62. Slices Of America - Athens, GA: Taylor Meets Dr. Schwantner
In this class I learned about joseph schwantner, a Pulitzer Prize winningcomposer who has three incredibly unique and difficult pieces for band.
http://www.slicesofamerica.com/schwantner.html
Athens, GA
University of Georgia
February 26-28, 2002
Introduction: A situation like this deserves an introduction...
In the Fall of 2001 I took a band literature class. Just as any English literature class would teach the most important writers and writings in history, this class taught the most important composers and pieces for band. In this class I learned about Joseph Schwantner, a Pulitzer Prize winning composer who has three incredibly unique and difficult pieces for band. He composed them over a twenty year period. Anyway, to make a long story a bit shorter, this semester, I decided to investigate how these three works can be grouped together to form one large three-movement work. I was curious about Dr. Schwantner's view on this topic, so I emailed him. It wasn't very difficult to obtain his e-mail address being that it's on his webpage. So I asked him what his stance was on having the three pieces fit together as one large work... Dear Mr. Lasseigne, My original intention was to have a triology of pieces for wind ensembe that could be performed either independently or as a single larger three-movement work. It took almost 20 years for that idea to come to fruition. This week, I will be the guest composer in residence at the University of Georgia where their wind ensemble will perform the entire triology. My prefernce for the ordering is: From a Dark Millennium In evening's stilness ...and the mountains rising nowhere. Sincerely, Joseph Schwantner School of Music Yale University

63. Classical Net Review - Corigliano, Schwantner & Foss - American Landscapes
joseph schwantner, against the odds, began as a rock guitarist. He has sincedistinguished himself as a classical composer, with a Pulitzer, yet.

In the early 60s, Lukas Foss, one of our most interesting musical minds, forsook his brand of neo-classicism (he was its last brilliant practitioner) for more than a decade of constant experiment that led him to group improvisation, aleatorics, minimalism, and post-modernism before anybody thought to call it that. Even the failures impressed one with moments of strange new beauty. Stravinsky was a fan. When Bernstein looked over his shoulder, he saw Lukas Foss and Paul Bowles and paid both men's music the sincere complement of appropriation. Foss is no guitarist, and, as a showpiece for guitar technique, American Landscapes comes up short. He seems to regard the guitar as a violin without a bow, and in this follows Vivaldi's precedent. Still, the piece astonishes you. Foss has absorbed his experiments, and the experimentalism within his music, still present, has mellowed a bit. Nevertheless, the concerto ravishes and manages to surprise. Still, the fascination of the new-found land remains. The first movement evokes, to me, both the grand repose of the Baroque concerto and American rock and roll, with "power chords" stabbing through at unpredictable moments - the idiom of Foss's Bicentennial American Cantata. The second movement sings a set of variations on the American folk ballad "Wayfaring Stranger," heartbreaking and unpredictable at the same time. The finale transforms the guitar into bluegrass mandolin with a tour through fiddle tunes like "Dan Tucker" and "Old Joe Clark." It flashes and spats like fireworks without letup, and with an Ivesian joke at the end, cunningly designed to bring an audience to its feet. This is one gorgeous work.

Music for Solo Bassoon by Pulitzer Prize-Winning Composers
    By William Davis
One of the most prestigious awards which an American composer may receive is the Pulitzer Prize in Music. Columbia University has awarded these annually since 1943 for a work premiered in the U.S. in a particular year. While no composition for bassoon solo has won the Pulitzer Prize, six Pulitzer-winning composers have written such works. Perhaps because of their level of difficulty and/or their abstract contemporary style, some of these works are not widely performed nor even well known to bassoonists. The composers, the year in which they won the Pulitzer Prize, their works for solo bassoon, and the year in which the bassoon works were composed are as follows: Composer/Pulitzer DateBassoon Composition/Date 1. Leslie Bassett/1966 Metamorphoses for bassoon solo/1991 2. Charles Wuorinen/1970 Bassoon Variations, accompanied by harp and timpani/1972 3. Joseph Schwantner/1979 Chronicron for bassoon and piano/1967 4. Ellen Taaffe Zwilich/1983

The program focuses on studies in composition, including computer music and recording techniques. In addition, composers are urged to continue to develop competency both as instrumentalists and conductors. Students are encouraged to take as many courses as possible in music history and literature, and are required to complete successfully courses in the analysis of tonal and nontonal music.
Composers are expected to produce enough work in their two-year residency for one full concert. These works are interspersed during the six to eight concerts given each year under the rubric New Music New Haven.
