JOSEPH SCHWANTNER A BIOGRAPHY OF A CONTEMPORARY COMPOSER Most composers trace their musical beginnings back to the piano or another symphonic instrument. Many are European. And quite a few of them are dead. Not Joseph Schwantner. That's right, Schwantner is still alive and kicking. He even has his own homepage at www.schwantner.net . He teaches all over the United States, at schools such as Juilliard, Yale, and Eastman. He's performed all over the world, too. In 1979, he won the Pulitzer Prize and in 1985 he won a Grammy. Strangely enough, the composer started out as a rock guitarist. He moved onto symphonic music quickly, though. When he was 25, he completed his doctorate at Northwestern University, after attending Chicago Conservatory. Since then, he has composed many orchestral pieces, often highlighting the percussion section or guitar. He also uses writings and speeches in his works. For instance, he uses parts of Martin Luther King, Jr.'s speeches in his composition, New Morning for the World . He has also drawn on the written word in Four Poems of Agueda Pizarro.

Joseph Schwantner Overview Recordings Scores - Books - Links Born: March 22, 1943, Chicago, Illinois, USA Schwantner's first work for band, and the mountains rising nowhere , is one of the cornerstones of the modern band and wind ensemble repertoire. In 1994, Donald Hunsberger wrote that "More so than any other work, this composition has probably provided the major impetus for the development of the wind band and its current repertoire during the last two decades." Hunsberger and the Eastman Wind Ensemble premiered it and have recorded it twice; it is one of their signature repertory pieces. Their original recording on a Mercury LP has not yet made it to CD, leaving their "Live in Osaka" recording as the first choice today. It is an incredible piece, and even if the original recording has never been equaled in some respects (especially in clarity of recording the percussion section), the Osaka recording reveals many of the work's wonders. Fortunately Schwantner's other band works are not being neglected, thanks to Corporon's fine recordings.
