Richard Strauss (1864 - 1949) In the same way that Bach marked both the pinnacle and the end of the Baroque Era, Richard Strauss was the last of the great Romantics. Like his contemporary Gustav Mahler he both followed and greatly extended the type of musical expression founded by composers such as Richard Wagner where highly charged music was performed by enormous orchestras. He was very much a celebrity at the peak of his career as both composer and conductor and, though he faded from the limelight as younger composers explored new territories, he remained an inspiration to a new generation of musicians. He was born in Munich in 1864, and like many great composers was clearly gifted from a very early age. His father Franz Strauss was one of the foremost Horn players of the day, and Richard's talents were also recognised and encouraged by none other than Hans von Bulow (the first husband of Lizst's daughter Cosima, later to marry Wagner). Inspired initially by Berlioz and Brahms his first compositions were more classical in nature, before he moved in the direction of the more uninhibited romanticism of Lizst and Wagner. By his early twenties Richard had composed a considerable amount of music, but it was with his first "Tone Poem" Don Juan in 1889 that his career was to take an upward turn. Having written several tone poems to major acclaim, Strauss turned first to writing Operas, and then to conducting, his longest lasting post being with the Berlin Philharmonic for 12 years. During this time his compositional output declined to near zero, but then in later life a last spurt of creativity resulted in a number of mature works seeming in part to return to a more classical form.

2001: A Space Odyssey - Original Soundtrack Stanley Kubrick always had a reputation for individuality in his film-making. He invariably created films which stretched the boundaries of established practice in terms of concept, story, camera work and direction. With 2001: A Space Odyssey he also confounded expectations in the soundtrack department. Although he had commissioned a soundtrack from no less a composer than the venerable Alex North , he chose instead to ignore North's specially composed music and stick to his original "temp track" consisting of classical works of his own choosing. The rest as they say is history. His choices of music ranged from the conventional to the positively weird, taking some courageous risks with his creation, but those choices complemented the storyline perfectly and created a soundtrack legend along the way. The title track is the opening music from "Also Sprach Zarathustra" by Richard Strauss . Always associated during the film with the black monoliths and eclipses (fittingly since the original symbolises sunrise), this music comes to represent monumental events in the history of mankind as orchestrated by these mysterious forces. By association, this music came to signify humanity's efforts in boldly going where no-one had gone before, and was used in similar situations such as the TV coverage of the Apollo Moon missions and landings in the late 1960s and 1970s. The particular recording used was the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Herbert von Karajan. If you're interested in hearing more of this great work, then Karajan has a number of definitive recordings of

I have been sequencing Classical MIDI since 1994.
My first wavetable sound card was an Ensoniq Soundscape. Unfortunately, they were taken over by Sound Blaster and now a great sound card is gone.
But I still use mine, combined with my prized possessions,
a RolandED SC-8850 and UA-100 Processor
For MIDI sequencing, I use PowerTracks Pro
Since I have limited piano keyboard experience, I enter everything manually with the mouse and keyboard.
As you may have noticed, my favorite composer is Richard Strauss.
Don Juan was the first classical music I remember hearing at age 8 and I was enthralled - but other works here are special to me as well.
The Firebird, the Kalinnikov and Victory At Sea are favorites from high school
and my 24 years in the Navy Band.
I hope you enjoy listening to my MIDI as much as I enjoyed creating them.
