(Obtainable from The Ronald Stevenson Society 3 Chamberlain Road, Edinburgh EH10 4DL or direct from Musaeus Despite the potentially intimidating prospect of fourteen minutes of Japanese haiku (three lines of five, seven and five syllables respectively) and its suggestive use of pentatonic and heptatonic scales completing a twelve-note sound spectrum, this cycle (written in 1971) has nothing to fear for the listener. Moira Harris' soprano is suggestively oriental, despite an occasional struggle with some of the longer-breathed lines in 'Gone away', while avoiding any Madam Butterfly approach. Her singing in the Nocturne and the Epilogue is particularly idiomatic, Black's accompaniment finely judged here but even more so in Spring/The Blossoming Cherry. Gasser, rec. 16.2.2001, live at the Wigmore Hall This quite stupendous piece plays uninterrupted for 80 minutes, the longest unbroken span of piano music ever written. A culmination in the architectonic line of Bach, Busoni, and Sorabji, a close friend of the composer's and whose work he has edited. It should be distributed as quickly as possible, hot on the BBC's broadcast of a later live performance this year. Mark Gasser himself should be contacted. The 7th December 1998 performance marked the composer's 70th birthday, which occurred emblematically nine months earlier, on 6th March. It brought to light Mark Gasser as the work's performing successor to the composer himself and John Ogdon. I've not, alas, heard Ogdon's performance, but Gasser takes over three minutes less than the composer did in 1987 (Altarus gave no recording dates). That's one sign that he's wholly absorbed it - you couldn't rush this work. He took about the same time when he performed the work at the Wigmore Hall, on 16th February 2001. Happily this was later broadcast on Stevenson's birthday, enabling this listener to compare his experience of it in the hall against yet another off-air recording!

Ronald Stevenson
Composer-Pianist
A memoir: 1
London, March 18th 1968. A grey Monday afternoon. The Savage Club. First meeting with Ronald. A whisky to keep the cold at bay. We talk - his ideas, his music, his idols. Redolent of an old-world philosopher-artist, he speaks with a seasoned richness of language, the deliberated rhythm, the rhetoric of his delivery as impreious as the gravelled, woody, claret, urgently underlaid nuance of his Borders/Celtic burr. His gestures are expansive, his passions intense, his sympathies, his likes and dislikes uncompromising. He inscribes a copy of his recently published Passacaglia on DSCH dedicated to Shostakovich, and lends his special-edition Cape Town recording of it (limited to a hundred double LP sets), carefully boxed in whitewood. We go our separate ways. They will cross again. Through books (he writes for me on Beethoven, I for him on Alan Bush), letters, cards, telephone calls, condolences. Other meetings, one with the fadingly radiant Ella Grainger at the first British performance of Percy G's The Warriors The Continents , (August 17th, 1972, sharing a grand tier box afterwards for his favourite symphony, the ). Imbibing wisdoms and liquor by the fireside at his piano or in the pub down the road from his home in West Linton, shadowed by the Pentland Hills southwest of Edinburgh. Downing rough red wine and pasta in a vaulted, candle-lit cellar round the corner from the Wigmore Hall, joined by Joe Banowetz and Alistair Hinton.

Ronald Stevenson
Composer-Pianist
A memoir: 2
Ronald began composing in 1943, during his mid-teens. Since then he's completed around a thousand movements, settings or arrangements, ranging from the gigantic to the aphoristic, passacaglia to album-leaf, orchestra, chamber ensemble and voice to clarsach, highland bagpipes and free-bass accordion. 38% of this output is for piano (original works, cadenzas, transcriptions, folksong settings); 35% is vocal (including chorus); and 15% comprises transcriptions for other media. The emphasis on vocal music is significant: I remember Ronald's wife, Marjorie, once enlightening me by saying that the clue to understanding her husband lay more through his songs than his piano pieces. Combined, the body of transcriptions and folksong arrangements adds up to around 39% of Ronald's activity over the years, indicative of the importance he places in such work. RS defines the piano as 'the Romantic instrument par excellence . It still is. Art is Romantic when it suggests a reality larger than itself. That is why the piano is the Romantic instrument; for it suggests the orchestra. It is the only instrument that can.' To it he has confessed his most intimate, his most public thoughts. Through it he has suggested the symphonic, imagined the orchestral, essayed the abstract, the descriptive, the worldly; he has dreamt dreams miniature and monumental. His piano music is real piano music. It grows out of the instrument, it is not imposed on it. Inventively, he's a man of variation, fantasy and fugue more than sonata - to adapt his description of MacDiarmid (1962), 'an apocalyptic ragman among contemporary composers,' seizing 'any and every fragment of fact and fantasy' before emptying his ragbag 'in a niagaran spate of music.'
