Bridging East and West Through MUSIC
CANCELED!!
An Interview with Bright Sheng
Taken from The Journal of the International Institute
The University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, Michigan Making East meet West has been one of the central themes of Composer Bright Sheng's life. A native of Shanghai, China, he began his musical education with piano lessons at the age of four. After the Cultural Revolution (1966 - 1976), he was one of the first students to be accepted by the Shanghai Conservatory of Music, where he earned his undergraduate degree in music composition. Sheng moved to the United States in 1982. His music has been performed to great critical acclaim by major ensembles and soloists around the world and he has won numberous awards and prizes both in China and in the United States. His H'un (Lacerations): in memoriam 1966-76, a dramatic orchestral portrait of the Cultural Revolution, was awarded first runner-up for the 1989 Pulitzer Prize. In 1991 he was again first runner-up for the Pulitzer for Four Movements for Piano Trio . Sheng is associate professor of music at the University of Michigan. Journal editor Michelle Harper interviewed Sheng at the International Institute in June.

[72:33] full-price by William Beh Having attended the concerts which preceded these recordings ( Flute Moon was performed on Jan 22, 2000 ), I can still remember distinctly, on the occasion, being overdosed and underwhelmed on the musical language of Bright Sheng. Listening to it again, after six months, it doesn't seem to sound as underwrought as one recalls. More importantly, this recording might just be the foothold by which Sheng's music can receive some serious critical assessment. Bright Sheng comes from the generation of Chinese-American artists who lived through and survived the Cultural Revolution. Today, they form an active company of composers (including Tan Dun, Chen Yi and Zhou Long) who draw upon both Western and Oriental influences in a fusion of styles, while constantly struggling to refine their craft and pushing back, in so many ways, their boundaries of expression. In their own way, they are a barometric indication of modern compositional tastes and styles. That said, the Singapore Symphony Orchestra is surprisingly conversant with Sheng's unique musical stylings, having had a long association with his music. The relationship goes back as far as 5 August 1994 when they gave the world premiere of

The Noise Rating Index is a partially-objective measurement of pager and handphone blasts, 9pm and 10pm watch beeps, coughing-during-the-pianissimo-bits, intra-audience conversation and other mind-bogglingly inept noises emitted in the concert hall during actual performance of music. It is measured on a scale of to 5, in increasing annoyance. This review has been kindly sponsored in part by the Singapore Symphonia Co. Ltd by Derek Lim Playing in a Chinese orchestra for ten years has lead me to strange avenues of Chinese music, and one of them is the opera. Bright Sheng's Two Poems for Cello and Orchestra make abundant use of the operatic style, but mostly in the second movement. First of all is the most clever use of the "cell" motive (once told what it meant, I understood immediately - it's a operatic quote "Ya Wei’r" or "duck's tail" - go figure [It's the way it moves when a duck waddles, isn't it? - Leon]

60. GO Brooklyn
To complement the Mahler work, Spano and the Philharmonic are playingworks by bright sheng his fulllength orchestral work Nanking!
http://www.go-brooklyn.com/html/issues/_vol25/25_17/philchina.html
BRIGHT IDEAS
A Philharmonic commission By Kevin Filipski
for The Brooklyn Papers
For the final concerts in what's been a tumultuous 2001-2002 season, Robert Spano and the Brooklyn Philharmonic are looking far eastward, to the "Eternal East," the great, multitudinous culture of China.
The main work on the April 26-27 program is Gustav Mahler's massive orchestral song-cycle that was inspired by the poetry of China's master poet Li-Po, "Das Lied von der Erde (The Song of the Earth)," which will be sung by mezzo-soprano Nancy Maultsby and tenor Anthony Dean Griffey.
To complement the Mahler work, Spano and the Philharmonic are playing works by Bright Sheng: his full-length orchestral work "Nanking! Nanking!" and a world premiere of the concert's opener, commissioned by the Philharmonic, "Tibetan Swing!"
Sheng, professor of music at the University of Michigan, spoke to GO Brooklyn from his home in Ann Arbor, to discuss his and Mahler's music and his relationship with Spano.
"He [Spano] had been wanting to do something of mine for a while, something to play along with the Mahler 'Das Lied,'" Sheng said. "When he heard 'Nanking,' he liked it very much, and he wanted to do that piece as well. So, even though the Brooklyn Philharmonic wanted to commission something from me for a while, with their financial situation recently, it's been difficult. And then they got a grant from the Koussevitzky Foundation, which enabled them to commission 'Tibetan Swing.'"
