Seite: 1 Louis Spohr 1784 - 1859 Louis Spohr: Doppelkonzerte Die Concertanten, Kompositionen für zwei konzertierende Soloinstrumente und Orchester ohne feste Bindung an die herkömmliche Konzertform, stehen im Schaffen Spohrs als wichtige und interessante Gattung konzertanter Musik neben den fünfzehn Violinkonzerten, den vier für den aus Langensalza stammenden Klarinettisten Johann Simon Hermstedt geschriebenen Klarinettenkonzerten und dem Konzert für Streichquartett und Orchester. Nachweisbar sind: zwei für zwei Violinen (A-Dur op. 48, h-Moll op. 88), zwei für Violine und Harfe (G-Dur W.o.O.). Die Concertante für zwei Violinen und Orchester A-Dur , die wie die anderen Werke dieser CD erstmals veröffentlicht wird, entstand im Jahre 1808, also in der für die Profilierung des Komponisten Spohr so bedeutsamen Gothaer Zeit. In formal-architektonischer Hinsicht folgt sie mit dem kunstvollen Eingangs-Allegro, dem empfindsamen langsamen Mittelsatz (Larghetto) und dem lebensvollen Rondo-Finale (Allegretto) dem Vorbild des dreisätzigen Solokonzertes. Erwähnenswert ist die ungewöhnliche, aber überaus reizvolle Besetzung des zweiten Satzes: der innige Gesang der Soloinstrumente wird lediglich von den tiefen Streichern (Violoncello 1 bis 3, Kontrabässe) und zeitweilig einem Horn begleitet.

Spohr's opera makes use of the Faust legend rather than Goethe's extended treatment of it, his hero seeking to use his power for good as much as for selfish purposes. The work ends in his punishment, as Mephistofeles drags him down to Hell. The opera occupies a place of some importance in the development of German romantic opera. The overture is intended to represent the conflict Faust feels, weaving together a number of motifs associated with ideas in the opera.

Their genesis was superbly pragmatic. Johann Tost, formerly a violinist, for whom Haydn had written his Quartets Opp 54, 55 and 64 and Mozart his K593 and K614, had now retired and set up as a businessman. He asked Spohr to compose chamber music, thirty ducats for a quartet, thirty-five for a quintet, with Tost to retain the manuscript and to be performed only with Tost in attendance. After three years the manuscript would be returned to Spohr who was then free to get it published. This clandestine, labyrinthine arrangement was devised solely in order for the wily Tost to attend important salons where the works were performed and he could drum up trade for his cloth business. The Op 33 Quintets were printed in the wrong order and No 2 was actually written first shortly after Spohr had finished his ever-delightful Nonet and it is a work of signal accomplishment. Clearly it is Mozartian in impulse, with four-movements lasting fully thirty-seven minutes. The first violin part is reminiscent of the
