XIIA: The Mannheim School The Mannheim School flourished principally during the reign (1743-78) of the Elector Palatine Karl Theodor. During the second half of the 18th century Mannheim, as residence of Karl Theodor, was one of the most flourishing seats of the arts and sciences. The principal German centers of symphonic composition from 1740 onward were Mannheim, Vienna, and Berlin. The founder of the Mannheim school was the Bohemian musician Johann Stamitz , who was active there from 1741 on; under his leadership the Mannheim orchestra became renowned all over Europe for its virtuosity (Burney called it "an army of generals"), for its hitherto unknown dynamic range from the softest pianissimo to the loudest fortissimo, and for the thrilling sound of its crescendo. The growing use of crescendo and diminuendo around the middle of the century was one symptom of a trend toward attaining variety within a movement by means of gradual transitions; Baroque movements had either kept to a uniform dynamic level or else introduced distinct contrasts, as in the concerto. Die Primadonna Bratsche Violakonzerte mit Vidor Nagy und dem Kurpfälzischen Kammerorchester Die Partitur zu dem Konzert für Viola und Streichorchester in G-Dur von Johann Stamitz, das diese Koproduktion mit dem SWR eröffnet, wurde vor einiger Zeit in Bayerns ehemaligem Zisterzienserkloster Ebrach aufgestöbert. Um einen sensationellen Fund handelte es sich nicht, denn die Komposition war bereits in einer Version für Querflöte bekannt. Aber als Bereicherung für das Viola-Repertoire darf man sie gut und gerne bezeichnen; dem kräftigen, vermutlich böhmischen Tanzrhythmus, mit dem der erste Satz beginnt, ist der füllige, warme Ton des Streichinstruments zweifellos eher angemessen, als der schlanke Klang der Flöte. Vidor Nagy, der Erste Solobratscher des Württembergischen Staatsorchesters in Stuttgart, gönnt sich eine Programmfolge, die vergnügliche Musizierwonnen ebenso einschließt wie spieltechnische Herausforderungen. Und das Kurpfälzische Kammerorchester unter der Leitung von Jiri Malat trägt natürlich als Partner, der mit der Familie Stamitz engstens vertraut ist, seinen inspirierenden Teil zu Vater Johanns vorklassischem Beispiel aus der Mannheimer Schule bei. Wie nachhaltig sie Sohn Anton beeinflusste, ist an seinem gefälligen Viola-Konzert in B-Dur abzulesen, das den Solisten mit dem Orchester lebhaft kommunizieren lässt. Dagegen billigt der Österreicher Johannes Matthias Sperger dem Orchester in seinem D-Dur-Konzert nur untergeordnete Aufgaben zu, während die Viola alle Möglichkeiten bekommt, sich als virtuose Primadonna zu profilieren. Vidor Nagy erweist sich hier als wahrer Saiten-Artist, der die teuflich schweren Griffe, die Kletterpartien in die höchsten Höhen und die abgrundtiefen Stürze bravourös beherrscht.

Its forte like thunder, its crescendo a cataract, its diminuendo a crystal stream disappearing into the distance, its piano a breath of spring The wind lift, fill out and animate the storm of the strings”. The quote is not very musically exacting, but from this we can see manifest the great list of innovations that musicologists highlight: the discarding of figured bass and continuo; the use of instrumental dynamics; the bolder dichotomy between piano and forte; the avoidance of the conventional and pedantic; and a flair for the unexpected thus trapping the ear of the audience and holding their attention. Indeed one can see, the budding of the symphonic style of Beethoven in Stamitz – but there was still a long way to go! Stamitz died young (though not quite as young as Mozart) at the age of 39 in Mannheim, which had become his home and inspiration. He left two sons who were to become composers in their own right. What exactly did Stamitz do for the symphony? Well, the best way to highlight his contribution is to listen to his music in conjunction with the analysis following further below. In a nutshell, however, he adopted the four-movement form, established the Minuet and Trio, began to expand the binary elements of the first movement into contrasted thematic material of the exposition in sonata form, and gave his instruments more freedom than previously practised. The abandoning of the continuo helped shape the nature of French Horn contribution to orchestral texture, and much more. A lot of his innovations become more apparent with a study of the music of his direct descendents (not only his sons but also Haydn, Dittersdorf [1739-99] and others). It is worth the student reading more about Dittersdorf as he contributed not only as composer but also as teacher to some of the upcoming composers of the new age.

Uitgaande van Italiaanse meesters als Tartini en Sammartini, heeft Stamitz door het ontwikkelen van de sonatevorm het klassieke tijdperk beslissend voorbereid.
