During his twenty-five year tenure with the Duke Ellington Orchestra as composer, lyricist, arranger, and Duke's closest musical confidante, Billy Strayhorn rarely performed in front of a live audience and even less frequently entered a recording studio. Although his piano playing can be heard on a handful of records with the Ellington Orchestra as well as on some of its members' side projects, most notably several dates with Johnny Hodges, Strayhorn made just one album as a featured solo artist. That album, the Peaceful Side of Billy Strayhorn recorded during two overnight sessions in Paris in January 1961, has recently been reissued in the original mono version on Capitol Jazz. It offers a unique opportunity to hear this brilliant composer's own takes on some of his best-known songs, including "Lush Life," "Take the A Train," and "Chelsea Bridge." It was certainly not a lack of technique that kept Strayhorn from recording more often. A classically trained pianist, his playing here is exquisite, evoking the impressionism of Debussy almost as much as the driving jazz of Ellington. This is a quiet, spare recording featuring just Strayhorn's piano with occasional accompaniment by bass, string quartet, or vocal chorus. Strayhorn brings out all the passion and melancholy of his own compostions, which are performed in much more relaxed tempos than we are used to hearing. Even "'A' Train" is treated as a moody ballad. Other highlights include a gently swinging "Just A Sittin' and A Rockin'," and an exquisite version of the haunting "A Flower is a Lovesome Thing." It is a shame that Strayhorn did not record more, since he brought the same extraordinary musical intelligence and sophistication to his piano playing that he did to his composing.

Billy Strayhorn (1915-1967)
Billy Strayhorn was truly an example of the boy genius who saw his dreams fulfilled. While still a teenager, he wrote the entire score for a high school musical revue which created such a sensation that it was soon mounted as a professional theatrical production. A song from that original Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania high school show, written for the graduating class of 1935, "My Little Brown Book" remains a favorite standard to this day. In 1938, young Billy auditioned a few of his pieces for Duke Ellington, whose band had become enormously popular. Ellington immediately perceived the genius of the youngster, and a long and historic association of the two musical geniuses began. From then on, Strayhorn became inseparable from Duke and his fabulous musical organization. They worked closely together, each complementing the other and turned out some of the great classic jazz pieces in American musical history. To this day, musical scholars sometimes have difficulty in determining who wrote which part of what number, was it Ellington or was it Strayhorn. Included in this edition of Words and Music are the following Strayhorn compositions: Satin Doll Something to Live For My Little Brown Book Smada Lush Life Raincheck A Flower Is a Lovesome Thing Just a Sittin and a Rockin Chelsea Bridge Imagine My Frustration Lotus Blossom Take the "A" Train

Strayhorn, Billy,
byname of WILLIAM THOMAS STRAYHORN (b. Nov. 29, 1915, Dayton, Ohio, U.S.d. May 31, 1967, New York, N.Y.), American pianist and composer who spent his entire career in collaboration with and as amanuensis to the composer and bandleader Duke Ellington Educated privately, Strayhorn applied to Ellington in 1938 for work as a lyricist, using his own composition "Lush Life" as a credential. In 1939 Ellington made his first recording of a Strayhorn composition; it was the first of many, including the highly popular "Take the 'A' Train" and "Chelsea Bridge," an excellent example of the composer's refined, impressionistic style. Strayhorn was also an accomplished pianist who rarely did justice to his own talent. His work as a composer became so intertwined with Ellington's that it was said that eventually neither man was able to distinguish his own contributions to their joint work. Strayhorn worked on most of Ellington's major concert works and unquestionably exerted a great influence upon him.

Billy Strayhorn
Billy Strayhorn was arranger and occasional second pianist and lyricist with Duke Ellington beginning in 1939the collaboration continued until the 1960s. Among his hundreds of compositions best known are "Lush Life" and "Take the A Train". During the pre-bop period of the mid 1940's Strayhorn experimented with false modulations and expanded the swing vocabulary of chord voicings. In 1993, Billy Taylor recorded and produced "Dr. T" featuring Gerry Mulligan on GRP records (GRD-9692). Here's an exerpt from Lush Life, a Billy Strayhorn composition.

As a youth in Hillsborough, North Carolina, and Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Billy Strayhorn received an extensive training in music. In December 1938, he submitted a composition to Duke Ellington , who was so impressed by the young man's talent that three months later he recorded Strayhorn's Something to Live For with the composer as pianist. Four more of Strayhorn's pieces were recorded during 1939 including I'm Checkin' Out Goo'm Bye and Grievin' by Ellington, and Barney Goin' Easy and Lost in Two Flats by Barney Bigard, as well as a work by Ellington written as a tribute, Weely (a Portrait of Billy Strayhorn) . After serving briefly as a pianist in Mercer Ellington's orchestra, Strayhorn joined Duke Ellington's band as associate arranger and second pianist, and for nearly three decades worked in close collaboration with the leader. The two men were so attuned to one another musically, and Strayhorn's work was such a perfect complement to Ellington's, that it is now impossible to establish the exact extent of the former's contribution to Ellington's oeuvre. Their relationship was described in flattering terms by Ellington in his autobiography (1973). Strayhorn collaborated on more than 200 items in Ellington's repertory, including such standards as

Once upon a time there were a number of pages here about Duke Ellington. But they've grown old and other sites have taken up the task. While the old pages are still available, they have some broken links and are no longer maintained. The Duke Ellington Society (TDES) is the premier organization dedicated to the memory, life, and works of Edward Kennedy Ellington. Their web pages are a great place to start looking for Ellington information.
