Musikzeitschriften "Strauss-Nachlässe" aus historisch-juristischer Sicht Von Eduard Strauss, erschienen in der Im Zuge des Strauss-Jahres 1999 wurde immer wieder die Frage nach den sogenannten ,Strauss-Nachlässen' aufgeworfen und teilweise heftig diskutiert, ob nicht in diesem Zusammenhang in öffentlichen Sammlungen sogenanntes ,Nazi-Raubgut' zu finden ist, das als Ausdruck richtig verstandener Vergangenheitsbewältigung an die Erben der Verfolgten und Enteigneten zurückzugeben wäre. Dabei wird suggeriert, die Gemeinde Wien könnte an der Arisierung des Strauss-Besitzes mitprofitiert haben. Die ganze Diskussion wird aber leider meist ohne Kenntnis und exakte Bewertung der historischen und juristischen Prämissen und Begriffe geführt und voreilige Schlüsse gezogen. Dem entgegenzuwirken ist Ziel dieser Arbeit. Et lorsque les yeux encore mi-clos, il demandait en tentant de dissiper les brumes du réveil, quelle fête ? L’on répondait : " Saint Innocent ! ". parfois en français, parfois en wallon : " E’nocînt " " Innocent " ! Ce terme prenait une signification savoureuse en wallon : je la rapproche de celle de " ravi " en provençal. This remarkable family of six composers created nearly fifteen hundred compositions, notable chiefly for their glorious melodies, but also for their wonderful mastery of the orchestra. Willi Boskowsky (1909-1991) remains the world's most famous interpreter of this repertoire. Even more than a decade after his death his influence is still profound, his reputation every bit as strong. And this set of five CDs from French EMI tells us why. The feeling for the style is palpable, everything absolutely in its right place, tempi and phrasing immaculately judged. Of course Boskowsky had recorded much of this music before in performances with the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra for Decca. Those recordings received enthusiastic acclaim, while some of these EMI performances with the 'pick-up' recording band, the Johann Strauss Orchestra of Vienna, have had a less universal praise. To some extent that came down to the recordings, but they have come up with great freshness in the new transfers and doubts have been swept away. Warm and rich tone have now become allied with detail as and when required. Such is modern technology and all praise to the EMI engineers. As for the orchestral playing it is committed and idiomatic, and one suspects that the Viennese orchestral musicians on parade here are those same musicians who play for the Philharmonic and the Opera too.

This was a measure of how the great Waltz Kings, Johann Strauss and his sons, captivated the romantic yet formal Vienna society of the nineteenth century with their exhilarating tunes, which came to be played throughout the major capitals of Europe. Queen Victoria and the Prince Consort, and other crowned heads of Europe were dancing the waltz, and the waltzing craze became one of the greatest ever dance phenomena. Rimsky-Korsakov (1844-1908) was one of the greatest masters of Russian music. His source of inspiration was Glinka's operatic style. He made use of both the purely Russian idiom and coloristic oriental melodic patterns. Flight of the Bumble Bee is a showpiece, showing Rimsky-Korsakov's ear for the unusually shaped melody. The fast runs in semitones clearly bring to mind a bee busily bumbling about. The music is a bit more vindictive than it might seem. It comes from Act 3 of the opera The Tale of Tsar Saltan (1903), when the hero Prince Gvidon, transformed by magic into a bee by a Swan-Princess, stings his wicked aunts and the old witch who helped them plot against him and his mother.
