Advice to clever children...
Article from "The Wire", November 1995
Earlier this year, Radio 3 sent a package of tapes to Karlheinz Stockhausen.
The tapes contained music by Aphex Twin, Plasticman, Scanner and Daniel
Pemberton. Then in August, the station's reporter Dick Witts travelled to
Salzburg to meet Stockhausen and ask him for his opinion on the music of
these four "Technocrats". But first, they talked about the German composer's
own youthful experiments in electronic synthesis...
DW: When you started as a composer, how different were the conditions from
today?
KS: I studied music as a pianist, and learning all the traditional Musik. We had about ten disciplines to study: choir, orchestra, conducting, piano was my main instrument, then musicology, harmony and counterpoint. I wrote several works in traditional styles, but also two works, so-called 'free compositions', one for orchestra and alto voice, a work which is still available on CD called the Drei Lieder. I started composing at the age of 20, 1948, the first time I considered my music to be of some general

24. Stockhausen's New Morphology Of Musical Time, Comparison Of Cowell With Stockhau
A comparision of Cowell and stockhausen, from karlheinz stockhausen's New Morphology of Musical Time by Christopher K. Koenigsberg
http://www.music.princeton.edu/~ckk/smmt/cowell.comparison.6.html
A Comparison of Henry Cowell's Rhythmic Concept With Stockhausen's
In his treatise ([Cowell1930]) written in 1919 (but not published until 1930), Henry Cowell discusses the overtone series at length. He applies the overtone series to set up scales of metre, duration, and tempo, which are, in his treatment, the three elements that make up rhythm. "It is difficult to find musical means to which overtones do not apply, or may not be applied, as they may be used to measure all relationships of steady pitch, no matter how subtle are the degrees of pitch chosen; and all rhythmical relationships can be derived from overtones, as will be shown . .." ([p. 20]) Cowell mentions "undertones", descending sequences of partials, what Stockhausen refers to as "subharmonic series of proportions". To Cowell, they arise naturally from properties of acoustics, and they are related to overtones, or ascending sequences of partials, in ways that parallel the relationship of "minor" intervals to "major" intervals. He is on a quest for "new musical resources", as is Stockhausen in his search for ways to parameterize and unify the microstructure and macrostructure of sound, but Cowell does not share Stockhausen's view that "modes", like this series of undertones, are inappropriate in his music. Cowell sets up a scale based on tone-qualities (evidently referring specifically to the aspect of timbre dependent on the presence and relative amplitude of different harmonic overtones in a continuous tone). This characterization looks very much like the serial treatment of such a timbral parameter might look, except for the prominence of harmonic, instead of chromatic, qualities as his structural organizing principle:

Karlheinz Stockhausen – Kunstzerstörer oder Architekt neuer Klangwelten? Transzendente
Avantgarde
Karlheinz Stockhausen, der
Altmeister der Avantgarde,
feiert seinen 70. Geburtstag.

Often using complicated contrapuntal systems, Stockhausen's compositions are characterized by much emphasis on free rhythms, tonal repetition, dissonance, and percussive effects. He is an adherent of aleatory music and allows performers to determine certain aspects of a performance; that is, they can improvise, begin and end at different points, and decide at what speed to sing and play. Stockhausen's unique approach is well-illustrated by his composition Gruppen [groups] (1959); in this piece three separate orchestras, each with its own conductor, play simultaneously; sometimes their music coincides; sometimes they play against one another; sometimes they play antiphonally. Among Stockhausen's other compositions are Kreuzspiel Kontrapunkte No. 1

Karlheinz Stockhausen
