Richard Strauss
Strauss (no relation to the Viennese Waltz family) shone in two major areas: tone poem and opera. Almost single-handedly, he carried the Wagnerian opera tradition and the Romantic Lisztian tone poem into the twentieth century. He is also one of the great composers of Lieder Strauss began to compose at an early age in an idiom which owed much to Robert Schumann . His father, a musical conservative, probably had much to do with this. Young Richard received fairly thorough instruction, but, despite this, was never completely at home in sonata form. His early works, including a string quartet (1879), a symphony (1880), a piano sonata (1880), a cello sonata (1882), and a violin concerto (1882) show serious miscalculations of form. However, we must remember that Strauss is still in his teens, and each new work shows an increasing mastery. His best works of the period are the first concerto for horn (1883) still in the repertoryand an astonishing piano quartet (1884), unaccountably neglected today. In the last work, Strauss forsakes Schumann for a brief encounter with Johannes Brahms and solves his problems with form at a single stroke. Still, Strauss concluded that Brahms, however great in himself, represented a dead end to would-be followers. He continued to search for his own idiom, and his next works are less assured than the piano quartet for example, the Burleske for piano and orchestra (1886) and the symphony

Richard Strauss: Autographs - Portraits - Stage Design
Exhibition commemorating the 50th anniversary of the composer's death, mounted by the Bayerische Staatsbibliothek in cooperation with the Richard-Strauss-Archiv, Garmisch, the Theaterwissenschaftliche Sammlung of Cologne University and the Deutsche Theatermuseum, Munich. Summary
From 11th June until 5th August 1999 the Bayerische Staatsbibliothek is showing the exhibition Richard Strauss: Autographs - Portraits - Stage Design.
For the first time, the music autographs and letters of Richard Strauss owned by the Bayerische Staatsbibliothek are presented to the public in their entirety. Further highlights of the exhibition are the major authentic portraits and many additional pictorial documents from the Richard-Strauss-Archiv, Garmisch. The exhibition also focuses on the stage designs and photographs of the operas coming from the theatre collections in Cologne and Munich. For the first time almost all traceable stage designs for the first performances and the Munich performances during the composer's lifetime are shown and illustrated by the stage photographs. Further details
The Bayerische Staatsbibliothek holds the most extensive collection of music autographs, letters and notes of Richard Strauss owned by the public: that is, 64 music autographs and about 2.000 letters and documents in his own hand. The printed first editions and later publications are also held extensively, as well as the complete literature on Richard Strauss and his work. The exhibition centres on the original music manuscripts and the letters. As complete autographs the library owns for instance Guntram, Till Eulenspiegels lustige Streiche, Krämerspiegel and Metamorphosen. Score drafts (particells), sketch books and single sketches are particularly well documented in the exhibition.

Richard Strauss (1864 - 1949) His artistic education was strictly conservative, his well-mannered, well-heeled appearance that of a stolid investment banker, yet his music shocked the world. Richard Strauss stirred controversy with iconoclastic symphonic works that inspired avid debate throughout contemporary music circles, as well as with erotic operas that literally incited crowds to riot. Richard received a thoroughly proper music education based securely around his father's rock-solid prejudices. Then, true to the program which had been prescribed for him, the youthful Strauss began his career, predictably enough, with the composition and performance of several innocuously conservative symphonic pieces and a few seasons of piano recitals in Berlin. His Suite for Winds in B Flat won the approval of the famous conductor, von Bulow, and, on the spur of the moment, Strauss found himself standing at the podium before the Munich Symphony Orchestra, about to conduct the debut of his own score. The quivering Strauss had never held a baton before and in later years realized he spent the entire performance in an uncomprehending shock. Nonetheless, Strauss soon became von Bulow's assistant and ultimately as noted for his work as a conductor as he was as a composer. In 1885, upon von Bulow's resignation, Strauss took charge of the Munich orchestra. Otherwise, the composer continued, for the moment, on a mundanely marketable creative track. At least, until he met Alexander Ritter, an accomplished violinist and husband to Richard Wagner's niece, Franziska. Ritter and Strauss initiated their friendship around tireless discussions of Wagner's influence on concepts of harmonic structure, orchestration, and the overall artistic vocabulary of the later nineteenth century.

Richard Strauss (1864-1949)
Detailed Information about Introduction (born Munich, 11 June 1864; died Garmisch-Partenkirchen, 8 September 1949). His father, a professional horn player, gave him a musical grounding exclusively in the classics, and he composed copiously from the age of six. He went briefly to university, but had no formal tuition in composition. He had several works given in Munich, including a symphony, when he was 17, and the next year a wind serenade in Dresden and a violin concerto in Vienna. At 20, a second symphony was given in New York and he conducted the Meiningen Orchestra in a suite for wind. In 1885 he became conductor of that orchestra, but soon left and visited Italy. He had been influenced by Liszt ian and Wagner ian thinking; one result was Aus ltalien , which caused controversy on its premiere in 1887. By then Strauss was a junior conductor at the Munich Opera. Other tone poems followed: Macbeth Don Juan and come from the late 1880s. It is
