Stanley Weyman
Profile
Stanley John Weyman was born at 54 Broad Street, Ludlow , Shropshire, the son of a solicitor and educated at Ludlow Grammar School, Shrewsbury School and Christ Church College, Oxford. He began writing in a minor way while at Oxford, where he read history, and increased his output in the following years with articles for The Cornhill magazine . He in fact spent ten years as a barrister before turning to a literary career full time, due largely to the influence of the magazine's editor. Weyman travelled abroad and his experiences and observations provided him with much of the background for the historical stories and romances for which he became well known. On one occasion he was arrested under suspicion of being a spy in the south of France and was only released after the intervention of the British Ambassador. His novels include Memoirs of a minister of France The red cockade The long night The wild geese (1908) as well as many short stories.

Stanley John University : Country: Title: Devolution in the Protestant Missionary Enterprise in China: A Case Study of the Educational Work in the Weixian Station, 1900-1920 Panel: Modern History In the past, studies on Protestant missionaries and their methods have been made by Irwin Hyatt, Valentin Rabe, Jessie G. Lutz, and others. More recently, works by Yuet-wah Cheung, Kathleen Lodwick, Lawrence Kessler, and Gael Graham have delved into the relationship between the missionaries and social change in China. Scholars in Shandong are currently working on research related to the Shandong Christian University, the official local histories devote much space to the work of the missionaries, and finally local schools founded by missionaries sometimes promote themselves through their history. In considering the work of the Protestant missionaries in China many of the above studies concentrate on the missionary involvement. However, the missionaries were not the only driving force behind the work to establish Christianity in China. While it is true that the missionaries held much of the control, the Chinese Christians played a major role in the administration of the country work. These included itinerating doctors, heads of country schools, itinerating school superintendents, and local preachers. However, the devolution of administrative power to the Chinese did not occur simultaneously within every group. One of the stated failures of the missionary movement was this lack of devolution of administrative control. It has been found that one of the most successful stations in this respect was that of the American Presbyterians located in Weixian, Shandong. The missionaries stationed there pushed for the involvement of the Chinese in its educational and evangelical work, and devolved power to them almost immediately. The station at Weixian had succeeded where others did not. We want to look at the strategies used by the station staff to make the achievements in the devolution of control and where it failed to do so between 1900 and 1920. We not only want to focus on the Chinese administrators within the mission context, but also their roles in the promotion of education in the area outside the missionary establishment.

    58. John Stanley - Biographical Summary
Chronological biography and discography with illustrations.
    http://www.rslade.btinternet.co.uk/stanley/
18TH CENTURY ENGLISH MUSIC Home Page Links Email John Stanley (1712-1786) Early Years
John Stanley was born in London on 17th January, 1712 and was baptised at the church of St. Swithin, London Stone two weeks later on 1st February. He was one of six children born to his father, also John Stanley (an Officer at Swithin's Lane Post Office) and his wife Elizabeth (nee Davy) who had married on 17th June, 1707. When two years old the future composer had a domestic accident which left him almost blind - he could apparently still distinguish colours and possibly some shapes. At the age of seven he began studying music with the organist John Reading but the teacher/student partnership was not fruitful. However, under the guidance of Maurice Greene - composer and organist at St. Paul's Cathedral - he studied "with great diligence, and a success that was astonishing" (Burney). In fact, so outstandingly well did the young Stanley advance that at the age of nine he played the organ (probably as an occasional deputy) at All Hallows, Bread Street. The organist at All Hallows at that time was the composer and harpsichordist William Babell, a former pupil of Handel. Babell died on 23rd September 1723 and exactly one month later the Flying-Post of October 24-6 reported that "by a considerable Majority" of the 66 electors present the eleven year old Stanley was appointed organist to the church at a salary of £20 per annum. The St. James's Evening Post reporting the event stated that Stanley "is become the Surprize of the Town for his ingenious Performance on the Harpsichord and Organ; and, in the opinion of good Judges, bids fair to equal, if not exceed the Merit of his celebrated Predecessor."
