Sir Charles Stanford
SIR CHARLES VILLIERS STANFORD

(1852 - 1924) composer and music teacher
Born 30 th Sep 1852, 2 Herbert Street, Dublin Educated at Bassett’s School, Dublin, and Queen’s College, Cambridge, where he went as a choral scholar in 1870. After further study at Leipzig and Berlin he won distinction as a composer, his music to the Eumenides of Aeschylus taking Cambridge by storm. Exceptionally versatile and prolific, he wrote operas, large-scale choral works, symphonies, chamber music, church music, and solo songs. His six Irish Rhapsodies drew largely on native melodies and have retained their popularity as the best of his orchestral works. His settings for Irish poems were published in several collections with great success; An Irish Idyll Cushendall (1910) and Songs from Leinster (1914) contain some of his best work. He also edited the Petrie Collection of Irish Music He was appointed professor of composition and orchestral playing at the Royal College of Music in 1883 and professor of music at Cambridge in 1887, and held both posts until his death. He was a gifted teacher, and many of his pupils later became distinguished musicians; Walford Davies, Ralph Vaughan Williams, Gustav Holst, Eugene Goossens and Arthur Bliss studied under him. He was knighted in 1901. In 1911 he published Musical Composition , an exposition of his methods, and in 1914 Pages from an Unwritten Diary Died in London, 29 March 1924; his ashes are buried in Westminster Abbey.

Sir Charles Villiers Stanford
by Brian Moore CHARLES VILLIERS STANFORD was born 150 years ago, during the year the Duke of Wellington died, Queen Victoria was in the fifteenth year of her long reign, there was no internal combustion engine, hence no cars or aeroplanes, and no wireless or telephone. By the time he died, in 1924, all these things were well established and part of our lives. He came from a Dublin family where he was born on 30th September 1852, the only child of John James Stanford and his second wife Mary. On a visit to Dublin in September 2000, to attend a gathering of the Friends of Cathedral Music, my wife Jean and I went to St. Michan's Church and in the vaults we saw the burial chamber belonging to the Stanford family, although after his death, in London, on 29th March 1924, Charles was buried in Westminster Abbey next to Purcell. His father was one of Dublin's most eminent lawyers and was a keen amateur singer and cellist. Their home at 2 Herbert Street was filled with music and was occasionally visited by famous musicians such as the violinist Joachim. Charles himself soon showed early musical gifts, his first composition being a march written at the age of eight. This was soon performed at a pantomime at the Dublin Theatre Royal.

All Angels Cry Aloud! ...including the debut of an original piece as a 150th birthday tribute to Sir Charles Villiers Stanford by choral director Allen Combs. The other choral music included Vaughan Williams: Five Mystical Songs plus anthems and hymns by Stanford, Parry, Noble, Harwood, Bainton and Howells. May 2002 Almost uniquely among Western religions, the Anglican Church has fostered a musical tradition which has flourished from the Medieval period to the present day. The composers and organists associated with the great English cathedrals have left to us a bounty of (mostly) top-drawer music – settings of the ordinary of the Mass, service music, hymns for congregational singing, and choral anthems – which can easily function as concert music outside of their normal milieu. In paying tribute to this tradition, we have decided to focus on the late-nineteenth and early twentieth centuries in presenting a representative slice of its history. In so doing, we are also able to pay homage to the great Irish composer Sir Charles Villiers Stanford, who contributed so much fine music to the church as well as to the concert hall; the 150th anniversary of Stanford’s birth will be observed on September 30 of this year, and we join with many other choral groups in saluting his achievements. Sir Charles Villiers Stanford (1852-1924) exhibited a prodigious musical talent as a boy, and became a choral scholar at Queen’s College, Cambridge. By the early age of twenty-one he had been appointed organist at Trinity College and was the conductor of two choral societies. During his college years he also studied in Germany with Reinecke and Kiel. His fame steadily increased, and in 1883 upon the opening of the Royal College of Music he was made professor of composition; in 1887 the same position at Cambridge was added to his duties, and he held both professorships until his death. His influence on the upcoming generation through his teaching was vast, his pupils numbering most of the great English composers of the twentieth century, including four (Vaughan Williams, Howells, Noble and Bainton) from the second half of this program.

Irish composer (Sir) Charles Stanford has all but faded from public attention. Overlapping with both Elgar and the younger generation, he was first outshone by the former, and then by Bliss, Holst and Vaughan Williams (all of whom were his students). It did not help that he studied in Germany: his works were vilefied as being in the German academic tradition. Links

Music Manuscripts Cataloguing Project at the University Library and Fitzwilliam Museum
Fitzwilliam Virginal Book. Courtesy of the Fitzwilliam Museum The collections of music manuscripts at the Fitzwilliam Museum and University Library are of international importance and contain a wealth of material relating to all periods of music history. The music manuscripts at the Fitzwilliam Museum are particularly outstanding and the collection has at its core that of the Museum's founder, Richard 7th Viscount Fitzwilliam, an avid collector of music manuscripts and early printed music. The Museum's collection includes the Metz Pontifical and a large collection of illuminated manuscripts. The Fitzwilliam Virginal Book (ca. 1625) contains one of the finest collections of late-fifteenth and early sixteenth century English keyboard music while Lord Cherbury's lute book is an important source of English and French lute music. Of particular interest to musicologists is the collection of Handel autograph manuscripts, many of which correlate with manuscripts housed in the British Library. The Handel autograph manuscripts are complemented by a large collection of copies in the hand of various amanuenses, the majority of which form the Barrett Leonard collection housed in the famous 'Handel bookcase'.

MUSIC AT GOOD SHEPHERD Dr. William J. Gatens, Organist-Choirmaster At the Church of the Good Shepherd, we strive to maintain a standard of musical worship appropriate to the "beauty of holiness" that is so much a part of our Anglo-Catholic tradition. Choral music is drawn mainly from the English cathedral repertory along with Latin church music and works from other traditions customarily adopted for Anglican use. The Parish Choir consists mostly of volunteers with professional section leaders on each of the principal parts. Anyone interested in joining the Parish Choir is encouraged to contact the Organist-Choirmaster.

St Mary Abbots - A Rich Musical Tradition
Singing in the choir during Parry and Stanford’s time was a boy by the name of Henry Curtis. When his voice broke he moved to the back row as a Bass. He continued in the choir until his death in 1965, unbroken service of 80 years. He is commemorated by an inscription on the choir stalls. During his lifetime he contributed generously to the cost of sheet music and left a bequest in trust which still defrays some of the running costs of the church’s music. The concerts, referred to above, given by students from the Royal College of Music, were conceived some years ago by one of the Churchwardens, Dick Madge. They provide a most important opportunity for students to hone their performance skills in both solo and chamber music. While the students are on Easter and Summer holidays, concerts continue in a platform for young artists organised by Denny Lyster. In many of these concerts, solo organ music has been an important constituent. Our Director of Music, Professor Mark Uglow writes: “St Mary Abbots has a challenging and growing musical schedule. At the heart of a thriving
