COMPOSERS Gerard Schurmann
Gerard Schurmann
b. Gerard Schurmann was born in 1924 of Dutch parents in the former Dutch East Indies, but lived in England from childhood until 1981, when he settled in the United States. He studied composition with Alan Rawsthorne, piano with Kathleen Long and conducting with Franco Ferrara. At the end of World War II, and service in the Royal Air Force, Schurmann briefly held the position of Netherlands cultural attaché in London. While still in his early twenties, he was appointed resident orchestral conductor at the Netherlands Radio in Hilversum. After his subsequent return to England, he established himself as a composer with a growing international reputation.
The recipient of numerous international awards and commissions, Gerard Schurmann has written music for a wide variety of media. His catalogue of concert works include the Six Studies of Francis Bacon (1968) and Variants (1970) for orchestra, The Gardens of Exile (1989-90) for cello and orchestra, the opera-cantata Piers Plowman(1979-80), the choral cantata The Double Heart (1976), the orchestral song-cycle Chuench'I (1967) on poems from the Chinese, concertos for Violin and Piano written for, and first performed by Ruggiero Ricci and John Ogdon respectively, a set of Nine Slovak Folk Songs (1988) for soprano, tenor and orchestra. There are also many solo instrumental works, songs and chamber music.
One of Gerard Schurmann's most recent major orchestral works is his Concerto for Orchestra, commissioned by the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra and first performed by them for their centenary anniversary concert in March 1996, with conductor Edo de Waart. The Concerto for Orchestra has recently been recorded on the Chandos label, together with the composer's Violin Concerto with soloist Olivier Charlier. This CD features Gerard Schurmann conducting the BBC Philharmonic and is due for general release in February 2002.

Pittsburgh Symphony, Edo de Waart, conductor
Commissioned by the Pittsburgh Symphony for their Centenary Season Critical Acclaim:
It's not often that a Pittsburgh Symphony subscription audience rises to its feet and cheers the composer of a new work, bringing him back to the stage for numerous bows. That's what happened at the world premiere of Gerard Schurmann's Concerto for Orchestra . Schurmann's Concerto for Orchestra is colorfully scored, based on substantial material, varied in its five movements...This was everything a symphony concert should be.
Robert Croan, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette Gerard Schurmann admits his Concerto for Orchestra was unavoidably penned in the shadow of Bela Bartok. Yet Schurmann's Concerto offered only a few hints of Bartok-inspired images. The work's skeletal frame is borrowed outright. The remainder is highly original, developed in a fusillade of sound that pulls its thunder from full-bodied string sections and a rounded palette of solo instruments. ...This, overall, is an exhibit of compositional mastery and a mighty contribution.
    Todd Gutnick, Pittsburgh Tribune Review

THE LOST CONTINENT Gerard Schurmann MMMm
Review by Peter Lane The vaults of Hammer Studios continue to disgorge musical treasures. Following the recent CD of Franz Reizenstein's tremendous score for The Mummy the release of Gerard Schurmann's music for The Lost Continent further demonstrates the quality products that classical composers brought to the small but successful British production company. Although he did not realise it at the time, Schurmann was not first choice as composer for the 1968 tale of a ship's crew and passengers battling all manner of nasties in the Sargasso Sea. No less a figure than Benjamin Frankel had written and recorded a score that for some reason was rejected by the film's producer. (Incidentally, following the revival of interest in Frankel, as a result of the re-recording of his Battle of the Bulge ,it would be great if GDI could release his rejected score).

    12. Gerard Schurmann - A Biography By Earl Tomson
a biography. gerard schurmann was born of a Dutch father and Hungarian mother inthe former Dutch East Indies. gerard schurmann, writing in 'The Listener'.
    http://www.gerard-schurmann.com/tomson.htm
a biography Gerard Schurmann was born of a Dutch father and Hungarian mother in the former Dutch East Indies. He left his home at an early age and grew up in England in the care of an uncle, thus avoiding the Japanese occupation of the islands. Influences from his colourful background manifest themselves in music of a distinctive character. Inherent in his individual musical language are the intervals derived from pentatonic scales which he absorbed as a boy from the local gamelan music of Java and from the Hungarian heritage of his mother, a gifted pianist and accompanist. These melodic derivations, with their harmonic resonances, give rise to an exotic and often heightened emotional intensity in his music. Another influence, more identified with England, can be traced back to Schurmann's association with the composer Alan Rawsthorne, his mentor and life-long friend. This continued for several years until Eduard van Beinum, the conductor of the Concertgebouw Orchestra in Amsterdam, used his influence to help him attain the position of resident orchestral conductor at the Dutch Radio in Hilversum. At the end of his contract there, he returned to England determined to devote his life mainly to composition, henceforth limiting his conducting activities to guest appearances. As a composer, Schurmann found himself able to earn a living by writing music for films. In 1980, he was invited by the U.S. State Department to tour orchestras and universities in the United States, a five months visit also partly sponsored by the British Council. In 1981, he moved to the USA, where he settled in the Hollywood Hills, California. While there, he continued to receive many commissions for concert works and became associated with the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra through the conductor Lorin Maazel who championed his music, first with the Cleveland Orchestra and subsequently in Pittsburgh. In recent years, Schurmann's musical style has blossomed, becoming more directly communicative, while still retaining its characteristic energy and drive. His output is not large, but varied, meticulously crafted around moments of poignancy and an often elegantly sensuous melodic line.
