Working with voices, instruments and electronics, his compositions have moved from asserting total control over his performers to allowing greater freedom and improvisation. To some a genius, to others a clown, his deep impact on the evolution of music cannot be denied. He has a strong sense of drama and his cycle of seven huge operas, named after and to be performed on each day of the week, is nearly complete. Stockhausen grew up in Hitler's Germany and, during the war, he worked as a fire warden at a teacher training college in Xanten, then as a stretcher bearer in Bedburg, witnessing for himself the effects of Allied bombing. At the age of 16, Stockhausen was orphaned. His mother had been put into a mental home and was eliminated by the Nazis in 1941, while his father, who was a reluctant party member, went into the army and was probably killed in Hungary in 1945. In the post-war period, Karlheinz was in the sixth form at school but was also obliged to be a salvage-worker and a farmer until he graduated in 1947. He kept up his piano playing all this time. In 1947, Stockhausen was penniless in Cologne - a flattened, ruined city where he took whatever job he could just to keep alive. He gained entrance to the Cologne Musikhochschule and studied philology, philosophy and musiciology at Cologne University. He played in jazz bands and looked upon music as a means of supporting himself while he studied and worked on poems and short stories. He first encountered 'modern' music when works by Paul Hindemith, Igor Stravinsky and Arnold Schoenberg, all banned by the Nazis, began to be heard in Germany. He studied piano with Hermann Schroeder who, after hearing some of Stockhausen's early serial compositions passed him on to the Swiss composer Frank Martin for study. Stockhausen decided to abandon his literary efforts and devote himself to music. He gave evening lectures and his thesis was on Bartok.
