Richard Strauss and Salome
William R. Terpening '98
n addition to such unconventional and popular works as Elektra (1909), Richard Strauss (German, 1864-1849) composed the opera for the German translation of Oscar Wilde's adaptation of Salome , first performed by the Dresden Opera in 1905. It is fitting that Strauss was the man who transformed Wilde's Salome the text of which features the attempted seduction of John the Baptist (Iokanaan) followed by Salome's unprecedented passionate post-mortem kiss for the prophet into opera; both Wilde and Strauss were criticized widely for unconventionality in their works. Strauss's opera was broadly rejected at first because of the "immorality" of its contenta sequence of events which raises uncomfortable questions about the deep sensuality of the Christian traditionand for the heroine's disregard for the Christian morality. If many, including Lord Alfred Douglas (Wilde's lover and the translator of the English edition, the original having been authored in French), were surprised to see Wilde's version of Salome performed on stage, Strauss's opera must have seemed appropriate given the lyricism of the text. Sylvan Barnet, in the introduction to Signet's collection of Wilde's plays, writes:

Strauss, Richard Aus Italien (1886), and the symphonic poems Don Juan (1888) and Death and Transfiguration Till Eulenspiegels lustige Streiche Thus Spake Zarathustra (1895), after Nietszche; Don Quixote (1898), a tone poem in the form of variations with a cello solo; and A Hero's Life (1905), after Oscar Wilde's play; the brilliantly dramatic Electra (1909); the delightful comedy Der Rosenkavalier Ariadne auf Naxos (1912); and Die Frau ohne Schatten (1919). He wrote all but the first of these, as well as Die aegyptische Helena (1928) and Arabella (1933), in collaboration with the poet Hugo von Hofmannsthal. After Hofmannsthal died (1929) Strauss's librettists were Stefan Zweig for Die schweigsame Frau (1935) and Josef Gregor for Friedenstag Daphne (1938), and Metamorphosen (1946), for string instruments, and two pieces for voice and orchestra, and Im Abendrot (both 1948), considered the final musical expression of dying German romanticism. Notes on the Music Richard Strauss (1864-1949)
Sonata in F major, Op. 6 (1883)
The two main works on this recording were composed within three years of each other Richard Strauss' F Major Sonata was completed in 1883 and César Franck's A Major Sonata in 1886. Strauss was born in Munich on the 11th of June, 1864, the son of Franz Joseph Strauss, principal hornist in the Court Orchestra (Hoforchester) and Josephine Pschorr, whose family were prominent brewers in the Bavarian capital (a city still famous the world over for its beer). This lineage provided the young Richard with a background both musically and financially secure and, indeed, he showed great promise from an early age: he started piano at four (he could read musical notes before letters and words) and began composing at the age of six (lieder, piano pieces and orchestral overtures). At the age of eight, Richard Strauss began violin studies and at eleven, theory, harmony and instrumentation (of which he was to become an acknowledged master). His father encouraged him to listen to the music of the older masters, including Beethoven, Mendelssohn and Schumann, all of whose influences can be clearly heard in Strauss's cello sonata, which he began to compose in 1881 at the age of seventeen. He revised the work extensively during the winter of 1882-1883, preserving only the introductory Allegro con brio, in which the cello is treated in a heroic style anticipating his tone poem, "Don Juan", of 1888. When the sonata was first performed in Berlin in 1884, he was congratulated on the opening lyrical theme by the legendary violinist and composer, Joseph Joachim.
