Shostakovich, Dmitry (Dmitriyevich)
b. Sept. 25, 1906, St. Petersburg, Russia d. Aug. 9, 1975, Moscow Russian composer, renowned particularly for his 15 symphonies, numerous chamber works, and concerti, many of them written under the pressures of government-imposed standards of Soviet art.
Early life and works
Shostakovich was the son of an engineer. He entered the Petrograd (formerly St. Petersburg, subsequently Leningrad) Conservatory in 1919, where he studied the piano with Leonid Nikolayev until 1923 and composition until 1925 with Aleksandr Glazunov and Maksimilian Steinberg. He participated in the Chopin International Competition for Pianists in Warsaw in 1927 and received an honourable mention but made no subsequent attempt to pursue the career of a virtuoso, confining his public appearances as a pianist to performances of his own works. Even before his keyboard success in Warsaw, he had had a far greater success as a composer with the First Symphony The Nose, based upon Nikolay Gogol's story, displayed a comprehensive awareness of what was new in Western music, although already it seems as if the satire is extended to the styles themselves, for the avant-garde sounds are contorted with wry humour. Not surprisingly, Shostakovich's incomparably finer second opera, Lady Macbeth of the Mtsensk District (later retitled Katerina Izmaylova ), marked a stylistic retreat. Yet even this more accessible musical language was now too radical for the Soviet authorities.

Dmitri Shostakovich (1906 - 1975) Dmitri Shostakovich was born in St. Petersburg (now Leningrad) and died in Moscow. His entire musical career was therefore spent within Russia's Communist system, and in many ways it is clear that he had to strike a balance between his own artistic inclinations and the demands of the state. He was taught by Glazunov among others, learning piano and composition and graduating from the St. Petersburg (Petrograd) Conservatory at the age of 19 with his first symphony. This is a youthful, precocious work demonstrating his musical talents in no uncertain terms, with some similarities in approach to Prokofiev's Classical Symphony. Though this was an early success, his music didn't always enjoy the approval of the Soviet authorities. His opera "The Nose" received some criticism and "Lady Macbeth of the Mtsensk District" received oven more. In later years he was to enjoy more artistic freedom, but under Stalin composers and other artists ran the risk of their work being labelled anti-state "formalism". In some cases this could lead to "disappearances" so the threat was very real indeed. Shostakovich withdrew his 4th symphony before its premier for this reason and it wasn't performed until later under more liberal times. Some of Shostakovich's work seems to be simply paying his dues as an upright citizen but in many cases, although his music might outwardly be conforming with the party line, there is nevertheless the feeling that he is rebelling against this.

Dmitri Shostakovich By Paul Musser paul@musica.co.uk Born 25 September, 1906, St Petersburg, Russia Died 9 August, 1975, Moscow, Russia Dmitri Shostakovich is inevitably the first composer mentioned in any discussion of Soviet music. As the leading member of the Soviet Union's first generation of composers, his struggles with the ruling regime over the course of his career where both legendary and controversial. Biography A native of St Petersburg, Shostakovich was both a gifted pianist and composer. With the immense international success of this First Symphony, he chose a career as a composer. The relatively free atmosphere of the Soviet Union during the '20s allowed Shostakovich to compose more avant-garde and experimental pieces, many of which had revolutionary and political themes. Works such as his opera The Nose and his Second Symphony typify the style of this early period.

    Biography
    Dmitri Shostakovich
Composer Russia Born 25 Sep 1906
    Died 9 Aug 1975
Denounced by Stalin in 1936, Russia's greatest 20th-century composer, Dmitri Shostakovich, became a tortured soul for his remaining 40 years. Of huge intellect and emotion, he had to struggle to maintain his integrity in the face of the state's watchful eyes, while managing to express his own feelings and those of the Russian people about life under Communism.
Of Polish ancestry, Dmitri Shostakovich was born in St Petersburg in 1906. His father was a chemist and his mother a gifted musician. It was she who first taught young Dmitri the piano at which he was soon to prove an exceptional talent. He started composing when only ten. His first piece, for the piano, was called 'Soldier', and the next year he wrote an 11-year-old's reactions to the events of 1917 - the 'Funeral March in Memory of the Victims of the Revolution'. In 1919, Shostakovich was enrolled in the (newly renamed) Petrograd Conservatory. Civil War was raging in Russia, but he was able to continue his studies in composition and piano. It was three years later, when he was 16, that his first experiences of unhappiness and struggle began. His father died in 1922, Dmitri himself was found to have tuberculosis and to be in need of an operation, while his mother was dismissed from the job she had been forced to take. Potentially penniless, Dmitri was rescued by the composer-conductor Alexander Glazunov who arranged a stipend to enable him to complete his studies. Meanwhile, he took a job playing in cinemas and orchestras.
