I have a CD of his Chocolate Soldier , English version, on order and a copy of the Bernard Grum biography Prince of Vienna. The web tells me that some of his works have been issued on CD in Germany and, of course, I can get those (with a little help from someone who reads German). I may, though, wantfor scoring a documentarysome recordings from early last century, say up until 1930. As to the personal information, the subject of my documentary, an archaeologist of few scruples, was (I have it from the arachaeologist's daughter) the illegitimate son (b. 1895) of Oscar Straus. The dates are right, I know there was something odd about his parentage, and photos show a strong resemblance. The Grun biography says nothing about this, but it's of an age, and style, where one wouldn't expect it to. The daughter I mentioned, estranged from her father at an early age, has nothing but her mother's word on her father's paternity. I'm trying to verify this connection. Is there an Oscar Straus fan out there who can point me to some Straus authority or the place holding the Straus papers? Michael T.

Straus Memorial Fountain, located in Federal Triangle on 14th Street between Constitution and Pennsylvania Avenues, NW, is today dwarfed by the building in its background, the massive Ronald Reagan Building and International Trade Center The fountain, designed by German-American architect Adolph Alexander Weinman and constructed in 1947, was authorized by Congress in 1927 as a memorial to another German-American, Oscar S. Straus. He was born in 1850 in the town of Otterberg , Rhenish Bavaria, now in the state of Rhineland-Palatinate. Otterberg was founded in 1579 as a place of settlement for the many Protestant families from France and the Spanish Netherlands who had fled their homelands. It also became home to a significant Jewish community. Today, Otterberg is known for the Romanesque art of its Cistercian Abbey Church, built 1168-1254, as well as its many houses dating back to the 16th, 17th, and 18th centuries. In 1854, Oscar S. Straus, then a small child, came with his mother, sister, and brothers to the United States, joining their father, Lazarus, who had emigrated in 1852. He grew up in Talbotton and Columbus, Georgia, and became one of the United States's first career diplomats, serving for many years as Ambassador to Turkey and at the International Court of Arbitration at The Hague. May 2002 Film Music CD Reviews Film Music Editor: Ian Lace Music Webmaster Len Mullenger index page monthly listings May Nicely presented in a four panel digipack, this unusual album presents music and dialogue from four French films from the end of the 1930's and early 1940's, movies which even the most knowledgeable of English-speaking cinephiles are unlikely to be familiar. The disc opens with Simplet , a 1942 comedy directed by and starring the immensely popular Fernadel. The music is by Roger Dumas and after a typically jaunty comedy main title a lengthy dialogue extract leads into the song, "m'appelle Simplet", performed by the movie's star. More dialogue, with as before plenty of birdsong in the background, concludes with another version of the title song and a brief end title. The sound, as through-out the album, is obviously mono and of fairly poor quality with much distortion in evidence. That said, the quality of recording for the selections from La Romance de Paris (1941) is far superior, the first of two featured films directed by Jean Boyer and scored by Georges Van Parys.
