(Verve 314-529-908)
Born in Dayton, OH, on 29 November 1915, the young composer and pianist Billy Strayhorn offered his composition Lush Life to Duke Ellington in 1938; less than a year later Strayhorn had become an arranger and pianist with the Ellington band, a collaboration that was to last until Strayhorn's death in 1967. His classical and jazz training, combined with sophisticated taste, was appreciated by Ellington, who described him as "my listener, my most dependable appraiser [and] critic." Among the works that Strayhorn composed alone or with Ellington are the classics Take the A Train Chelsea Bridge Passion Flower , and Johnny Come Lately Several of these works are available in orchestral settings from the G. Scholars Index Lush Life : A Biography of Billy Strayhorn by David Hajdu A 1996 nominee for the National Book Critics Circle Award, this perceptive, meticulously researched biography rescues from obscurity the gifted Billy Strayhorn (1915-67), Duke Ellington's arranger and composer of many popular Ellington Orchestra tunes, including "Take the `A' Train." Worshipped by jazz aficionados as the creative power behind the Ellington throne, Strayhorn preferred to live quietly while his friend/boss took the bows. In clear prose and with careful attention to nuance, David Hajdu documents Strayhorn's contributions to the Ellington magic and delineates an attractive personality who found good in almost everyone he met. Although he composed some of the most brilliant American music of this century, Billy Strayhorn spent his entire career as Duke Ellington's right-hand man and seldom escaped Ellington's conspicuous shadow. To a great extent, this was a willed obscurity: as an uncloseted gay man, Strayhorn preferred to avoid the spotlight. Toward the end of his life, however, this trade-off began to weigh more heavily on him. David Hajdu's account is a model of the witty, elegant, and deeply sympathetic biography.

Billy Strayhorn wrote "Lush Life" when he was not more than 22 and had yet to be exposed to cultures more high-falutin' than those he encountered in North Carolina and Pittsburgh. Yet he could only have created the lyric because of, rather than in spite of, his youth and preciousness. Only a naif would lay his feelings so totally on the line, to walk around with his soul so completely exposed that any passerby could take a shot at it. When Chris Connor sings "Lush Life," you're almost embarrassed to look - you feel like she's revealing something so personal she has no business doing it up on a stage. If you were to take all the major ballads of any of the great songwriters and boil them into a single composition, you might get a song as good as "Lush Life." Which, as it happens, pretty much sums up Billy Strayhorn's career as a writer of love songs. Apart from "Something to Live For," also presented to Ellington in '38, "Lush Life" remains the sole Strayhorn ballad to have entered the standard singer's repertory. And even "Lush Life" sneaked in through the back door, after being left by its father in the trunk for ten years. Ten years ago, "Lush Life" was so overdone in every loft in Manhattan it became the last thing anybody wanted to hear. Your average jazz singer would stick the mike in her face and scat for a half-hour, following which, she would then maul "Lush Life" in an attempt to prove she could remember a lyric. And if they didn't smother both the life and the lushness out of the song, Linda Ronstadt did.

Billy Strayhorn started writing for Duke Ellington in 1939 at the age of twenty-four. From then until his death, he was Ellington's most consistent collaborator. Though Ellington used to say that he and Strayhorn had almost identical musical thoughts, that's not quite true. Strayhorn's musical ideas were more formal and impressionistic. Ellington's were more palpable and blues oriented. Over they years, they influenced one another.
Strayhorn wrote many songs by himself, the most well known are "Take the 'A' Train," "Lush Life" and "Chelsea Bridge."
