March Composer of the Month
John Philip Sousa
His music is synonymous with patriotism. Its exhilarating sounds call the military to duty and stir audiences to their feet. And above all, each composition embodies the spirit of a free country.
In his 138 marches, John Philip Sousa applied modern principles to martial music. The result: He elevated the musicianship and broadened the repertoire of the U.S. Marine Corps Band, helping bring world-class status to the institution. This enabled him to continue the work begun by Patrick S. Gilmore to develop the musical sophistication of the concert band, expanding the instrumentation and quality of music. And, while academics may debate how to classify and judge martial music, audiences in America and around the world consider the author of “The Stars and Stripes Forever” as a master of musical composition and a patriotic genius.
Sousa was born in Washington, D.C., the third of ten children in a family where love of country and musicianship momentously fused to create one of the immortals of American music. Both his parents were émigrés who met in America before the Civil War: John Antonio Sousa was born in Spain to parents who fled revolution in Portugal, Maria Elisabeth Trinkhaus came with her family from Germany. Willing to defend his new homeland with his life during perilous times, John Antonio Sousa played trombone as a member of the United States Marine Corps Band. His son would follow, marching in his footsteps.

William Grant Still
Born in Woodville, Mississippi, and reared in Little Rock, Arkansas, William Grant Still (1895-1978) became the first African American composer to have a symphony performed by an American orchestra. Mr. Still's Afro-American Symphony was premiered by the Eastman Rochester Philharmonic with Howard Hanson in 1931. The symphony was performed by 34 other American and European orchestras during the 1930s. Still would continue to add to his list of firsts, being the first African American to conduct a major symphony orchestra, the first African American to have an opera ( Troubled Island ) performed by a major opera company (1949), and the first to have an opera ( A Bayou Legend ) performed on national television (1981). The period from 1926 to the early 1940s was Still's most prolific; during this time he wrote Levee Land (1925), a suite for orchestra and soprano that combines traditional western musical elements with jazz; From the Black Belt (1926), a work for chamber orchestra based on seven short characteristic sketches; Sahdji (1930), a choral ballet, based on an African story; the

THE "L.A. MUSIC WEEK" ANTHEM I f harmony is what you seek,
Then turn to "L.A. Music Week."
For young and old the goals are there
To find in music joys to share.
The values that we strive to teach
To all those children in our reach
Are found in music, songs, and sounds,
With fun and impact without bounds. Through classes, concerts, and events, With skills and interest as intents, We marshal stars who sing and play, And even stage a "Children's Day." The impact goes beyond the young, With gains that truly are farflung In nurturing the talent pool To aid careers long after school. So join our quest and help those goals; Yes, add your voice within our rolls, And say what kids say as your plan: Say, "I can do it...Yes, I can!"

John B. Cade Library Black History Theme 2003: The Souls of Black Folk: Centennial Reflections Americans have recognized black history annually since 1926, first as "Negro History Week" and later as "Black History Month. " What you might not know is that black history had barely begun to be studied—or even documented—when the tradition originated. Although blacks have been in America at least as far back as colonial times, it was not until the 20th century that they gained a respectable presence in the history books.
Blacks Absent from History Books
We owe the celebration of Black History Month, and more importantly, the study of black history, to Dr. Carter G. Woodson . Born to parents who were former slaves, he spent his childhood working in the Kentucky coal mines and enrolled in high school at age twenty. He graduated within two years and later went on to earn a Ph.D. from Harvard. The scholar was disturbed to find in his studies that history books largely ignored the black American population—and when blacks did figure into the picture, it was generally in ways that reflected the inferior social position they were assigned at the time. Established Journal of Negro History
Woodson, always one to act on his ambitions, decided to take on the challenge of writing black Americans into the nation's history. He established the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History (now called the Association for the Study of Afro-American Life and History) in 1915, and a year later founded the widely respected Journal of Negro History. In 1926, he launched Negro History Week as an initiative to bring national attention to the contributions of black people throughout American history.
