Sir Charles Villiers Stanford
Born and raised in Dublin, Stanford was the only son of a prosperous Protestant lawyer. His genius for classical musical forms gained him admission to Cambridge University at the age of 18 where he quickly established a commanding reputation, and was appointed organist of Trinity College while still an undergraduate. Afterward he went to Germany to study composition with Carl Reinecke in Leipzig, and later with Friedrich Kiel in Berlin. He went on to compose in almost every music form including seven symphonies; ten operas; fifteen concertante works; chamber, piano, and organ pieces; and over thirty large-scale choral works. His voluminous sacred music continues to be the foundation of the Anglican tradition. Stanford has often been dismissed in this century ass a German imitator; an unoriginal fabricator of "Brahmsian" music. However, anything more than a cursory investigation of his music reveals his Celtic roots, as well as his intense individuality. This combining of German and Celtic traditions to create an integrated idiom was instrumental in establishing an English style upon which the next generation of British composer could build. In his article on Stanford for the New Grove, Frederick Hudson writes, "Stanford's name is linked with those of Parry , Parratt, and Elgar in referring to the late 19th century renaissance in English music. It is arguable that Stanford made the greatest contribution to this renaissance, and that the labels of "Victorian" and "Edwardian" apply less to his music than to that of the others."

An important concerto since no other late romantic work is in the repertoire. First two movements are for Bb Clarinet while the last movement is for the A Clarinet. While the work is highly influenced by Brahms, the Concerto is more original. Publisher J. B. Cramer

(BBC Music Magazine **** star review) "This successful and enterprising release is strongly recommended" (International Record Review) "..a very successful release of some highly attractive music." (Fanfare) Two major world premieres of first-rate Stanford chamber works comprise The Pirasti Trio's companion disc to their earlier success. Following on from their highly successful recording debut ( CD DCA 925 ), a programme of British piano trios that included Stanford's Second, the young English ensemble, The Pirasti Trio now presents an all-Stanford recital of two world premieres of major chamber works. Irishman Charles Villiers Stanford (1852-1924) was the pre-eminent British composer immediately prior to Elgar. His music is enjoying a strong revival; in particular his rich legacy of chamber music is being recognised: a nonet, three quintets, ten quartets, three trios, six sonatas plus many other fine pieces (listen to the Cello Sonata No.2 from Julian Lloyd Webber on

SIR CHARLES VILLIERS STANFORD
The choir celebrated the 150th anniversary of this composer's birth with a performance of his Magnificat and Nunc Dimittis in C at Evensong on October 20th. Charles Villiers Stanford was born in Dublin on the 30th September 1852, the son of a prosperous lawyer from whom he inherited a combative streak which stood up to bullies, and affected his attitude to authority throughout his working life. His musical talent became apparent when he composed a march at the age of eight. Several years later he replaced an organist at the last minute, playing the whole of Bach's St. Anne Prelude and Fugue from memory. Meanwhile he went to a private school in Dublin learning classics, which he went on to study at Queen's College Cambridge in 1870. Freed from strict paternal control, he immersed himself in the musical life of the university, conducting choirs and giving new energy to the Cambridge University Music Society. He was also appointed organ scholar of Trinity College. After finishing his degree, he was granted leave of absence by the Trinity authorities to study composition in Germany. In 1883, he became a professor of composition and conductor at the newly-founded Royal College of Music and, in 1887, Professor of Music at Cambridge. Although he was loved and revered as a teacher, his manner could be domineering and his methods demanding. Crestfallen pupils who had lavished hours on their scores would be told in Stanford's strong Irish brogue, "Burn it, me boy." He was fond of a joke - "a good sell." One day he announced that the orchestra would be rehearsing Strauss. Eager students anticipated playing the adventurous tone poems of Richard Strauss. What they got was the Blue Danube! Many of the well-known composers of the twentieth century, including Vaughan Williams, Frank Bridge, Herbert Howells and Percy Grainger, studied with Stanford. None of them seem to bear the mark of his influence, except in meticulous craftsmanship. They were encouraged to cultivate their own style.

Sir Charles Hubert Hastings Parry
Best known for a single work, the choral song Jerusalem , this forgotten English Romantic who was instrumental in bringing about the English musical renaissance at the end of the nineteenth century, and who, for the first time since Purcell , brought a distinctively English quality to western music. The brief entry devoted to Parry in Baker's Concise Dictionary of Musicians concentrates solely on the social impact of Parry as an academic colleague of Sir Charles Villiers Stanford and a teacher of the likes of Ralph Vaughan Williams . No mention is made of any of his compositions or the effects these works may have had on the development of the English school in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Parry is a Romantic composer who managed to balance an affinity for both Brahms and Wagner in a time when there were few composers or other cognoscenti willing to admit being influenced by both. Parry's early musical career at Eton and Oxford was fairly undistinguished, with a concentration of small-scale works such as songs, anthems and piano music in a Mendelssohnian vein. It was only after he began studies with the famous pedagogue Edward Danreuther in London in 1873 that his individual style came to the fore. Danreuther was a renown pianist who, after studying with Moscheles and Hauptmann in Leipzig, returned to England to introduce the concertos of Chopin, Schumann, Grieg and Liszt. He combined these activities with instilling a veneration of the classics in his students and a keen personal interest in the newest music of Wagner and Brahms. Parry's exposure to this environment was as a consequence instrumental in charting a course for his own musical interests.
