Home Composers Roberto Sierra updated 27 June 2000 Roberto Sierra In recent years, Roberto Sierra's colorful and rhythmic music has attracted a growing audience both in North America and Europe. Acclaimed as one of Latin America's most active contemporary composers, Sierra came to prominence in 1987 when his first major orchestral composition, premiered at Carnegie Hall with the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra. Since then, his works have been performed by the orchestras of San Francisco, Philadelphia, Baltimore, Pittsburgh, Atlanta, Houston, Dallas, Detroit, San Antonio, and Phoenix, by the American Composers Orchestra, the National Symphony Orchestra, the Kronos Quartet, Continuum, England's BBC Symphony, and at Wolf Trap, the Santa Fe Chamber Music Festival, Festival Casals, France's Festival de Lille, the Schleswig-Holstein Festival, and Germany's Neue Musik Bonn. Karel Husa Sierra's recent orchestral works can be heard on the 1994 Koss Classics CD featuring the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra and Chorus under the direction of Zdenek Macal. His music has also been recorded by New World Records, Newport Classics, New Albion, ADDA, VRAS Productions, and the Musical Heritage Society. Recent commissions include Concierto Caribe

Roberto Sierra Roberto Sierra was born in Vega Baja, Puerto Rico, in 1953. He graduated from the University of Puerto Rico in 1976, and traveled to Europe where he continued his studies in London at the Royal College of Music and at the University of London; at the Institute of Sonology in Utrecht, Holland; and with Gyorgy Ligeti at the Hamburg Hochschule fur Musik. In 1983 he became assistant and in 1985 director of the Cultural Activities Department at the University of Puerto Rico, then dean of studies and chancellor at the Puerto Rico Conservatory of Music; in 1989 he became composer-in-residence of the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra. Sierra's works include the chamber opera "El Mensajero de Plata", the ballet "El Contemplado", the orchestra piece "Jubilo", numerous chamber works, and solo pieces for piano and harpsichord. He has also written a work titled "entre terceras" for two synthesizers and computer. ROBERTO SIERRA As Prolific as Ever Roberto has written several new works: Pequeno Concierto (premiered April 13 by The San Francisco Contemporary Music Players) El Jardin de las Delicias (commissioned by The Flinn Foundation and premiered by the Phoenix Symphony Orchestra in celebration of their fiftieth anniversary) and Cuentos (premiered and commissioned by La Camerata, in Mexico). 'Cuentos' will be performed in Ithaca N.Y. at Cornell University. El Jardin was reviewed in The Arizona Republic by Kenneth LaFave calling it "impressively constructed...skillful orchestral evocation of morbid fascination." Sierra's most recent work is Rimas (inspired by the work of the 19th century Spanish poet Becquer). 'Rimas' is for violin and piano and will be performed in New York on June 27, along with Sierra's Five Aztec Poems featuring soprano Judas Kellock and pianist Philip Moll. March was a stellar month for Sierra as his Concierto Barroco received its European Premiere in Italy by the Orchestra Haydn and was performed four times by the orchestra, conducted by Karl Martin with guitar soloist Manuel Barrueco. ROBERTO SIERRA www.PRpop.org Pianista, Compositor, Arreglista y Director Lugar de nacimiento: Vega Baja, Puerto Rico El pianista, compositor, arreglista y director Roberto Sierra heredó su afición musical de su abuela. Desde niño demostró su amor por la música cuando se apropió del piano de su hermana y aprendió por sí mismo las bases del piano y solfeo con la enciclopedia "Lo sé todo". Poco después comenzó sus estudios formalmente en el Conservatorio de Música, bajo la tutela de los profesores Cecilia Talavera, Luis Antonio Ramírez y Alfredo Romero, y después en la Universidad de Puerto Rico. Luego de graduarse, este talentoso músico nacido en Vega Baja se trasladó a Europa a expandir sus conocimientos en el arte. Su "Salsa para los vientos" fue un trabajo premiado en el Budapest Spring Festival en 1983 y su "Suite" ganó el primer lugar en el Alienor Harsichord Competition. En 1987, el Almeida Festival en Londres dedicó todo un concierto a sus trabajos de música de cámara. El evento fue grabado en vivo y difundido por la cadena televisiva BBC. Precisamente ese mismo año, Sierra aumentó su notoridad cuando su primera composición orquestral, "Júbilo", fue interpretada en el Carnegie Hall por la Orquesta Sinfónica de Milwaukee .

He demonstarted a great interest in music at an early age; teaching himself to play his sister's piano. Sierra's formal training in music started at the Conservatorio de Música, in San Juan and then at the University of Puerto Rico. Following his training in Puerto Rico, Sierra went to Europe to study at the Royal College of Music, at the University of London and later the Music Institute in Utrecht. Sierra completed his advanced studies in composition at the Hochschule für Musik in Hamburg in 1982, with the internationally famous composer Gyorgy Ligeti.
