and very prolific composer. The ‘ Opus 54, Third Movement ' of this joyous Romantic concerto is playing for me now as I write. It started off in what I can only describe as a blaze of color with a solo piano taking center stage. A running theme, still on the piano, but with a softer orchestral accompaniment, soon leads to the famous march like tune, first given quietly on the strings, and then again taken up by the piano. The sense of celebration throughout the music is infectious. And if you like piano music, then you will like this piece. Schumann wrote it for his talented wife Clara, who became an influential teacher as well as a notable composer, and went on to become the most important woman pianist of the 19 th century. Born on 8 th June, 1810, Robert Schumann, was the youngest son of August Schumann, an author and translator of Romantic literature, and a ‘notable citizen and bookseller' of the town of Zwickau in Saxony. Successful as he was though, August Schumann suffered from attacks of severe nervous anxiety. Robert's mother, who gave him his first music lessons, lived in an exaggerated state of romance, and was subject to sudden violent passions and sentimentalism.

    In his own words...

"The singing voice is hardly sufficient in itself; it cannot carry the whole task of interpretation unaided. In addition to its overall expression, the finer shadings of the poem must be represented as well provided that the melody does not suffer in the process." German composer, critic and music journalist. Schumann was one of the driving forces of the young Romantic movement in Germany.
Like many in his generation, Robert Schumann did not seem destined to become a composer, let alone one who would be so influential in the development of a new style. He was the son of a bookseller, and had a love of music and literature. However, at his mother's insistence, he went to Leipzig to study law. While there, he also studied piano with an ambitious teacher by the name of Friedrich Weick, whose daughter he would one day marry. He soon convinced his family of the futility of further law study and turned his full attention to music. Physical problems with his hands prevented him from continuing as a pianist, and he turned to composition and criticism.
In 1834, Schumann began the journal
