Spohr, Louis (1784 - 1859) The name of Louis Spohr remains well known to violinists, brought up to play some at least of his fifteen violin concertos. He was born in Brunswick in 1784 and established himself as a leading virtuoso violinist and as a composer. As a conductor he made use of a baton, a practice unusual at the time and one that alarmed orchestral players in London, who anticipated aggressive intentions. From 1822 until his death in 1859 he was director of music at Kassel, a position initially offered him on the suggestion of Weber. His compositions include a number of works with violin and harp, written for himself and his wife, the harpist Dorette Scheidler. Orchestral Music Symphonies Spohr completed nine symphonies, leaving a tenth unfinished. The later symphonies move from the classical style that he had inherited to music with a programmatic element. They remain relative rarities in the concert-hall today. Concertos Spohr wrote fifteen violin concertos, the first completed in 1803 and the last in 1844. The best known of these is probably the eighth, which incorporates an operatic element. Other concertos include two double violin concertos and four concertos for clarinet. The latter are an important and popular part of solo clarinet repertoire and were written for the clarinettist Johann Simon Hermstedt. Recommended Recordings Naxos 8.550688

May he stand with our greatest Germans as a shining example." -Robert Schumann, on Louis Spohr For a man who was once one of Europe's most popular composers, one of the greatest violin virtuosi of his time, inventor of the violin chin-rest and the first major conductor to ultize the baton, the name Louis Spohr now remains unknown to most general audiences, a scheduling of his works being a concert rarity not often witnessed. A devotee of classicism and his idol Mozart, yet at the same time a major promoter of new music by composers such as Wagner and Liszt, the great popularity that once held Spohr's music in acclaim slowly faded, and by the end of the second World War the last of his greatest concert and stage works had dissapeared into the depths of obscurity. Seinen ersten Geigenunterricht erhielt er von seinem Vater, der Arzt im kleinen Örtchen Seesen war. Erst mit dreizehn ging er auf die Katharinenschule, erhielt aber nur wenig Theorieunterricht. Dennoch geriet der am 5. April 1784 geborene Musiker nach nur drei Jahren in die Gunst des Herzogs Karl Wilhelm Ferdinand von Braunschweig und bekam die Möglichkeit, in dessen Hofkapelle zu wirken und alsbald den Virtuosen Franz Eck auf dessen Konzertreise nach Petersburg zu begleiten. Bereits seine ersten Kompositionen und die folgende eigene Konzertreise von 1804/05 begründeten einen sensationellen Ruf als 'größten Lyriker der Geige' (A. Moser). Seine Anstellung als Konzertmeister der Gothaer Hofkapelle ließ ihm die Freiräume, um auf verschiedensten musikalischen Gebieten schöpferisch tätig zu werden. So entstand in dieser Zeit nicht nur Der Zweikampf mit der Geliebten - seine erste Oper - die auf die Bühne gelangte, sondern auch Werke für Harfe und Klarinette sowie Oratorien.
