May 11, 1895 - December 3, 1978 William Grant Still is often referred to as “The Dean of African-American Composers.” His interest in orchestral music began with the violin, which he took up at an early age, and continued through his formal music education as he continued to learn as much as possible about all of the instruments of the orchestra. With this knowledge and love for the orchestra, he embarked on a career as a performer and composer of orchestral music. His compositions include symphonies, ballets, operas, soundtrack scores, and chamber music. Still gained much acclaim through his efforts to have his Symphony No. 1 performed by a major American orchestra, no small accomplishment for an African-American in the early 20th century. As he gained national respect for his talent and as his music became part of the musical repertoire of many major orchestras, Still continued pursuing his desire to not only compose for the orchestra, but to conduct his music as well. This led him to his first conducting position with the Los Angeles Philharmonic. His operas were later produced by several major companies and were the first ever operas by an African-American composer to be aired on national television. Still’s success as a composer and conductor paved the way for other “composers of color” to find success in American classical music.

Classically Black: William Grant Still
Listen to this program William Grant Still: A Centennial Tribute features a generous sampling of Still's works, as well as an intimate discussion with Judith Anne Still, daughter of the man often called "the Dean of Negro Composers." Still achieved many "firsts" in his career: he was the first African American in the United States to have a symphony performed by a major symphony orchestra, the first African American to conduct a major symphony orchestra in the Deep South, the first African American to have an opera produced by a major U.S. opera company. The program is the fifth in the Classically Black series, produced by WILL-FM’s Roger Cooper and distributed nationally by Public Radio International. Cooper said the series was created to fill a void in programming. While many programs about black jazz or blues artists were available, there were none featuring black classical artists, he said. Levee Land, William Grant Still and Florence Mills 36 Gundara St Aranda Australia 2614 Levee Land, William Grant Still and Florence Mills Introduction On Sunday evening January 24 1926 an event occurred at the Aeolian Hall, New York which was, in several respects, a significant landmark in the Harlem Renaissance but has since been largely forgotten. On that night the International Composers’ Guild presented a concert which included a performance by the black Broadway star Florence Mills. She sang a group of four jazz-based songs under the title Levee Land . These had been specially composed for the occasion by William Grant Still, a rising young African-American classical composer. The concert included several other notable features: Florence Mills was conducted by Eugene Goossens in what was reported as his first encounter with jazz; Ottorino Respighi made his debut as a conductor, while his wife made her American debut as a concert singer; and a new sonata, by Italian enfant terrible Vittorio Rieti, was presented. Nevertheless, it was certainly the Mills-Still collaboration that inspired the large attendance and the enthusiastic response from the press and audience. To explain why this was so, it is necessary to relate something of the careers and friendship of William Grant Still and Florence Mills.

Quietly tucked inside the music section's regular "Hemidemisemiquavers" column of the Saturday, April 24, 1960, issue of the "New York Times" is the following modest announcement: "William Grant Still's `Aria for Unaccompanied Accordion,' the eighth work commissioned by the American Accordionists' Association, will have its first performance at Town Hall May 15." (1) The previous seven commissions were by no less significant names in American music. The first contract is dated March 10, 1957, and was awarded to Paul Creston, whose ebullient Prelude and Dance, Op. 69, was published by Pietro Deiro, a well established accordion publisher, in 1958, and premiered by concert virtuoso Carmen Carrozza in Carnegie Hall, May 18,1958. (2) Compositions which followed, in order of commissioning, were, in1958, Wallingford Riegger's Cooper Square, Op. 70, and Creston's Concerto for Accordion and Orchestra, Op. 75 (one the instrument's major and most virtuosically challenging works); and, in 1959, Virgil Thomson's Lamentations, Carlos Surinach's Pavana and Rondo, Robert Russell Bennett's Four Nocturnes, and Henry Cowell's Iridescent Rondo. Still's Aria was contracted in 1959 also, on December 1. All of these pieces were published (in the case of Aria, by Sam Fox, in 1960), had successful premieres in New York, Boston, or Chicago, in such places as New York's Town Hall and Carnegie Hall, Boston's Symphony Hall, and the Arts Club of Chicago, and received generally positive reviews, particularly in the New York Times, New York Herald Tribune, and Christian Science Monitor. North wrote of the original release in Fanfare , "...a nostalgic look at the music of black composers... Monica Gaylord... has a beautiful touch for these winning works and when it comes to Coleridge-Taylor's heroic final coda, she peals forth bronze thunder; if this were a live recital, it would bring down the house. The pianist also writes the notes, in which she shows herself to be a knowledgeable historian and a fine writer. A fine recording rounds out the assets of this lovely disc." Monica Gaylord has the subtlety of touch this predominantly gentle recital requires. While she's perfectly capable of ringing out the splashy final numbers of the Colridge Taylor and Dett sets, she's at her most impressive exacting the delicate impressionistic colors from Still's Traceries or coaxing out rhythms of Ellington's Come Sunday. Fine sound and erudite notes by the pianist only add to the attractions. A first-rate reissue. Fanfare : March/April, 1999: Peter J. Rabinowitz

On this date, William Grant Still Born was born in 1895. From Woodville, Mississippi and Reared in Little Rock, Arkansas, he was an African-American composer and musician.
William Grant Still had four children born to he and Grace Bundy, his first wife. Still had taken a break from his musical studies at Oberlin during World War I to join the Navy. At this time the only job available to African-Americans in the Navy was mess attendant. Yet, despite this discriminatory treatment, he and many African-Americans chose to reinforce their claim on democracy and freedom and fight for liberty overseas, although they did not have full freedom at home. During his tour of duty, he was relieved of some of his mess responsibilities to perform for officers' meals after it was discovered that he could play the violin.
The period from 1926 to the early 1940s was Still's most prolific; during this time he wrote Levee Land 1925, a suite for orchestra and soprano that combines traditional western musical elements with jazz;

William Grant Still 1895 - 1978
Composer Still had gone to Wilberforce University (Ohio), a pre-med student as his mother wished, but he became more and more involved in musical matters until he could no longer deny that profession. It was as a family renegade that Still entered the musical world. Worse than that (for his mother), he affiliated himself with composer/produced/publisher W.C. Handy, who is remembered as the "Father of the Blues" and an important influence on popular music in the 20th century. In each of three phases of his career, Still was very much in a time and a place that defined his thinking. First was the training period, a full apprenticeship served in several places. He received instruction wherever he found it and in a wide scope of styles, from Handy to Chadwick and Varese. This background made Still one of few American composers who have achieved recognition without advanced study or a teaching career in an academic setting. The second phase was in New York, where he led two lives: that of an arranger and performer in popular music, and that of a composer of concert music. This phase culminated in his decision to investigate his African heritage and to being African musical ideals into his concert music; he composed the ballet Sahdji in 1930 and the Afro-American Symphony in 1931. As if by providence, his mother remained a strong influence here, for he sought out the spiritual and deeply aesthetic elements of the African heritage;

William Grant Still; Still Living a Dream Karmen Temple Imagine following your passion. Would you have a better chance at living up to your dreams, upon having had a spiritual awakening? Or, would you surely succeed if you had made a promise to live your dream, and the pay off was that you would improve race relations in America? Could you stand up to adversity in a field where you know that you are not welcome? These tremendous feats for one lifetime encompass the achievements of African American composer, William Grant Still. At a time when blacks were barely allowed in the realm of music, he broke new ground, forging ahead in opera and classical music. A lecture, given at SMC, about his legacy was entitled "A Voice High Sounding," an appropriate proclamation as William Grant Still's music is about his voice and his dream being released for all who are willing to hear. Unfortunately, his voice has been stifled by what his daughter, Judith Still relates as "prejudice, bigotry and racism." Judith Still serves as a representative for William Grant Still Music and addressed the College prior to a multicultural music concert by the Santa Monica Orchestra. William Grant Still (1895-1978) was an important trailblazer in American orchestral music; he was one of the first composers of modernist music. Grant was the first African-American composer to achieve significant attention in the national arena. In 1931, his Afro-American Symphony was the first symphony composed by an African-American to be performed by a major orchestra, the Rochester Philharmonic. And, in 1936, he was the first African-American to conduct a major orchestra, the Los Angeles Philharmonic.

Performances, papers, and presentations of all kinds are sought for a meeting on William Grant Still and his world. In addition to papers on Still and performances of his music, presentations that link Still to his varied cultural surroundings are also solicited. These might, to name only a few examples, deal with Still and the Harlem Renaissance, the Hollywood film community, or poets and librettists such as Langston Hughes, Zora Neale Hurston, and Katherine Garrison Chapin. They may address his connections with musicians (both commercial and "classical") and non-musicians. Presenters from fields of study other than music are especially encouraged. WILLIAM GRANT STILL (1895-1978) was an important contributor to the development of commercial music on Broadway and radio in the period 1919-1934, when he worked in New York City. From 1934 he worked in Los Angeles, where he concentrated on operas and symphonic music, but also worked in films and continued as an arranger. Associates in the commercial field included Eubie Blake, Hall Johnson, Will Vodery, Florence Mills, Paul Whiteman, Donald Voorhees, Willard Robison, and Sophie Tucker. As a classical composer he studied with Chadwick and Varese; his music was conducted by Hanson, Stokowski, Sevitsky and others. Contemporary composers include most of the well-known modernists as well as Florence Price, William Dawson, Ulysses Kay, etc.

Oregon Festval of American Music Presents: William Grant Still
Recorded in 2001, this disc contains seldom heard works by African-American composer William Grant Still including the Lyric Quartet, Danzas De Panama, Prince and the Mermaid Suite, Summerland, and Selections from Little Folk Suites (1968) performed by the Oregon String Quartet. Victor Steinhardt and Fritz Gearhart perform three works for violin and piano: Pastorela, Blues and Quit Dat Fool'nish. This disc was listed in the August/September 2002 issue of Strings Magazine in the New and Noteworthy column.
"The Oregon String Quartet, Victor Steinhardt, and Fritz Gearhart all bring to their performances a loving dedication and a spirit of discovery...A worthy and engaging sampling of Still's work." Classics Today December, 2002
"If it is new material you are looking for, there's quite a bit here. The recently discovered Lyric Quartet of 1960 is a three-movement piece lasting 14 minutes and a beautiful one containing a more serious side of Still then we usually get to hear...they [Oregon String Quartet] play all of this with fine style. It is very pleasant program, and half of it can't be found elsewhere..." American Record Guide Sept-Oct, 2002
