Detailed Information about
  • Symphonies Picture Gallery List of Works Bibliography
Introduction He studied in Helsinki from 1886 with Wegelius, also gaining stimulus there from Busoni, though at the same time he fostered ambitions as a violinist. In 1889 he went to Berlin to continue his composition studies with Becker, then after a year to Vienna under Goldmark and Fuchs. He retumed to Helsinki in 1891 and immediately made a mark with his choral symphony Kullervo , though it took him another decade to establish a wholly consistent style and to emerge from the powerful influence of Tchaikovsky : important stages on the journey were marked by the Karelia The Swan of Tuonela ), the grandiose Finlandia and the first two symphonies. Kalevala , which was to be the source also for subjects of later symphonic poems) and in some degree by the folk music of Karelia. But the most important stimulus would seem to have been purely musical: a drive towards continuous growth achieved by means of steady thematic transformation and facilitated by supporting the main line very often with highly diversified ostinato textures instead of counterpoints. The singleness of purpose also has to do with the frequently modal character of Sibelius's harmony. The Violin Concerto of 1903 was effectively a farewell to 19th-century Romanticism, followed by a pure, classical expression of the new style in the Symphony no.3. This was also a period of change in his personal life. In 1904 he bought a plot of land outside Helsinki and built a house where he spent the rest of his life with his wife and daughters, removed from the city where he had been prone to bouts of heavy drinking. Also, his music gained a large international following, and he visited England (four times in 1905-12) and the USA (1914). Symphony no.4, with its conspicuous use of the tritone and its austere textures, took his music into its darkest areas; no.5 brought a return to the heroic mould, developing the process of continuous change to the extent that the first movement evolves into the scherzo.

Sibelius, Jean (1865 - 1957)
Sibelius grew to maturity at a time of fervent Finnish nationalism, as the country broke away from its earlier Swedish and later Russian overlords. Brought up in a Swedish-speaking family, Sibelius acquired a knowledge of Finnish language and traditional literature at school and the early Finnish sagas proved a strong influence on his subsequent work as a composer. After early training in Helsinki and later in Berlin, Sibelius made his career in Finland, where he was awarded a state pension. Although he lived until 1957, he wrote little after 1926, feeling out of sympathy with current trends in music. Stage Works Recommended Recordings Karelia Suite / Valse triste

I can think of few composers so closely identified with their natural environment as is Sibelius with Finland. True, Mussorgsky seems to enshrine the very soul of Russia, just as Delius evokes the world of the English garden, but no other composer brings to life so vividly the wildness and grandeur of the North as does Jean Sibelius. Of course the Finland into which he was born, was an outlying province of Tsarist Russia, and far removed from the sophisticated and prosperous nation it has since become. During his long life Sibelius became a national figure in almost the same way as was Churchill in Britain. For most people he

Ainola - the home of Jean Sibelius
Written for Virtual Finland by professor Irmeli Niemi,
Chairman of the Board the Ainola Foundation The place where Finland's greatest composer Jean Sibelius spent much of his life, the house named Ainola, after his wife Aino, is a destination of pilgrimage for music lovers in general and admirers of Sibelius in particular. The visitor to Ainola absorbs the unbroken tranquillity and gains a sense of the world in which the composer and his family lived. When he was composing there Sibelius insisted on silence; he believed that music should be heard without disturbance from extraneous noise. By the early 1900s, when Sibelius was in his thirties, he began to realise that Helsinki was not the right place for him to write music: too much of fashionable society, too much alluring but time-consuming trivia. In his own words, "In Helsinki every song within me dies." Many another artist had rekindled the flame of creativity once away from the distractions of the city.

THE BANTOCK SOCIETY was founded in 1946 under the presidency of Jean Sibelius. A Trust Fund was initially established to promote interest in the life and work of Bantock and amongst the original signatories were Bax, Boult, Boughton, Brian, Dyson, Goosens and Vaughan Williams. Beecham's famous recording of Fifine at the Fair was partly funded by the Society. Since then, the Society has endured, if somewhat intermittently, in the service of Bantock's music. October 1996 marked the 50th anniversary of GB's death and with the recent flourish of excellent recordings and the current revival of interest in the composer's music the Society continues with renewed vigour. The Society now publishes The Bantock Society Journal twice a year in the winter and summer, with two supplementary newsletters in the spring and autumn. The Journal contains articles on Bantock's life and music as well as Society news, details of concerts, letters, books and CD reviews, and acts as a forum of discussion to which members are invited to contribute. You may read an illustrative article: Granville Bantock: The Hebridean Connection by Vincent Budd . The Newsletter keeps members up to date and in touch with all aspects of Bantock-related events. The society also organises meetings, lectures and recitals of Bantock's music. All members will receive the

He studied in Helsinki, Berlin and Vienna. In 1897, the Finnish government granted him a state pension so he could devote all his time to composing. The early Finnish myths and folk tales had a strong influence on the themes he chose for his music. His last significant compositions appeared in 1925. Jean Sibelius Works
Sibelius wrote incidental music for Maeterlinck's Pellèas et Mèlisande and for Belshazzar's Feast, a play by Procope, with a Prelude and two suites from a score for Shakespeare's "The Tempest". His well known Karelia Suite was derived from incidental music for a pageant. His popular Valse triste was originally written for Jaernefelt's play Death, and in fact accompanies a death-bed scene. Sibelius wrote seven symphonies, although an eighth was destroyed for reasons unknown. The first two symphonies enjoy particular popularity.
