The Search for Lake Cocos by Peter Tyson October 11, 1998 "[T]hat which contributes most to the Pleasure of the Place is, that a great many Springs of clear and sweet Water rising to the top of the Hill, are there gathered as in a deep large Bason or Pond...." Lionel Wafer, surgeon of the Batchelor's Delight, on a visit to Cocos Island in the late 1600s "Some of our men, who had landed to wash and amuse themselves, found their way up the hill east of the water-course, and saw into the interior, which they described as a lake, or large sheet of water." Sir Edward Belcher, captain of the Sulphur, during a Cocos stop in 1838 Mt. Yglesias from afar. A lake on Cocos Island? No such thing today. One look at the rugged interior, as I got on my climb up Mt. Yglesias (see "Assault on Cocos" ), leaves you wondering what these writers of yore could possibly have been thinking of. It's akin to suggesting a lake high on Gibraltar. Yet there is a place in the center of the island called Los Llanos (The Plains). Could this be the bed of a former lake? I wondered. Could the island's periodic landslides have drained the lake and altered the topography sufficiently to leave no trace of it? Yesterday morning, I set out on a daylong trek across the island to seek any evidence for a lost lake. Austin Fit Heat Running Everyone knows that heat poses a danger to runners. The question is, do people have to learn the hard way, Austin runners need to be especially cautious about racing in the heat. The big difference between simply running an easy workout and running a hard 5K or 10K is the intensity. It’s the mindset and intensity that can get you into trouble in the heat. Ed Eyestone Two-time Olympian Ed Eyestone who visited Austin in April for a race clinic told a story about competing in the NCAAs in Austin in ’80. Eyestone, who lives in Utah had his heart set on becoming an All-American that year. His coach was following the weather in Austin, and they both knew that there was a major heat wave that May. To better prepare for the event, Eyestone’s coach had him train in double sweats. They hoped that would simulate the furnace of Central Texas. Eyestone tells how he entered Memorial Stadium at 4:30 in the afternoon. ‘It was like a convection oven,” he said. “They had a big thermometer set up, and it read 110 degrees. Race officials had the good sense to use a hose on the side of the track to cool down the runners as they went by. Eyestone stuck right behind a Kenyan runner from the University of El Paso, in sixth place. About haldf way trough the race, the Kenyan runner began to weave and collapsed on the side of the track. Eyestone heard two more runners coming up behind him and dug down to hold o to fifth place, which would give him All-American status.

Peabody Datelines Guitar Music of Latin America featuring the works of Roberto Sierra This is truly the "Year of the Guitar at Peabody." Peabody's own advanced guitar students and recent alumni will present a concert on January 25 that will feature the works of Roberto Sierra and other Latin American composers Leo Brouwer, Alberto Ginastera, Radames Gnatalli, and Agustin Barrios Mangore. The concert has been put together by Guitar Department chairman Ray Chester who welcomes the opportunity to program various combinations of his favorite instrument from guitar solos, duos and quartets to guitar with flute or cello, and with string orchestra. Guitarist Risa Carlson will be joined by Alison Potter, flute, in Sierra's Crónica del Descubrimiento (1987) and Tercera Crónica del Descubrimiento. Berta Rojas is guitar soloist for the composer's Toccata Y Lamento, composed in 1992 in memory of Villa Lobos, and the program will conclude with Sierra's Fantasia Corelliana , written as recently as 1999 for guitar and string orchestra, with Berta Rojas and Paul Moeller as guitar soloists.

Gifted with a moderate climate, afflicted occasionally by hurricanes, not cursed by frosts, blessed by an ample and well distributed rainfall and excellent soils for tropical crops, it has traditionally been the largest exporter of cane sugar in the world. The population is estimated in 12 million. About a quarter of Cuba is fairly mountainous. To the W of Habana is the narrow Sierra de los Órganos, rising to 750 meters and containing, in the extreme W, the strange scenery of the Guaniguánicos hill country. S of these Sierras, in a strip 145 km Iong and 16 km wide along the piedmont, is the Vuelta Abajo area which grows the finest of all Cuban tobaccos. Towards the center of the island are the Trinidad mountains, rising to 1.100 meters, and in the E, encircling the port of Santiago, are the most rugged mountains of all, the Sierra Maestra, in which Pico Turquino reaches 1.980 meters. In the rough and stony headland E of Guantanamo Bay are copper, manganese, chromium and iron mines. About a quarter of the land surface is covered with mountain forests of pine and mahogany. The coastline, with a remarkable number of fine ports and anchorage, is about 3,540 km Iong.
