John Philip Sousa
John Philip Sousa was born on November 6, 1854. He was third oldest of ten children. The family lived in Washington, D.C., where his father played trombone in the United States Marine Band . As a child, John was surrounded by music, especially military band music.
H.M.S. Pinafore. There he met Jane van Middlesworth Bellis. John and Jane were married on December 30, 1879.
After twelve successful years of conducting the Marine Band, Sousa decided to start his own band. In 1892, he left the Marine Band for the second time and started his own band called "Sousa’s Band." Sousa hired the best band musicians he could find, and the band traveled all over the United States and Europe. Many of the vocal soloists Sousa featured in his band’s performances were women. One of the most famous was Estelle Liebling, a virtuoso soprano. In 1910, Sousa and his band went on a world tour.
When the United States entered World War I in 1917, Sousa, at age 62 agreed to lead their band. When the war was over, John went back to his own band. He kept writing marches and worked with young people in school bands too.
In early March of 1932, Sousa conducted the Ringgold Band in Reading, Pennsylvania. He died of a heart attack there on March 6. The last piece he conducted was

John Philip Sousa Born 6 November 1854, Washington, D.C.
Died 6 March 1932, Reading, PA. Just as Johann Strauss, Jr., is known everywhere as "The Waltz King," John Philip Sousa is "The March King." The child of immigrant parents, he began his career in the United States Marine Band (1868-75), then played professionally in theater orchestras. For the Marine Band, which he was called to direct in 1880, he composed the majority of his most memorable marches. On retiring that position in 1892, he organized his own band and led it on tours throughout the world (Chicago World's Fair, 1894; Paris Exposition of 1900; world tour 1910-11). His march The Gladiator was for a time the best-selling publication in the history of American music; Stars and Stripes Forever became the official march of the United States by a 1987 act of Congress. Sousa was also a decent composer of operettas. In his 60s, ever a patriot, he responded to World War I by enlisting as a lieutenant in the Naval Reserve. The stand-inside-the-coils tuba called the Sousaphone was built following his design and is now used by marching bands everywhere. And the Sousa march, with its two strains, trio, and "dogfight" became as influential a national genre as jazz. Works Marches (c. 120)

John Philip Sousa, renowned throughout the world for his martial band music, was the first president of an organization which was a forerunner to the present Amateur Trapshooting Association. In 1916 Sousa headed the newly-founded American Amateur Trapshooting Association . His goal was to "band together the amateur shooters with bonds of common fellowship" with a certainty that "trapshooting will be advanced through the united efforts of the amateurs." The AATA was the first positive step in developing an association for, and administered by, amateurs. Sousa might well be called the father of government of the sport by amateur shooters as it exists today. In 1917 Sousa was chairman of the National Association of Shotgun Owners. He served the AATA again as president in 1918, until it was disbanded in 1919 and absorbed by the American Trapshooting Association. The new association continued with the same goals that Sousa and his group had espoused. In 1920 he became a delegate from New York State to the new association and assisted on handicapping committees at major tournaments. Sousa began shooting trap seriously in 1906. From that time forward he was dedicated to the sport and served it in any capacity his busy professional life as a musician and composer would allow.

JOHN PHILIP SOUSA Bandleader / Composer "March King" John Philip Sousa was the most famous band leader in the United States during his lifetime, a former U. S. Marine Band leader who composed and conducted some of the most well-known marches in the world. His professional career began as a violinist in travelling orchestras, but his first fame came as the leader of the U. S. Marine Band from 1880 until 1892. Sousa composed the official song of the Marine Corps, "Semper Fidelis" at the request of President Chester A. Arthur (who was looking for a song to replace "Hail to the Chief," or so the story goes). In 1892 he started a civilian band that became internationally famous and hugely popular (in 1910 they toured the world). The band was known especially for marches that Sousa composed, notably "Stars and Stripes Forever," designated in 1987 as the National March of the United States.
Extra credit : Sousa also wrote operas and other pieces of music, as well as novels and poetry... In 1917 he enlisted in the U. S. Naval Reserve (at the age of 62) because of World War I. John Philip Sousa

John Philip Sousa
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. John Philip Sousa November 6 March 6 ), is probably the most famous marching band conductor and composer in history. He wrote well over 100 marches, including The Stars and Stripes Forever The Liberty Bell (best known as the theme song for Monty Python's Flying Circus ), and The Washington Post . The marching tuba, or sousaphone , is named after him. Sousa's musical education began when he was seven years old. At the age of 13, he was enrolled as an apprentice with Marine Band. He left it after several years to join a theatrical band. He soon began conducting, and returned to the Marine Band as its head in 1880. Sousa organized his own band in 1892. It toured widely, and in 1900 represented the United States at the Paris Exposition before touring Europe. Sousa repeatedly refused to conduct on the radio, fearing the lack of personal contact with the audience; he was persuaded to do so in 1929, and was very successful.

JOHN PHILIP SOUSA
John Philip Sousa was born in 1854 in Washington D.C. His father was in the United States Marine Band. When Sousa was five years old his mother refused to give him any more doughnuts, so he sat out in the rain for a half an hour because he was mad. Then his mother finally brought him in. Sousa became very sick. He was sick for two whole years. When Sousa was seven, he went to school for the first time. He also went to music school. Over a few years he had learned the violin, trombone, and cornet. When he was eleven years old, he started playing in a dance band, and all the other players were adults. When Sousa was thirteen he wanted to run away with the circus to play in the circus band, but his father discovered his secret. So, he made Sousa sign up for the Marine Band the day he was planning to run away. When Sousa was twenty years old, he left the United States Marine Band. He then became interested in a woman named Emma. When Sousa asked her father if he could marry her, he denied him because musicians do not make very much money. So, he said he would go out to earn money for two years, and return with a larger savings. When Sousa returned, he saw that Emma was dating someone else. In 1879, Sousa became the head of a performing music group. A young girl named Jenny sang in this group. They became fond of each other, and on December 30, 1879 they were married. They had three children, John Philip Jr., Jane, and Helen.

Stars and Stripes Forever, Ballet Suite A lesser-known recording, but a must-have for any lover of band music. This is a ballet suite based on the music of John Philip Sousa, set by Hershey Kay (famous for his orchestrations of Leonard Bernstein's music, AKA Hershy Kay). Played by the Boston Pops Orchestra under the direction of Arthur Fiedler. There are some very nice settings of familiar tunes, including Washington Post march, Semper Fidelis march, and Stars and Stripes Forever (national march of the United States of America). Euphonium players will be interested to note that the normal orchestral instrumentation was augmented to include euphonium, played by the legendary John Swallow (featured on several melodies, coutermelodies, and a cadenza). This CD also features Hershey Kay's Cake Walk Suite. Click here to go to Amazon's FULL listing for Stars and Stripes... Stars and Stripes Forever, Video on VHS This entertaining video stars Clifton Webb, Debra Paget, and Robert Wagner. There is some very fine playing by the band, comprised of many original Sousa band members.
"In the 1890s, Sgt. Major John Philip Sousa, leader of the Marine Corps Band, meets Private Willie Little, inventor of an instrument he calls the Sousaphone... and Little's girlfriend, shapely showgirl Lily. To support his growing family, Sousa leaves the Marines and forms his own band; Willie and Lily go along. Though he'd rather write ballads, Sousa's marches bring him increasing fame; from their debut in 1892 the band is a great success. But Sousa's 'no wives' rule threatens the romance of Willie and Lily...as does the Spanish-American War."
