Stravinsky, Igor (1882 - 1971)
The son of a distinguished Russian singer, Stravinsky spent his earlier years in Russia, either in St. Petersburg or, in the summer, at the country estates of his relatives. He studied music briefly with Rimsky-Korsakov but made a name for himself first in Paris with commissions from the impresario Dyagilev, for whom he wrote a series of ballet scores. He spent the years after the Russian Revolution of 1917 in Western Europe and in 1939 moved to the United States of America. There in the post- war years he turned from a style of eclectic neo-classicism to composing in the twelve-note technique propounded by Schoenberg. A versatile composer, inventive in changing styles, he may be seen as the musical counterpart of the painter Picasso. Stage Works Recommended Recordings Firebird Suite / Petrushka Suite

Other Information: Igor Fydorovich Stravinsky was born on 17 June 1882 at Oranienbaum on the Gulf of Finland opposite Kronstadt and near St Petersburg, Russia. He was a son of Fyodor Ignatyevich Stravinsky (1843 - 1902) a principal bass at the Imerial Opera in St. Petersburg who made over 1200 appearances in 64 roles during his career. Igor Stravinsky took his first piano lessons when he was 9 years old. Very soon he spent his time at piano improvising and not practicing his piano exercises. He also spent a lot of time reading and memorizing opera scores that he was able to find in his father's huge library. Perhaps his first contact with live music was when his father took him to the opera. Later in life, Stravinsky mentioned this first contact, but credited his sudden interest in music to a performance of Tchaikovsky's 6th Symphony ("Symphonie Patéthique") which was performed in memory of Tchaikovsky who had died recently in 1893. Since his parents did not want Igor to study music and wanted him to enter a profession, Stravinsky studied law at the University of St Petersburg. To satisfy his need for music, he still had piano lessons and went to concerts. Meeting Rimsky-Korsakov's son gave him an opportunity to be a frequent guest at the world-famous composer's house. Rimsky-Korsakov saw a great talent of his guest, and in 1903 he offered to give Stravinsky private lessons - an offer Stravinsky did not decline.

The Classical Musician
Igor Stravinsky His Rite of Spring heralded the century. After that, he never stopped reinventing himselfor modern music BY PHILIP GLASS The Rite of Spring . Trouble began with the playing of the first notes, in the ultrahigh register of the bassoon, as the renowned composer Camille Saint-Saens conspicuously walked out, complaining loudly of the misuse of the instrument. Soon other protests became so loud that the dancers could barely hear their cues. Fights broke out in the audience. Thus Modernism arrived in music, its calling card delivered by the 30-year-old Russian composer Igor Stravinsky. Born in 1882 in Oranienbaum, Russia, a city southwest of St. Petersburg, Stravinsky was rooted in the nationalistic school that drew inspiration from Russia's beautifully expressive folk music. His father was an opera singer who performed in Kiev and St. Petersburg, but his greatest musical influence was his teacher, Nikolay Rimsky-Korsakov. The colorful, fantastic orchestration that Stravinsky brought to his folk song-inspired melodies was clearly derived from Rimsky-Korsakov. But the primitive, offbeat rhythmic drive he added was entirely his own. The result was a music never before heard in a theater or concert hall. In 1910 Serge Diaghilev, then director of the world-famous Ballets Russes, invited Stravinsky to compose works for his company's upcoming season at the Paris Opera.

Biography
Igor Stravinsky
Composer Russia/ USA Born 17 Jun 1882
Died 6 Apr 1971
Igor Stravinsky shot to prominence when Sergei Diaghilev commissioned him to compose the ballets 'Firebird' and 'Petrushka'. Leaving Russia for France in 1918, he abandoned Romanticism for neo-classicism and took American citizenship in 1945. Stravinsky had intense perception and a scathing humour, qualities which often came through in his music and surprised and alarmed the musical world throughout his career.
Igor Stravinsky's father was the leading bass at the St Petersburg Opera and, aware of the precarious nature of an artistic career, he decided on the law for his son. Although Igor, born in Lomonosov, did not qualify as a lawyer, he gained two advantages: the acquisition of a scrupulous facility for detail and order, and a meeting with the father of a fellow student, Rimsky-Korsakov. The brilliant Russian musical pedagogue took Stravinsky as a private pupil in 1905 and arranged for several of Stravinsky's early compositions to be played in St Petersburg in 1908-9. It was at one of these performances that Sergei Diaghilev, the impresario and cousin of the composer Tchaikovsky, heard Stravinsky's 'Fireworks' and immediately commissioned him to write a score for the Ballets Russes' first Paris season in 1910. 'Firebird' was so successful in its scintillating orchestral colours that a new score for another Russian fairy-tale ballet was soon commissioned: this was 'Petrushka'. As one of the celebrated Diaghilev set, Stravinsky now enjoyed international fame and popularity. However, of all Stravinsky's ballets, 'Le Sacre du printemps' ('The Rite of Spring') of 1913 stands out. It is a remarkable example of his elemental and brutally unmelodic style. It caused the dancers and orchestral players intense discomfort before they had mastered its requirements, and was met by an unprecedented demonstration of derision from the Paris audience at its premiere.

Igor Stravinsky By Paul Musser paul@musica.co.uk Born 17 June, 1882, Lomonsov, Russia Died 6 April, 1971, New York, USA A musical figure of titanic proportions, Igor Stravinsky's music altered the sonic landscape of the 20th century. Whether it was groundbreaking works with the Ballet Russe, his Neo-classical compositions or late serial pieces, Stravinsky was a true master of his craft and a musical pioneer. A Late Start Unlike many other composers, Igor Stravinsky's musical calling took shape comparatively late in life. A 20-year-old law student, Stravinsky began taking private composition lessons with the legendary Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov. After an extensive tutelage, Stravinsky caught a fortuitous break when he was commissioned by Serge Diaghilev to write for his Paris based Ballet Russe.

Stravinsky, Igor Fedorovich , Russian-American composer. Considered by many the greatest and most versatile composer of the 20th cent., Stravinsky helped to revolutionize modern music. Stravinsky's father, an actor and singer in St. Petersburg, had him educated for the law. Music was only an avocation for Stravinsky until his meeting in 1902 with Rimsky-Korsakov, with whom he studied formally from 1907 to 1908. Stravinsky's First Symphony in E Flat Major (1907) is pervaded by the influence of Rimsky-Korsakov 's nationalistic style. The work of Stravinsky interested the ballet impressario Sergei Diaghilev L'Oiseau de Feu The Firebird, 1910) and Petrouchka In the ballet Le Sacre du printemps The Rite of Spring, 1913) he departed radically from musical tradition by using irregular, primitive rhythms and harsh dissonances. The audience at the premiere of the ballet reacted with riotous disfavor. However, in the following year the work was performed by a symphony orchestra, and ever since it has been recognized as a landmark and masterpiece of modern music. At the beginning of World War I, Stravinsky moved to Switzerland, where he composed several works based on Russian themes, including the ballet
