AN AMERICAN'S PERSPECTIVE
July 3, 1998
The NewsHour with Jim Lehrer Transcript After a background piece by Spencer Michels , Elizabeth Farnsworth discusses the President's trip to China with four prominent Chinese-Americans. ELIZABETH FARNSWORTH: Now the President's trip as seen by four Chinese-Americans. Nien Cheng is the author of "Life and Death in Shanghai," an account of her six-year imprisonment during the Chinese cultural revolution. She was born in Beijing and now lives in Washington, D.C.; Eric Liu is a former speechwriter for President Clinton and author of the "Accidential Asian," which explores what it means to be Chinese-American. He was born in the United States and is enrolled now at Harvard Law School. Bright Sheng is a composer and conductor of classical music and a professor at the University of Michigan. He was born in Shanghai and came to the United States in 1982. He comes to us tonight from a television newsroom in Detroit. And Maxine Hong Kingston is the author of "The Woman Warrior" and "China Men," among other works. She was born in Stockton, California, and teaches English at the University of California, Berkeley. Thank you all for being with us. Nien Cheng, do you agree with what we just heard the President say, that there will be democracy in China? NIEN CHENG, Author: Yes. I think so too. I agree with what he said. I was born in 1915. I have lived through the Chinese-many Chinese regimes: The Peking government warlord era, the Nationalist government, and the Communist government, and Mao Tse Tung. I think the present leadership is the best China ever had.

Bright Sheng , born in Shanghai, China on 6 December 1955, started piano studies with his mother at the age of four. After graduating from high school during the Cultural Revolution he was one of the first students accepted by the Shanghai Conservatory of Music, where he earned his undergraduate degree in music composition. In 1982, he moved to New York, where he attended Queens College, CUNY, and Columbia University. Among his main teachers were Leonard Bernstein, Chou Wen-chung, Mario Davidovsky, George Perle, and Hugo Weisgall. Sheng has received a number of prizes in China including Chamber Music Composition and Art Song Competition. In the United States he has received awards and prizes from the National Endowment for the Arts, American Academy and Institute of Arts and Letters, the Illinois Council on the Arts, The Naumburg Foundation, The Mary Flagler Cary Charitable Trust, and the Guggenheim Foundation.

Three American Composers to Write for the Santa Fe Opera
Information on New Operas
  • Bright Sheng, 2003
  • Theodore Shapiro, 2004
  • Aaron Jay Kernis, 2006
Three outstanding American composers are writing full-scale operas for The Santa Fe Opera . The first, Madame Mao by Chinese-American Bright Sheng, is scheduled for performance in the 2003 season. Citing the company’s long standing commitment to new works, Mr. Gaddes revealed that Theodore Shapiro will undertake a major work for the 2004 season and Aaron Jay Kernis in 2006, the company’s fiftieth anniversary season. "Beginning with our very first commission in 1957 (The Tower by Marvin David Levy ), The Santa Fe Opera, under the leadership of founder John Crosby, has become widely known for its support of composers and the performance of their works," commented Mr. Gaddes. "Some of the most important names in composition received early visibility in Santa Fe Carlisle Floyd, Peter Lieberson, Tobias Picker, Hans Werner Henze, to name just a few. The presentation of new works has been a hallmark of The Santa Fe Opera, and one that we plan to continue vigorously. We hope to present works that will enter the standard repertory, as a result of their musical excellence, their compelling subjects and the artistic standards achieved in their premieres," he said. Bright Sheng, winner of a 2001 MacArthur Foundation "Genius Award," is 46. Born in China, Mr. Sheng’s life was affected by the Cultural Revolution and his music is very much an expression of his life and experiences in China. Educated at the Shanghai Conservatory of Music where he earned his undergraduate degree, Mr. Sheng came to this country in 1982. He was composer in residence at the
