Summary for the Busy Executive : Interesting and attractive. Sowerby had a prominent and successful career. If you were to ask a classical-loving Midwesterner of a certain age to name an American composer, hearing Sowerby's name wouldn't surprise you. But his work hasn't really lasted, although it's all very well made. One can find many reasons for the neglect (more later). Although he wrote in many genres, it's his organ music that has mostly stuck. Even in my little Ohio town, the local Protestant church organists regularly played Sowerby (and Healy Willan). Classic Concerto for organ and strings. It begins with open-fifth harmonies and aggressive rhythms, much like the openings to the Hindemith organ sonatas, but the lyric subject reveals Sowerby's artistic heart firmly beating with the French Wagneristes and Franckians of the previous century, one possible reason why it leaves me a bit cold. Franck and his school in general fail to move me. In a way, Sowerby's music resembles Howard Hanson's. But Hanson, unlike Sowerby, has an individual, instantly recognizable voice. I would find a comparison of the Hanson organ concerto to this Sowerby one very instructive. In broad outline, both concerti show similar habits of structural thinking, the same kinds of harmonies, and the same Romantic traditionalism. But the Hanson, for me, bleaches out the Sowerby, despite many fine moments in the latter.

Leo Sowerby (1895-1968) is an all but forgotten American composer who was overshadowed by his contemporaries, Copland, Hanson, Harris, Barber and others. Yet, his career began with a meteoric rise: when he was only twenty-one the Chicago Symphony Orchestra devoted an entire concert to his music! Works on the program included the unlikely duo of his Cello Concerto and The Irish Washerwoman. From the Northland is subtitled "Impressions of the Lake Superior Country" and has four titled sections: Forest Voices, Cascades, Burnt Rock Pool , and T he Shining Big-Sea Water . Each is quite atmospheric and imaginatively orchestrated, and the succession of movements presents one effective contrast after another. Cascades , for example, is colorful and lively, gossamer and delicate in its subtle instrumentation and playfully mysterious mood, creating quite a different sound world from that of the glacially-paced and autumnal Forest Voices . Speaking of things supposedly autumnal, the opening work

Home July 1997 Catalogue August 1997 Catalogue September 1997 Catalogue ... June 1999 Catalogue Leo Sowerby symphony No. 2 orchestral works JOLY BRAGA SANTOS - A new symphony cycle on Marco Polo MORTON GOULD (1913-1996): Quickstep from Symphony on Marching Tunes, Cotillion from Fall River Legend, Philharmonic Waltzes, Latin American Symphonette, Festive Music, Fanfare for Freedom, Windjammer (Main Title), ALBERTO GINASTERA (1916-1983): Estancia - Suite. This is probably the most spectacular digital recording we've ever heard, both for imaging, clarity and dynamic range. It's astonishing that it was made in 1978, using the "Soundstream" system which lost out to other, large-corporately-financed systems. The repertoire is (strangely) still under-represented in the catalogue but, in recordings like these, it wouldn't matter if there were dozens of versions available! London Symphony Orchestra; Morton Gould. Citadel CTD 88130 (U.S.A.) GORDON JACOB (1895-1984): Mini Concerto for Clarinet and Strings, Concertino for Clarinet and Strings (after Tartini), Clarinet Quintet, Clarinet Trio. Resolutely tonal and Romantic in style, these pieces, even the apparently ludicrously brief Mini Concerto, display a depth of feeling that is all too often lacking in 20th-century music. There is more than a hint of English pastoral throughout, but the music never sounds like the more familiar composers associated with that phrase, except fleetingly and superficially, and there is much beauty to savor here. Warmly recommended. Charles Russo (clarinet), Premier Chamber Orchestra; David Gilbert. Premier PRCD 1052 (U.S.A.)
